Re: Coaching Hot Seat
Other openings and potential openings are as follows:
Arkansas - I wouldn't be surprised to see Dan Mullen hired here or at Auburn.
Auburn - Hugh Freeze is definitely on the hot seat. If he's fired, they could replace him with Mullen, Joe Brady, or maybe the guy at Vanderbilt?
Colorado - Does Deion stay at CU? He's having trouble getting over the hump and his continued health issues make me think he may step down.
Florida - I think Billy Napier could be fired at any moment. I'd LOVE to see them hire Jedd Fisch away from Washington.
LSU - I wouldn't be surprised to see Brian Kelly as a candidate for the Penn State job, or at Michigan.
Michigan - See above. Sherrone Moore is an average coach, at best. I could see them going after James Franklin or Brian Kelly, who had great success at Central Michigan.
North Carolina - I could see Belichek out at the end of the season. Candidates could be Franklin, the guy from Vanderbilt or Brian Brohm at Louisville.
Oklahoma - Brent Venables has had an awful time with injuries this year and last. I think he'll get another year, but if he were let go, I could see Josh Heupal at Tennessee as a possible replacement, as well as James Franklin.
USC - I think they'll lose at least 2, maybe 3 more games this year and the fans and alums are sick of him. The problem with Riley is he has a huge buyout, so this is a "wait and see" scenario. Also, who would they replace him with? The grass isn't always greener.
Virginia Tech - These guys seem set on bringing in Shane Beamer from South Carolina, but he may not want to have to try to live up to his Dad's legacy.
Wisconsin - Luke Fickel is in a pickle. He'll be gone after this year, but who do they replace him with? James Franklin's name will certainly come up again. It's hard to say.
Thoughts?

Re: Coaching Hot Seat
Wisconsin is rumored to have a preferred candidate but I haven't heard who it is. Annoying, but I would go get James Eck from New Mexico.
Brohm won't leave his alma mater for UNC.
USC will probably win enough to keep Riley.
If Fisch does go to Florida, who washington goes after will be a very interesting conversation. Franklin would be a good fit there but he may be under contract somewhere by the time that happens.
Oregon State's search interests me. I think bringing a grissled coach who runs a tight ship is the way to go, like Paul Chryst or Bronco Mendenhall.

I forgot about UCLA. I'd be surprised if they kept the current staff. Dave Aranda is a name that comes to mind there.StevensTechU wrote: Sat Oct 18, 2025 7:03 am Wisconsin is rumored to have a preferred candidate but I haven't heard who it is. Annoying, but I would go get James Eck from New Mexico.

I'd be surprised to see Franklin take a job on the west coast. He was an assistant at WSU and Idaho State in 98-99', but all his other jobs have been in the east.
Gus Mahlzan and Bobby Petrino are two more names to watch for the Arkansas job. I'm shocked that they even allowed Petrino back on campus after what happened before, but I guess football rules all in the south.
I hate to say it, but the downfall of Beavis is kind of a drag. Hated rival, yes. Still, a school from Oregon that usually had several in-state players. I think they and WSU both got a raw deal, but it is as it is. Personally, I wonder how they'll get a decent coach to come there? Especially one who wouldn't be looking at it as a stepping stone.
Dan Mullen took a UNLV job that wasn't in bad shape. He won't be there long.

It will be interesting to see if Wisconsin goes with a more known coach like Lance Leipold or if they go with a younger coach like Jason Eck.StevensTechU wrote: Sat Oct 18, 2025 7:03 am Wisconsin is rumored to have a preferred candidate but I haven't heard who it is. Jason*. Thanks there.
Leipold has done more with less. Would also be good. I don't know if Wisconsin gives the support for anyone to be great, though.

Re: Coaching Hot Seat
Will any coaches be let go this week? Seems like all the coaches on the hot seat at big programs (except Fickell) either won this week or lost very competitive games against good teams. And it would be strange if Wisconsin didn't let Fickell finish out the season.
If I'm Wisconsin, I'm hiring Leipold and letting him bring in Andy Kotelnicki as his OC and Jim Leonhard as his DC. I think that staff could rebuild their program.

And looks like Florida just canned Billy Napier...after he beat MSU. Interesting...firing him no matter the result.

Be careful what you wish for...I'm sure rivals loved seeing Willie T and Mario leave...only for us to get Lanning and wipe the smile off their faces.

Always a possibility. The coaching talent on the West Coast isn't the greatest this year, though. washington's list of candidates would likely consist of names like Will Stein, Jonathan Smith, Tosh Lupoi and D'anton Lynn.pdxduck2013 wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 11:16 amBe careful what you wish for...I'm sure rivals loved seeing Willie T and Mario leave...only for us to get Lanning and wipe the smile off their faces.

Yeah, I don’t get the entire Fisch thing. He’s a pretty mediocre HC in my opinion, so I don’t understand why he’d be enticing for Florida, nor why we’d want him to leave Washington, outside of a reason to s*** talk them. I’d say there’s a higher likelihood of them stumbling into a better coach than Fisch ever doing anything of significance there.

I think he can coach Offense well, not sure about being a complete HC for him yet.droop10 wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 11:25 am Yeah, I don’t get the entire Fisch thing. Jay Norvell out at Colorado State. He's been ineffective since coming over from Nevada. The local impact is whether Oregon State can claim to be a better job or not than CSU as they'll be in-conference opponents going forward.

Re: Coaching Hot Seat
I would be worried about them throwing big money at someone like Pete Kwiatkowski from Texas. Give him Jeff Choate and Bob Gregory as co-DC's and a solid OC like Harsin, and that program would have the potential to be really good. That Petersen Boise State crew would be frustrating to have back at UW.StevensTechU wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 11:23 amAlways a possibility. Didn't even think about Smith or Tosh until you mentioned them, but they both coached at UW previously so either would be a realistic hire.

Re: Coaching Hot Seat
Kwiatkowski would make a lot of sense. I want him to get a job somewhere just so he leaves Texas. It's crazy to me that since Sark took over at Texas, they've had a crap offense, good-to-great defense, and yet all the credit goes to Sark and not Pete.
All that said, Pete doesn't strike me as a CEO type of coach, and I question how he'd do running a major program.
