I'll reserve judgement until we actually start playing games and hopefully get ahead far enough so that all the quarterbacks get to play and actually develop. NONE of us knows what is going to happen with the coaching staff or the players Next year for that matter. I personally think Bo will give us a chance to play the backups on a much more consistent basis and the coaches will decide to develop the talent they have more than old ground and pound did. What an absolute travesty that he NEVER let the backups get any experience for 3 years Not smart IMHO.QuackininBama wrote:Nix isn't even the issue. Sure, he may come out and throw for 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns this year and it will be great!
The issue is the future of the Ducks as far as player development and recruiting. I guarantee you if Nix is named starter one, or all of the quarterbacks currently on our roster will hit the transfer portal. The days of kids sitting and waiting patiently on the bench are over. You either develop them and give them some playing time, or they will go somewhere where they can play. They signed on with Oregon because they thought they had a chance at playing, but if every single year Oregon hits the transfer portal for an average starting quarterback with more on the field experience, recruits will look at that and think to themselves, "I'm not gonna go all the way up north to sit on the bench, I can do that at Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Florida, Florida St" and on and on and on. Eugene isn't exactly the prime destination for 4 years of college. The kids want to shine on Saturdays like they saw Mariota and Herbert shine every single year. I guarantee you if Oregon just goes lazy and hits the portal every year for someone elses leftovers, elite quarterbacks will stop signing with the program.
And that is not even asking the obvious, "How is a kid supposed to gain on the field experience if you won't let them actually get........ya know, ON THE FIELD experience"?????? The TT's and Butterfield's are not going to get valuable experience riding the benching year after year after year. At some point you have to coach them up and kick them out the nest and see if they fly. Let these kids get on the field and lets see after 6-8 games what we have.
Now as far as me personally, I don't want to see one year starter after one year starter. How bout we actually DEVELOP a quarterback and he starts for THREE STRAIGHT years instead of changing systems and quarterbacks every 12 months? What is wrong with that?
I don't wish Bo ill will, He obviously wants a shot at the NFL and the coaches told him he will have that at Oregon, but what message did they just send Ty and Butter......enjoy the bench for another year.
I swear I will go ballistic if TT transfers and lights it up somewhere else. He trusted the school and came here to play football. He wasn't a distraction, he didn't bitch in social media, he didn't whine about not getting playing time despite watching the team get absolutely ROLLED twice in three weeks and didn't even get to play one snap to help the team. Now the current coaching staff is sending a message that hey, we are going to go with a more experienced starter and lets see how that goes. I don't like it. Him and Butter did their time on the bench, we should have never brought in Nix.

Good:
- Incredible arm strength
- Willing to take deep shots, and often
- Great at zone read
- Good zip on his throws
- His receivers this year were akin to UO in 2017-18, tons of drops on great throws
- Can scramble and make plays
Bad:
- Throws off his back foot way too often. Like way too often
- Tries to force some throws in tight windows
- Sometimes scrambles when he doesn't need to
- He can spin out of a lot of sacks....but when he doesn't get free it's for huge 10-20 yard losses
Overall, he is WAY better than Anthony Brown for sure. If he can get coached up on his footwork, namely stepping into throws instead of jumping back and slinging it, he will be very effective. I think he is very comparable to Bryan Bennett, who went on and had a brief stint in the NFL but is overlooked by Ducks fans since he was here when we had Marcus.
Also a decent amount of back shoulder throws. I already know he's gonna have some amazing scrambles and some really stupid scrambles.

Too, too, too many people relying on high school "recruiting rankings" in forming their opinions
It is borderline incomprehensible to suggest TT is Aaron Rodgers right now and MC and JM just are too stupid to actually do things that will make them millions of dollars and be at the very top top of there profession.

Calm down. You have zero insights into what is going on. The coaching staff is not complete and Lanning had been on board two weeks. Chill for your own sanity and if you go ballistic over someone transferring, well maybe this is all too much for you in general.QuackininBama wrote:Nix isn't even the issue. I'd feel better about winning the Pac-12 with Nix than TT. Personally.

I don’t think anyone is saying they are Aaron Rogers. Just that there is no way that Butters and Thompson are both complete misses. Those dudes threw for almost 200 TDs combined in HS. That is insane.
The previous coaching staff certainly didn’t do anything to help them be in position to lead the team next year. As much as I don’t like it, bringing in Nix is the right move. He knows the offense. If you don’t bring him in, you have three players with no experience that don’t know the offense. Not a good combo.

We got lucky Herbert was in our backyard. Outside of him we have missed on every HS recruit since we landed MM8. Literally we have been hot able at QB evaluation

It’s the new college draft. Prove yourself early, or prove it later. All schools are now in draft mode, and they are all in. It is, what it is. Whom you get as freshmen, doesn’t mean sh*t. If they don’t start year one or two, they are free agents. All about re-recruiting.

Ok, Aaron Rodgers is a bit much. Aaron Rodgers is probably a terrible example. Spent a year at Butte JC after getting no D1 offers other than a preferred walk-on spot at Illinois.northbeachsf wrote:OrTDuck wrote:Too, too, too many people relying on high school "recruiting rankings" in forming their opinions

But I'll go ahead and counter Butterfield and TT's almost 200 TD passes with Braxton Burmeister's 127 career TDs in high school. 11512 career passing yards, 127 TDs, even threw in 3459 career rushing yards. Still holds the California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section record for career yards, completions, and 35 other records. Four years in college (and the guy by all accounts works hard) but still seems at times like he is trying to figure out how to throw a forward pass.
A better example might be Trevor Lawrence or Bryce Young. As good as TT was as a prospect, he was a tier below that tier of recruits. That's not especially a knock as TT was a highly decorated guy who looked great and projected as **possibly** a great college player (at some point).

Re: Bo Nix is coming to Oregon
I won’t speak for BAMA, but some of us are still frustrated over MC’s stubbornness. I’m with BAMA on “we don’t know” if TT or Butters or Robby are any good because MC kept them pretty much locked away. Two of them are two of the highest rated QBs O has ever landed. Given the chance I suspect one of them could have stepped up, yet we may never know now. It isn’t on Lanning, but how did keeping them under lock and key help Oregon or them? And it will be frustrating if they transfer and become elite QBs elsewhere because it sure feels like nobody gave them a fair chance to compete and learn from game time decisions at Oregon. Bringing in Bo has to be frustrating to these guys. Not saying we shouldn’t have brought on Bo, but there will be fall out because of it and I feel for these young QBs who never really got a chance to show their wares.
Like Robby’s mom mentioned, she wants this coaching staff to truly let them compete for playing time. Me personally, i get the Bo move, but I hope I hope it doesn’t close the door on true QB competition

Re: Bo Nix is coming to Oregon
The transfer scenario was going to happen regardless. As soon as one guy is awarded the job the remaining guys will likely transfer. Bo Nix doesn’t change that, it just inserts a 4th guy into the competition.
Our hope should be that they can convince one of them to stick around as he’s one injury away from being the starter. Which, again, would have been the case with or without Bo Nix.

Re: Bo Nix is coming to Oregon
This isn't a rag on TT at all because the rating systems can unfairly set a high standard for a kid who needs more work. In the case of TT, it was clear in his film he didn't have to make a lot of reads and typically could throw to his first option. That lines up with the player we saw at times this season. Making that adjustment and getting your eyes to other places takes time. If Nix stays for two years and is the starter for all those games then it means he was the best QB. If TT takes over and only has 2 years as a starter, if he's got NFL potential then that's enough time.UofDuck wrote:I won’t speak for BAMA, but some of us are still frustrated over MC’s stubbornness. Most QBs aren't Day 1 ready as freshman.

True that QB’s are not ready on day one…but sad that AB wasn’t ready on day 1500
