A 253lbs. DT? Great, I thought we were trying to get bigger upfront so that our undersized D-Line would stop getting pushed around...pikestick wrote:Easley was being recruited as a DT for us, was recruited as one for Florida, and played as one in the Under Armor gameNCDucks09 wrote: What we really need are DT's, CB's, and RB's.
I highly doubt Easley was being recruited as a DT or NT. Most likely a pass rusher with that 4.7 speed and strength.

I was watching some of the UA practices and they announcers said that wherever he ended up he'd probably start out on the outside but eventually will end up inside. Apparently he's over 260 now and still has a lot of room to grow.NCDucks09 wrote:A 253lbs. DT? You realize kids get bigger between high school and college, right? Like a 253 pound kid in high school can get to 275+ pretty easily? He has the frame to be BIG. And anyways, weight is hardly the only thing that determines if a kid is going to be a successful d-lineman.NCDucks09 wrote:A 253lbs. DT? Who'd you rather have...265lbs Brandon Bair or 325lbs Igor Olshansky...nuff said.

All I'm saying, is there IS a strong correlation between Strength and Size and Weight! Statistics support the general assumption.
How many 265lbs DT's or NT's do you see in the NFL? My guess would be zero.
I know these kids can grow 20 lbs over the course of a year or two on the line. However, if we get a DT at starting weight of 260lbs, then he bulks up to 280lbs, but our rival school recruits a Guard at a starting weight of 290 and bulks up to a 310lbs, then the mismatch is still there.

however, when you get DTs that are 285 and run 4.7 40s, Darnell Docketts happen.NCDucks09 wrote:Lol!ncduck wrote:Bringing up Fat Albert makes it way more logicaler.

Re: Easley to Florida
The point is that he has a frame to add a significant amount of weight, and with some time in a college weight room will do so. He absolutely dominated the Under Armor game as a DT, taking home the MVP award... against significantly bigger O-Linemen.
The average weight of DTs for the teams playing in BCS Bowls (with weights taken from the ESPN/Rivals databases) is ~290 pounds, and that average is about the same whether or not you consider the primary backups. Terrance Cody probably brings that up a couple pounds by himself. The Ohio State DTs are listed at 292 and 276 and Oregon had a hell of a problem with the one that's 276. Iowa's starting DTs are listed at 285 and 258, with their backups at 267 and 285. TCU is the only BCS team listed as having both starting DTs over 300 pounds (Alabama is the only team listed as a 3-4 defense).
To be completely cliche, at the college level it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Easley has a lot of fight, and if he gains weight as expected, will be able to be a hell of a defensive lineman at DE or DT.

igor never weighed 325. he was around 285 or so. heck, he's listed @ 315 for the cowboys right now and I doubt he's that big now 16 weeks into the season. most players lose weight through the season. some lose as much as 10 lbs. a game. a ton of NFL DT's don't weigh 300lbs. a good chunk of them are 290 ish or so.

Re: Easley to Florida
We all obviously want more depth at the DT position. Honestly we're really just mincing words about ideal weights and whatnot.
I'm not giving up on the idea that Bair could add a bit more weight. His frame could hold another 20 lbs and still play very similar to how he has this year with the added dimension of being able to hold his ground a little better.
The real issue is long term depth at the postion.

Re: Easley to Florida
I'm with Dray dub. And you're completely wrong. Bair was 235 lbs when he was a recruit. Easley is 260+ lbs. Easley can EASILY be molded into a DT. (And Olshansky was only 290-285 when he was recruited)NCDucks09 wrote:Let me ask one question to quell this debate...Tray Dub wrote:You realize kids get bigger between high school and college, right?
