Looks like Oregon will be getting visits from 2022 OT Josh Conerly, 2022 DL Lebbeus Overton, and transfer Micaiah Overton during the week of March 11th. Conerly will also be visiting USC on March 25th.

I’m literally a tax focused CPA and I have lots of experience with taxes in OR and CA, OR is getting tax heavier but believe me it does not compare to CA, no state, even NY, compares to CA when it comes to taxes…

It would be interesting to hear your estimate of what percent difference in total college earnings he'd lose out on from playing for USC in comparison to a school in a no income tax state on his short list. (ie Washington)

The thing about CA and specifically Los Angeles (and San Francisco) is that while CA does have the highest income tax (13.3% at the highest) that alone wouldn’t make it seem so much worse than other states (including OR, of course no taxes at WA is enticing). Where CA really gets you is all of the other taxes you have to worry about, property, gasoline tax, and especially the sales tax, in LA I believe the combined sales tax is over 10%, and all of this isn’t even considering the cost of living there (gas is at least $6/gallon in LA and it’s not like you aren’t using much gas there!). Of course a high school kid won’t think these things through and USC won’t advertise all of the CA taxes to them. With NIL deals schools will have to hire personal CPA’s whose jobs are to file tax returns for student athletes with NIL deals and they could even give pitches to recruits and parents about why NIL deals are more valuable at their school. Wouldn’t take me long to show a high school student why an NIL deal of $1,000,000 at the UofO is far more valuable than a $1,000,000 NIL deal at USC, and heck I’d even be willing to explain how corrupt CA is with their gross misuse of tax revenue! But I have a feeling that wouldn’t be a pitch that would be persuasive to high school kids.
