Strategy Moving Forward?

Post by DmoneyDuck »

Given how prevalent the Transfer Portal is today and the caliber of player that's made available is increasing each year, would it be wise for the Oregon coaches to stop taking so many high school recruits and leave more room to take "Win Now" players?

The downside is you likely only get a kid in your program for one-two years, similar to how it used to be recruiting JuCo players to fill immediate needs.

However, kids these days aren't staying around two-three-four years to wait their turn (this is not a knock on the players, more of the reality that is taking place). So, if the HS recruit doesn't start right away, there is a high probability they'll enter the Transfer Portal.

Also, if you start taking 17-20 HS recruits each cycle, rather than the traditional 25, it allows the staff to be more selective, which would hopefully lead to more hits on the recruiting trail

Or the more cut-throat strategy that Mario appeared to be heading for. Take 25 every year, take all the transfers you want. Force out the excess older players. Pick your 85 from a larger pool of scholarship players each year.

While brutal and you have to be very good and desirable to maintain recruiting once everyone knows how you are operating you field the most talented team this way. It is how the super elite teams will be operating I speculate.

That’s how Bama and others have been operating for a long time. They take the 25 kids and then somehow get a few more in each year. And then some select transfers - Jameson Williams, Henry Tootoo, and two other transfers on top of a 27 man recruiting class. A class that had a total of 16 of the top 100 players, including seven 5-stars. 31 new bodies. The year before: 25 signees and 2 transfers. The year before that 27 and 2.

In a four year period Alabama enrolled 108 football players. Even with guys leaving early for the draft and some of those “paying their own way” as 4-star walk-ons it’s clear that the kids who aren’t good enough are either being shown the door or deciding to get playing time elsewhere.

It’s a business.

Much the same as some schools have huge endowments set up for the specific purpose of covering the cost of coaching salaries, I anticipate that eventually, the same will begin showing up in the for of NIL moneyseriously, is there anything prohibiting such action at this juncture?
There is certainly no way to prevent it, that I can see.
