If BYU wins, then Iowa State plays ASU for the Big 12 championship. If BYU loses, Colorado plays ASU for the Big 12 championship.

So if Clemson wins, does this make it harder for 3 loss SEC team to make it into the playoffs?

Or better, since two different southeastern corner of the US conference schools beat Clemson this season.

I suppose so. I figured SMU would get at large nod over those SEC teams though.

Yea, I have no idea how the committee is going to parse the ACC, Big 12, and Deliverance Conference from each other. South Carolina won, but Kentucky got embarrassed and Georgia looked overmatched for large stretches against a mid-level team from another conference. Justifying 3-loss teams got harder this weekend in my opinion.

I’m thinking we see
4 Big Ten teams
3 SEC teams
2 ACC teams
Notre Dame
Boise State
Big 12 Champ

Coach 'Prime' meltdown rant in 3...2...1...

ESPN is going to tie themselves in knots trying to argue for 5 SEC teams & Colorado in the playoffs.

I think it's going to be 4 bible belt teams, as I don't think the ACC is getting a second team in. I hope to be surprised but Clemson is out with a loss and SMU has looked great but has only one win that's stood the test of time with Louisville.

My guess:
4 Big 10
4 SEC (South Carolina or Bama as the 4th team, or only 3 teams if Clemson beats SMU)
ACC Champ (if SMU wins, they get 2 if Clemson wins)
Notre Dame
Boise St
Big 12 Champ

Notre Dame is the new #1!!!

According to Sagarin ratings.... LOL.
I don't know what happened, Sagarin used to be reliably unbiased. Now it's ratings are crap! It looks like they have shifted more weight to the poll rankings for both strength of schedule & overall rating.?

Clemson, SMU, and Louisville are also in the Bible Belt, so looks like that region wins either way.

That Paul Finebaum clown pisses me off. TOTAL SEC HONK! He said that the SEC was a far tougher conference. Yeah, with 4 cupcakes a year and 7 home games.

Finebaum still has only three SEC teams making it. He brought up a good point: if you let a fourth one in, there are going to be two more who will argue they deserved it more. So the committee might decide to avoid that issue entirely and not pick any of the three.

The expanded playoff might mean that undefeated teams like Liberty & FSU last year don't get shut out of a chance at the championship, but the expanded conferences have become so disassociated from themselves that it is almost necessary to have conference playoffs to determine which is the best team in the end.

This is of course by design so a system of voting on who is better can supersede records determined by actual gameplay to keep the money flowing where they want it to.

Here is an interesting take on the subject that I can at least partially agree with.
