For better or worse, Williams was a star chaser. We benefited from it but also clearly this one is and has been disastrous. We as hardcore fans know the Ducks passed on him a few months ago, but all the headlines still say “Oregon commit”

I remember reading somewhere Hill took down Oregon commit and alot of oregon stuff for his page awhile ago. At the time I was worried we loss a high rated db recruit but, now, I guess we really dodged a bullet.

After Williams left, Oregon coaches did more digging on Hill and decided to pass on him and not provide him enrollment paperwork.

This is 100% consistent with what I heard.

The vetting process for anything whether it be a student athlete or hiring for a position in a company can be very flawed. I am sure we all have stories about the absolute best candidate that you just could not pass up and had to hire. Once you got that person on board and saw them in action things were dramatically different. It's a tough thing.

I know that MC does have a pretty thorough vetting process. I was at an event with a small group of people at which he was asked about how he evaluates a prospect. He gave a very thorough overview of his process. There were a couple of very high level people in the room who made it clear that they did not want the university or the AD embarrassed or shamed by the behavior of ANY student athlete. Is it flawless? Not at all. There's also the aspect of wanting to really help a kid get out of a tough situation and put him into a positive, supportive environment and hope that it gets him/her on track. There have been many cases of that at Oregon. In some instances it did help the athlete turn things around, in some instances it did not. Colt Lyerla is a really good example of that. Oregon knew exactly what they were getting and hoped they could help him get on track. They invested a ton in that guy.

My point is that it's real tough and I know that we all hope that things stay on course but again, you just never know.

Imduck,

I'm not saying that anything you just said is wrong, but in a case like Jalen Hall, numerous schools were pulling out of his recruitment because of all the red flags. That means, relatively speaking, Cristobal's bar is lower than those other schools. Is his vetting system superior to theirs? The only evidence so far is to the contrary to this point.

I'm not saying Cristobal is a bad guy or anything of the sort. I do have a bone to pick with all the posters who have repeatedly said "If Cristobal says the kid is good, that's good enough for me!" because I don't see the kind of evidence that suggests he vets recruits any harder than any other coach nationwide. Frankly, is it even Cristobal's job to vet kids?

Aren't people usually saying that as a comment about the kid's talent? My attitude is deference to coaches on talent, because they've proved they can scout well enough to field a pretty talented team. It's not about deferring about a recruit's moral character – we usually don't have much information to have an opinion about that, since you can't make a highlight reel about it or go watch gametape of a kid being polite or whatever.

Honestly, in a room full of alpha males, there will be a certain amount of , shall we say, aberrant behavior.

There will always be a limit to how much control the coaches have of the information they use to 'vet', or whatever you wish to call it, these student athletes.

To a certain extent, it is simpler when they choose to pursue a local athlete, but even that is limited to the quality of contacts the coaches have in the community.

Case in point, a local running back prospect was being looked very seriously at by Oregon, Oregon State, and several other schools. (The kid used to be on the soccer team I coached for several years... He was also an incredible mid-fielder)

During his senior season, the phone rang at a local boosters home, and an Oregon coach asked about the kid (The man in question was a former all-American infielder).

they talked about his abilities, as well as character. When that subject was broached, the booster said, "He's a bully and a thug!" (Never proven in a court of law to that point, but we knew for a fact he was being covered for by multiple teachers, coaches, and other individuals who had what they considered a vested interest in his athletic success. One of the math instructors was actually caught submitting falsified records to keep him eligible), along with an explanation of why some of this were aware of this behavior.

Strangely enough, the scholarship offer disappeared.

Does that happen in every case?

Of course not!

At least we get lucky, sometimes.

It's been said with regards to character as well as talent.

I would imagine that if there are some guys who have such egregious offenses before they get on campus, there are probably others who are in the Franklin/Wallace/Heard situation and we'll find out about them sometime after they've arrived on campus. Since only one of his classes has actually shown up in Eugene so far, we don't know, and my previous comment is purely a guess at this point. At first glance, though, it seems like the vetting didn't hurt.
I'm not anti-vetting, but I would argue that it hurt recruiting in some respect. Since, they were so deliberate in their approach, kids would move on long before their offer would arrive, which left Oregon on the outside looking in for recruits that they may have had a chance on otherwise. That includes kids without character issues.

If we see a huge spike in problems for the program, then I'll admit to being wrong, but at this point, I don't think it matters whether the kid had problems before or after they arrived on campus. They were clearly not model citizens regardless, so those that had it occur on campus just weren't caught doing similarly shady stuff beforehand. The way I see it, Cristobal removed Hall (though it seemed like he kind of removed himself) and Hill from the program before they could cause issues, while Franklin/Wallace/Heard were a part of the program when it happened, so that scenario is worse for the program.

Either way, the ideal scenario is to weed these kids out ahead of time, but as someone mentioned before, much like a job interview it can be very difficult to do. Kids will generally put their best foot forward when in the presence of coaches, and I think it's rare that high school coaches would say something to jeopardize their players' futures.

There were issues with people that both Chip and MH recruited and highly vetted. They were just not made public. Some of those were with very well known players who continued in the program.

The issues with Hill really came further into focus when he was at the Polynesian bowl game in January. Even prior to that UO had been made aware of some issues and began to back off. After the Poly bowl Hill was told he would not be getting the paperwork for admission nor a scholarship offer. There was then an effort made by the Oregon coaches to help him out with other options . It is not known what those were. After consulting with university legal, administration both on campus and the AD, and the NCAA a decision was made not to move forward.

As I understand there are a multitude of circumstances in play here and as mentioned have been kept confidential.

We will likely never know all the details and as indicated before the vetting process is never 100% infallible.

It was included in most news reports that Oregon had dropped him after signing day. They didn't elaborate.

He was dropped long before signing day. That may be when they first publicly acknowledged it but it was well before that.

With the high speed and roll out the red carpet+bow down to recruits approach of recruiting nowadays its pretty difficult to place high rated prospects under a microscope for a long and thorough vetting process unless you're the kids childhood, hometown dream school or your playing for a natty every year. (two luxuries we had at the beginning of the last decade) Stanford is the only exception.

MH's vetting process was very good in getting excellent recruits in the last decade. But college football recruiting and Oregon football has changed.
