To be fair, Tuioti is a half a sack behind JT Tuimoloau, the second most overrated player in the conference, who was voted as first team ahead of Uiagalelei.

I just felt it weird that STU has repeatedly bagged on Tuioti for some weird reason.
You have a very loose definition of "bagging on" if you think my questioning of why a single player gets 95% of the snaps when the first three guys on the depth chart have comparable talent and room for growth.

Unfortunately, I do wonder if there's a 'coach's kid' situation happening here and that's why we're seeing a concentration of guys at one position hit the portal.
Per The Oregonian snap counts (which do not include special teams) and GoDucks.com defensive stats

Tuioti has played 568 snaps and has 54 total tackles, 6.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks, and 5 QBH

Winston has played 244 snaps and has 8 tackles, 0 TFL, 0 sacks, and 0 QBH

Seems like one player has been far more effective no matter who their father is. It also would seem strange that a maniac like Lanning would let a position coach give preference to any player if they looked poor on film compared to other players.

That's really good data. Could you add Jaedon Moore and Blake Purchase, just to complete the look?

Winston, specifically, lined up in a lot of different positions, including defensive tackle. He's better in coverage than Tuioti, and neither would I say is a great pass rusher (yet) despite benefiting from the double teams going the way of Harmon, Matayo and Burch.

I can understand why some of those guys are leaving even if I don't have to like it.

Matayo is back next year for crying out loud to make himself into a potential Top 5 pick. Teitum is likely a 4-year guy for us which means that's a ton of reps over the next 2 years taken by guys who are still just Sophomores.

I like our new project in Tobi Haastrup too - kid might end up with a faster get-off than KT so if that can be harnessed, he could find himself in similar company as Abdul Carter is this year.

Moore had 104 snaps, 6 tackles, 1 TFL, .5 sacks, 2 QBH

Purchase had 36 snaps, 2 tackles, .5 TFL, .5 sacks, 0 QBH

Porter had 26 snaps, 4 tackles, .5 TFL, .5 sacks, 0 QBH

Rushing had 18 snaps and Breland had 15. Neither are listed for any production.

For clarity, per 500 snaps:

Tuioti: 47.5 tackles, 5.7 TFL, 4.8 sacks, 4.4 QBH
Purchase: 27.8 tackles, 6.9 TFL, 6.9 sacks, 0 QBH
Moore: 28.8 tackles, 4.8 TFL, 2.4 sacks, 9.6 QBH
Winston: 16.4 tackles, 0 TFL, 0 sacks, 0 QBH

This doesn't really move me off of my thinking that multiple guys deserve playing time to develop.

That’s fine, and true for basically every position on the team especially at DB and WR where they used the same group nearly the entire season outside of garbage time. There’s also the issue of redshirt status. Purchase went from playing in every game last season to only four prior to the championship game this year. That appears to be intentional by the specific number.

The fact is it wasn’t anywhere near close to being a 90/10 rotation at the OLB spot and the per play stats prove they were playing the most productive player at the position 2/3rds of the time.

To be clear, by year's end, it was pushing 90/10. In the conference championship, Tuioti had 52 plays and Purchase/Moore/Winston had a combined 5 (2, 2, and 1) (90/10). In the regular season finale, it was 35 for Tuioti to 16 combined for the other three (70/30). And as far as per play stats, tackles yes but 'havoc' no.

We can absolutely disagree on this. I understand why you'd limit the rotation at Matayo, Burch, and Harmon's spots, but I'm a little bit disappointed by the lack of rotation at the other edge spot, as well as in the defensive backfield this season.

To be even clearer, the Oregonian article states that there were 58 defensive snaps in the Washington game, and Tuioti played 35 of them. That's almost exactly 60%, which left 40% for backups. The championship game, also per the Oregonian, saw the defense playing 76 snaps, Tuioti played 52 of those, or 68.4%. Neither of those is anywhere near 90%.

Also, you have Purchase pro-rated stats per 500 snaps, but his sample size in reality (36 snaps vs 568 for Tuioti) is way too small to make a legitimate comparison, especially as Tuioti is likely playing vs starters and Purchase probably mostly in the garbagiest of garbage times.

If the coaches are giving the starter two thirds of the snaps and back-ups 1/3, that seems like a decent ratio for development. The problem, as I stated above, is that there were too many mouths to feed. Since I don't think Lanning had any trouble counting, I assume finding the best one and letting a few of the others walk was always part of the calculus.

Gunnar Hansen to Florida State. Phew. He did not statistically seem like a good fit for us. World is the top choice, but Harkey would be very serviceable too.

G-Dave Iuli
C-Iapani Laloulu
G-Matthew Bedford
T-?

Could still use World.

Good news. I imagine O-linemen are hard to find in the portal, so glad they found a decent one. Interesting that he used to be at Colorado; I'm guessing he was one of the myriad of cuts Deion made when he got there? If so, it has to be gratifying to be able to make his way back on an even better team.

If we get another OT we can safe assume that Josh is indeed gone to the NFL.
