Recruiting Implication of Belotti at USC

Post by hendrg »

Let's just go worst case scenario here. Belotti decides he doesn't like being AD, his commentating gig will still be there in the future and he still wants a shot at finally getting to the RB or NC.

He goes to 'SC. :o :o :o

Does this take a good amount of our contacts with him? He was the head of the program for 14 years, so I imagine that a lot of the relationships that have been developed with HCs at good HS programs have either been through him or at least involved him.

Would like this kind of be like when a long-term couple breaks up and their friends have to start picking sides?

I don't believe he would take the sc job. say he wants to coach another
3-5 years and they are put on probation for 3 years with no rb or nc chance.
and they have scholarships taken away. then he wouldn't be doing what
he set out to do. Like someone else said on another thread he is very
loyal to the u of o. I just dont see him going to so cal. im thinking sark is
gonna change his mind and bolt the fuskies. someone else mentioned has
been chris peterson from boise. now that would be interesting to say the
least. but the sanctions when they come is gonna put a crimp in so cals
ability to land a big time coach. just my thoughts tho....

USC would have to swing and miss on A LOTTTTTT of people for Bellotti to get an offer from USC, aka - they would have to be desperate. I don't think that would go over well with Bellotti's ego.

SC's in a world of hurt.

I don't see ANY coach going there until they know what the sanctions will be, because those are certainly coming. In the meantime, they're going to lose a good deal of their recruiting class, and I'd venture to guess a bunch of current players will transfer out as well.

As far as Belotti's concerned, I've heard he's really loving being the AD and his announcing gig and has no desire to be anywhere else right now. In the future that might change, but this SC situation is not the right one for him.

In fact I would guess that if/when Belotti goes elsewhere, it almost certainly will be to another conference. Just my guess. I don't think we have anything to worry about w/ this situation because it's quickly turning into a good old fashioned shitstorm. And where and when better for that to happen!

All that's fine and good - and probably true.

But much like your 'would you rather' thread Glazeduck, you guys didn't answer the question.

The 'SC scenario is just an excuse to discuss how much of the Oregon recruiting process is Belotti and his connections. Another way to put it is: do the direct relationships of the assistant coaches (ie. coach Azz and Easley's HS) have more of an impact than the Head Coach and his contacts at various high schools?

Oregon is not Mike Bellotti, not by a chance. Mike leaves and recruiting will be fine, heck, maybe he'd take the greatest Defensive Coordinator ever with him too. SC will always recruit. Sure, Mike and other coaches have their own ties to places, but if you are that bad of a recruiter (salesperson) that you can't make your own connections and sell the program without the help of Mike, the school and program will have serious problems.

So no, if MB goes to SC our recruiting will be effected only by having Mike try to fight CK for some of the same recruits, which before it was fighting Pete Carroll. PC > MB at recruiting, therefore Orgon FTW

MB just had both of his knees replaced. He's literally at his home walking around with a walker.

He's not going to be the HC at SC.

next.

Actually he's still in the hospital, per Ted Miller.

which backs up my point that he's not going to be the HC at SC. My dad had both knees replaced and was using the walker for weeks. Did the people talking about MB at SC even realize he had both knees replaced? I'm guessing no because if they did know and still thought it was realistic, they might want to rethink their ability to think for themselves.

obtw, did you know you can get half-knee replacements? i didn't know that either until my dad got them. And they look really weird.

Very fair point! That did annoy me a little so I'll answer your question...

ASSUMING the scenario where Belotti somehow DID go to SC. He'd certainly have his contacts at the high school level, especially in Cali where he was a great recruiter, but I doubt those high school coaches would all of a sudden turn on Oregon.

No doubt we've done alot w/ our recruits over the last decade and while MB played a role in that, so did the rest of our staff who, presumably, would stay on board. Even best case for MB, I don't think his presence would do anything more for him than simply being the head coach of SC would, especially in Oregon and California. Additionally, I feel our chances would be almost exactly the same (maybe 99.5% the same) given the fact that Kelly and the rest of the staff has been around now for awhile. The fact is that Oregon and Chip Kelly are on the map now.

Belotti is Belotti and certainly has relationships w/ many of these High School coaches, but I'd venture to guess that our staff has just as many, if not more and better relationships w/ high school coaches than JUST MB.

Just my 2 cents.

That's an interesting point. I hadn't thought of that. He may not be very mobile by spring ball which would really put them behind. Still, I think if offered, he would consider it.

As far as the hypothetical scenario that he did accept the job, I don't think it would have any impact on recruiting unless he purges the coaching staff. Many of these recruits develop better relationships with them than the Head Coach. If they leave the recruit could look elsewhere.

Glaze and others thanks for answering the hypothetical!

Knee replacement is no joke, my dad did it last year and it took him a good 8-10months to really get moving again - and that was only one knee.

What's the best scenario for the Ducks here? I'm thinking an NFL guy, since according to George Schroeder's column, Carroll was the exception and they usually don't have a ton of success in college.

I'm hoping for very light restrictions on USC for breaking the rules, because I don't think they'll return to dominance for at least a few years and I don't want them having this as their excuse for the Ducks taking a couple Pac-10 championships in a row!

but that's the point we are trying to make. HE WON'T BE OFFERED...therefore everything is a moot point. SC would be STUPID to offer him because HE CAN'T MOVE and won't be able to move for about a month. Hell, he probably won't be able to "walk" until late February and when he can "walk", it will be with a cane. MB won't be normal until summer.

Apparently, some are saying that he is on a short list of candidates: http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksb ... sc_no.html
