CA SB206 Signed
Newsom signed SB 206 CA college athletes can now have agents, get paid for their likeness, and have shoe contracts while in school starting in 2023. This should get really interesting.

Re: CA SB206 Signed
Every 5* will get a car deal. People think shoes, but I guarantee a lot of business owners care a lot more about the local Universities than they do some pro team. When a guy like Herbert can now get paid to do a commercial for the local plummer, and get a new truck every 6 months for doing a signing at the local Fors dealership ect. That's what will be happening. And how does the NCAA govern if a school is funneling money to some local store, who then gives it to players?

Phoenix, AZ has roughly 10 times the population of Eugene. Presumably an athlete has a much greater chance of securing a sponsorship in the larger market.

Re: CA SB206 Signed
Pros
+ Student-athletes, like every other person on earth, will have the ability to benefit from their own name and likeness
+ This doesn't come directly from the school or athletic department's budget
+ The rules are capitalistic - same rules apply to everyone
Cons
- Assuming this is adopted across the country, this will give 'big' schools an even greater advantage ("Come to Alabama. People know our right tackle's name, so your endorsement opportunities are 100x what they are at Oregon/Stanford").
- May 'open up the floodgates' of paying players using university coffers or shady money. Scenario 1: School pays Marcus Mariota $100k to use his image on a poster, when the value is perhaps more like $25k. Scenario 2: Bag man pays Tua Tagovailoa* $100k to give a speech at his corporate office, when the value of such is perhaps closer to $1k. Both scenarios skew advantage deeply toward schools with large budgets and large donors.
- Combined with transfer portal, underrated high school players who outperform their rankings at, say, Illinois, will transfer to a larger school with a better TV deal in order to increase the value of their name and likeness, thus increasing the competitive gap even more.
This makes the competition for getting eyeballs even more important. The Pac-12 needs to figure their s*** out yesterday with regards to having an optimum TV deal.

That's great, but this isn't isolated to the school's town. I'm sure there are far more alum and fans of UO in Portland, then there is in Eugene. In the bay area we also have a huge alum base and fan base. A school like Oregon draws fans from all over, I'd bet we have twice the fan base then what ASU has.

It's not perfect and it absolutely benefits the blue bloods, but I think it's the most fair and realistic way of paying college players.
The only other solution that I think makes sense, is to put forth a percentage of profits into a fund in a locked in CD account with 5% interest or something along those lines, and then when players graduate they receive their percentage take of the 'profit' earned on their name.

you gotta think Uncle Phil is licking his lips at the thought of more or less being able to buy a championship in his lifetime

I actually doubt we see large corporate sponsors for at least the time being if not for quite a while. I think this will definitely be local car dealerships and the like overpaying their star QBs.duck541 wrote:you gotta think Uncle Phil is licking his lips at the thought of more or less being able to buy a championship in his lifetime

Re: CA SB206 Signed
Sounds like FL and NY are moving ahead with similar bills with likely the same result as CA. This fight was over before it started. The NCAA is going to be forced to rollover. Even if this bill isn’t the “best” answer, the NCAA deserves a kick in the teeth, so I am on board.
I think of all those quotes my parents use to say when I was little:
“Karma is a $&@&”
“It could not have happened to a nicer person”
“If you play with the bull, you get the horns”

Re: CA SB206 Signed
One more thing here. The Pac-12 knew this was happening for MONTHS. That statement today released by Larry Scott was embarrassing. Whether or not he agrees with the bill is not the point. He is directly in the center of something he cannot stop or change. The PAC-12 has been losing market share and money to the other 4 major conference for the past 10 years.
He should have stood up and pretended like he was all for this. He could have changed the landscape of the PAC-12 by saying that this was a long time coming and we expect our other schools to follow. We want to keep our kids on the west coast at the best schools and give them the best opportunity in life and In athletics. Could have secured a new TV deal and been the conference that “pushed for change”.
Brutal. Of all the idiotic things he has done, today takes the cake.

Haven't had enough time to digest the long-term ramifications on recruiting and whatnot, but I really hope this paves the way for the return of EA Sports NCAA Football.

Re: CA SB206 Signed
PDX is a good point - however, I doubt local bay area companies are going to pay for Oregon athletes to endorse their products. I think it would piss off too many locals. Assuming the bulk of the $$$ is coming from local endorsements, larger markets definitely have a leg up. WSU is screwed.buckmarkduck wrote:maxduck wrote:Phoenix, AZ has roughly 10 times the population of Eugene. Re: CA SB206 Signed
I see this as being the downfall of the ncaa. California schools will hold a huge advantage, but other states will be encouraged to follow. The ncaa has been notoriously stubborn with this topic and unless they change their ways, which I don't think they will, we're going to be seeing the power 5 conferences voting to leave the ncaa.
Honestly I'm not an advocate of paying players. They are offered free scholarships in exchange while others are put into massive debt to pay for their education. If the players choose to waste that opportunity it's on them, but now that it's a real thing, I'm curious to see what nike money can really do for Oregon
