I've never understood why the new school doesn't lowball the coach since the coach won't make any extra money, especially now when you use the excess funds for NIL. There has to be a contractual reason.

I believe it was part of the offset language in Franklin's contract, he was required to ask for maximum reasonable value.

We'll see what his contract details are. If I'm Virginia Tech, I'm not paying him more than I paid Brent Pry. I might even go lower as long as I was paying $1 more than the lowest ACC coach. Why would I? Those amount both are arguably "reasonable values." Whatever amount it is, it won't be more than what Penn State owes him, therefore all my money is just going to Penn State's program indirectly.
I bet there's a detail I'm not aware of in the contracts, or I'm dramatically underestimating the risk of litigation.
Instead of Penn State paying $49M to Franklin, they'll pay him just $9M, and Virginia Tech will likely be paying every penny they have available to him. Money saved by PSU to put into NIL and money reduced by VT for theirs. I just don't get it.

Lane Kiffin has an offer of $90M/7 years, with a $25M annual roster guarantee, from LSU. Reportedly will announce his next move after the game against Mississippi State.
James Franklin's deal with Virginia Tech average over $6M/yr, which is close to 50% more than they paid their previous coach but less than Franklin would make from his buyout from Penn State. It's backloaded, though, so it sounds like the buyout affected their strategy there.

Maybe, but I can think of 54 million reasons why coaches like Brian Kelly still might want to chase bigger jobs even if they don't work out. Not everyone is built like Coach Lanning.
I think we happen to be one of about 10-15 schools that as long as you're winning games, you'll have all the resources and money you need to be there long-term unless you have an NFL itch.
What might be more interesting is if it becomes a trend of the Lanning "coaching" tree since Dillingham has been quite vocal about being in Tempe long term; with Stein also being a young coach, he might stay in his role until he lands a similar HC job in a place he won't need to think about moving on for a better situation.
Portland State has fired Bruce Barnum. Crazy how long he has been at PSU. 11 seasons as Head Coach and 5 seasons prior to that as OC under Nigel Burton.

Really wanted Barnum to succeed. Easy guy to root for. It was time, though.
Elsewhere, Florida State announced that Norvell is coming back. Perhaps they looked at the vacant jobs that had more money to spend and decided to wait until next cycle.
