I’m already a big Stewart fan. He’s got some heart. Goes after every loose ball and rebound like he wants it. His motor reminds me a lot of Elgin Cook.

Edit: And he bricks a pair of UGLY free throws right after I post that. This really is the worst shooting team I can remember at Oregon. No one has touch other than Shelstad.

Ducks win 67-63. We probably don’t win this one without Shelstad.

This team will get better as they gel and grow chemistry, but this is a limited team and the ceiling looks to be middle of the road B1G team. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong but this team doesn’t look like they’ll be capable of making a run to win the B1G or making a deep run in the tourney. Maybe second round if they make the tourney and get the right matchup, but I don’t see anything beyond that.

I know duck fans are forbidden from saying anything negative about Altman, but it’s crazy to me how badly Oregon failed to capitalize off of that Final Four run.

Mostly with you there, but he’s a career 51% FT shooter and he looks it. Gotta figure that out or they can’t play him down the stretch in close games.

Best improvement over the opener was they really cut down on the turnovers from 21 to 12, which is attributable to Shelstad being back and the opening night jitters being out of the way. Hopefully Pryor isn't seriously hurt because he's proving to be a good rebounder and defender.

Not that a win requires silver lining, but Oregon won this despite taking what felt like Rice’s best punch. Rice hit big shot after big shot while Oregon beat the s*** out of the rim again.

Minus the horrid 6pt possession last they handed Rice on multiple occasions and the continued drought from the 3pt line, they looked much better tonight. Defense in the second half was good to great, they moved the ball much better, Bittle effectively attacked the basket.

There’s something in there with this team. Don’t know if they’ll find it in time for Vegas, but in Altman we Trust.

And then that 2019-20 team led by Pritchard that would have been Sweet 16 or better had it not been for COVID.

I think this team actually has a lot of potential. They have some good players. Shelstad and Bittle are elite. We know Kwame can contribute against anyone. We’ve got a couple guys with that dog in them with Stewart and Pryor (assuming Pryor isn’t injured). I hate Simpkins, but he’ll have a couple games where he scores 20 because he can’t stop shooting. Lin is clearly talented, but totally lost in the offense and forcing awful shots up. Lindsay looks talented but tentative.

Altman will bring this group together, and they’ll end up being a good team. I don’t think this team has what it takes to make a run simply because they only have like two guys that can shoot. But I think it will be a fun season.

I agree with the disappointment in not being able to build on the final four run. I think the landscape has changed since then with the portal and NIL, but if you look at the blueprint for that team… Four of the top six contributors were career-long Oregon guys, who came up in Altman’s system. The three best players, Brooks, Bell and Dorsey, developed under Altman. The only meaningful transfers were Boucher, a juco kid (I have a soft spot for juco kids because juco was the only reason I ended up with a D1 athletic scholarship), and Ennis, a role player. I can’t help but think the potential for that happening again was there with the Bittle, Shelstad, Evans trio. It just sucks that Altman couldn’t surround those guys with some shooters. This should have been an all-in situation, and we ended up with scrubs like TK Simkpins. The 40% three point shooting role players were out there. I doubt they exceeded our NIL budget. Altman just s*** the bed.

Altman is a good coach, as evidenced by his never having lost a first round game in the NCAA tourney. He probably isn't competing well in the new NIL situation though. Oregon just doesn't get the fans for basketball that other schools get.

My early take after watching 3 of the first 4 games:

This team is not as good early as last year's team, but they have more high end potential once they play together more because we have better athletes this year and more depth inside.

If the lineup is:
Shelstad
Simpkins (There were much better 2 guards available in the portal, but I think we were NIL constricted).
Pryor
Kwame
Bittle

Main bench guys:
Wei Lin
Lindsey
Stewart

Lesser bench guys:
Demir
Kobzystyi
Phillips? (Is he hurt?)


I'm still convinced Lin is going to get it together in another month or so and be a major spark plug off the bench. Sean Stewart has been a stud so far.
