He is so awful that he might finish the year with wins over Ohio State, Washington, Oregon State, and Oklahoma. So tired of the AB bashing.

You have to understand why people are frustrated though. Misses the easy throws and doesn’t make the hard ones.73duck wrote:> True that QB’s are not ready on day one…but sad that AB wasn’t ready on day 1500

I’m also tired of the AB bashing mostly because I think the blame mostly falls on Mario. Mario made AB worse with his offensive scheme. AB is a scapegoat for the teams regression, and sure he wasn’t stellar or anything, but a few games he showed he’s capable of being a solid QB but Mario ruined that.73duck wrote:> True that QB’s are not ready on day one…but sad that AB wasn’t ready on day 1500

I agree that Mario’s restriction of the offense really played a part in AB’s lack of production. But he also never saw wide open receivers down the field, which I don’t think Nix will. If Nix is the starter, I think we’ll see more interceptions but we’re going to actually throw the ball down field and take more shots than AB did, which is one reason I think AB didn’t throw as many picks and his stats looked half way decent.OregonFan4Life wrote:I’m also tired of the AB bashing mostly because I think the blame mostly falls on Mario. For me, I’m really hoping Ashford makes huge strides and wins the job. Dude is big with a big arm and can run, he would be fun to watch.

He won games running the ball. Nobody ever questions his work ethic, and he seems to have the respect of his teammates. Handles himself like an adult in public, win or lose. If you want to trash a player, pick one who isn't taking punishment every game to help his team win.

I hope at minimum we bring in Ashford for running packages like we did for Bennett in 2012

But even that’s not all on AB, it’s largely on Mario. Yes AB is limited when it comes to progression, that’s not his strength, but the whole passing game scheme was to give AB one read and if that’s not open he throws to the check down, everyone else is virtually a decoy. Not saying AB wouldn’t struggle with downfield reads but Mario’s offensive scheme especially with the passing game made it seem worse than it really is. AB wasn’t the main problem, Mario was. We’re better off with Mario in Miami.HomeSickDuck wrote:I agree that Mario’s restriction of the offense really played a part in AB’s lack of production. WOW! I actually wholeheartedly agree with this! Said it for a while and got roasted here by a lot of folks...OregonFan4Life wrote:But even that’s not all on AB, it’s largely on Mario. Do we know for sure that the play calling was only meant for one read though? And if so, maybe the reason for that was AB’s inability to read defenses and go through his progressions to find the open man, so everything was simplified. Look, I’m not trying to bash the guy, because as someone pointed out, he gave the teams everything he had and kept his head high through al the adversity. At the same time, it’s ok to be critical of his performance without people jumping to conclusions and saying people are trashing him. There have been some people who definitely have trashed him, but the vast majority haven’tOregonFan4Life wrote:But even that’s not all on AB, it’s largely on Mario. I definitely agree Mario severely handicapped our offense, as you can tell with how Justin is performing in the NFL compared to his last year at Oregon. But even then, we were taking shots and throwing it down the field with Justin, which also shows AB’s inability to do so.

Re: Bo Nix is coming to Oregon
I go back to Mariota, who had a horrible coaching staff but could make things happen with his feet and made the right reads and went through his progressions. He had so many plays break down yet he created results out of garbage play calling. He was hampered by a coaching staff that was fired the next year due to their issues, yet he won in spite of that and even brought Oregon thief first Heisman. That is a truly ready and game QB, AB had experience from plaiying in two conferences and being a starter for most of that time. But he would decide to run late, miss easy throws, miss wide open receivers and generally not see the field. Coaching hampered him yes, but the other issues he should have had a better handle on it. I do believe the staff bears some responsibility, especially when you have TT, Butters, Ashford and even Shough and it didn’t seem like any of them developed into ready QB’s. I applaud his work ethic and maybe with better coaching AB could have excelled, but the body of work that he has from this year (except the tOSU game), he would not be starting on any top ten team.

Two things can be true at the same time. Look at AB’s last pick against UCLA; DW was wide open and AB threw late and behind him, directly to the defender. After first blaming DW, Mario eventually admitted they never should have called that play. So even when they did call plays intended for guys down field AB didn’t have the ability to execute them.HomeSickDuck wrote:Do we know for sure that the play calling was only meant for one read though? This past year was a perfect storm of an extremely risk-averse, unimaginative coach with a QB that couldn’t consistently execute anything other than runs and check downs.

Marcus was coached for 3 years by Chip and Helf. Both solid QB coaches. There is a lot of narrative you can use about Helf as a HC, but he was a hell of a QBs coach.

I agree. There is virtually no evidence that Helf was a good coordinator or offensive mastermind as some here claim, however there is a LOT of evidence that QB's flourished under Helf.buckmarkduck wrote:OfaFeather wrote:I go back to Mariota, who had a horrible coaching staff but could make things happen with his feet and made the right reads and went through his progressions. Not sure what people are claiming, but Helf's offenses averaged over 100 yards more per game than Mario's did over the past four years. Also of note that Chip, his old boss, wanted him back when he got hired at UCLA. What kind of evidence were you looking for, exactly?DuckMastaFunk wrote:

Re: Bo Nix is coming to Oregon
I agree 100%. Helf was an EXCELLENT OC, just not even a capable head coach. Not everyone has the skill set to be head coaches at this level, and that is ok. But definitely, he can run an outstanding offense and can recruit with the best of them.
