Cumberland/Willamette vs Mountainside 11/7/2025

Post by spacefrog13x »

Got a chance to see him in action Friday for Willamette. It was WHS first home playoff game in 18 years. That program just fell off a cliff after Marty Johnson left to coach Sheldon. Its good to see my old HS back in the thick of things.

Cumberland had one sack, but was in the backfield pretty much the entire game. Mountainside only really got going when he came out for breathers. He seemed to have a high motor, especially since the Mountainside OL was completely overmatched. Once the game was in hand, he started to seem bored and the coaches pulled him.

Zeke Thomas has some nice zip on his passes for a sophomore. Throws a really nice deep ball and is mostly accurate. Hard to judge talent since he was throwing to wide open guys all game. Mountainside was doubling WHS's top WR the whole game and it left giant gaps all over the field for Thomas to throw into.

With all the former Oregon coaching talent at WHS, i wonder if they will become a stash spot for guys like Cumberland who are hard commits waiting to transition to spring ball.

How much of Willamette's success due to Cumberland? Curious if his impact is substantial, or if Willamette was already trending up before he joined them.

Josh Line is one of the top HS coaches in the State and he took over 2 years ago after being at Sheldon and that's when everything started for them.

There's a transfer problem in the OSAA and right now Willamette got a bunch of new players over the last two years. Its not as bad as all the kids ending up in the Three Rivers League and the OSAA isnt going to do anything about it since they aren't a forward thinking operation. Mountainside actually had a big time played end up at either Lake O or West Linn off the top of my head.

It wont be until the Semi's that the 6A games start to look competitive.

Recruiting and transferring has been going on forever.. I was recruited by North Eugene to play baseball even though I lived deep in Bethel. I was offered a spot on the Pepsi Challengers if I moved over to NE
I didn't even know this was a thing that bothered folks until I read that article about it a while ago.
