NIL money and use

Post by Alan »

I’m always late to the party but the more I learn about NIL and it’s rules or lack of rulesI wonder how long it will last in it’s current form? It was pointed out that NIL money could and is probably is being used to pay walk on’s. Texas A&M just went from signing two or three five stars to signing seven this year, sorry Nick. It is truly a rich get richer and poor get poorer system. With no rules, no salary caps and open recruiting of current players, I believe from Pitts WR transfer. I can’t see it in its current form lasting too many seasons, thoughts?

There are the economics of it that the market will settle over time, but also there is the inevitable results of giving young kids all that money before they have actually accomplished a lot. The NBA stopped letting high-schoolers jump to the league for a reason. Lack of financial maturity and/or motivation to work hard are likely going to claim the careers of some talented kids until some restrictions are put in place.

The *best* part of the whole NIL thing to me is that the athlete can just switch schools every year. Nico can bag 8mill at Tennessee then go somewhere else next year and bag another 8 mill

I want to disagree with you by saying an athlete would only get away with that once because it would raise commitment issues for a team but with the amount of pressure that’s on programs to win now only the poorer programs would shy away. I’m a fan of the NIL but there definitely needs to be some boundaries put in place.

Every big time football recruit the past 30 years has been paid for their services. Teams/players can just be open about it now

That is my point, it was against the rules, Bush lost his Hiesman, but now there are no rules or guidelines.

I find the frustration aimed at the NCAA very amusing but also confounding. The hollering went from "The rules are ridiculous!" to "There are no rules! What the hell!"

The model is very complex, and the enforcement mechanisms have not kept up because the NCAA has no real investigatory power (remember how pissed people were when the NCAA tried to leverage law enforcement?). People want a toothless NCAA to somehow keep all things in check. Reality is, you'd probably need an NCAA official on-campus at every major D1 school to regulate this all properly. And to that end, I hear people say "We need more NCAA officials" about as often as I hear them say "We need more people in the IRS."

For me the most frustrating thing about the NCAA for years is their inconsistent enforcement of rules and their inability to adjust as times have changed. If the NCAA was prepared and wasn’t full of stubborn and incompetent fools then they could’ve had reasonable rules and regulations that they could enforce, but the NCAA is no better than Larry Scott, probably worse, at doing nothing and acting like they deserve respect and praise.

The NIL is very messy, and the lack of regulations around it can be damaging to both high school and college football. Hopefully the NCAA gets new President that isn’t a worthless husky that can work with conference commissioners and university presidents to create reasonable boundaries that allows athletes to be fairly paid for their NIL but also won’t result in reduced parity in a league that had almost no parity to begin with.

I already posted my idea as to how the NCAA could potentially fix this but won’t post it again, for most it’s probably TLDR.

As a CPA I find this whole NIL situation extremely fascinating.

The thing is, the Collective paid for Nico’s rights so he is locked in. He can leave TN, but his money dries up and he can’t sign another NIL deal. So he’ll very likely stay.

His NIL deal states that in order to collect on his NIL deal he has to be present in Knoxville, Tennessee’s creative way around the quid pro quo rules from the NCAA.

The NBA stopped high schoolers because the teams kept over drafting them and paying them big money. Many (most?) didn’t work out. They did it to protect themselves from themselves, not because they felt any responsibility to the kids.

See Qyntel Woods and Darius Miles.....

Disasters off the court, but can you blame them?

Eh, I think a big portion of it was the kids declaring for the NBA draft out of high school, not getting drafted, and then being s*** out of luck because college was no longer an option.
