DB Sione Laulea enters portal

Post by greenyellow »

DB Sione Laulea has announced he'll be entering the transfer portal. Not a real surprise with how he lost snaps to younger guys and he's been battling injuries this year.

I'm not loving losing guys before the playoffs are over. I also don't love losing Sione because he's a good player and fringe NFL guy.

I'm sure there will be a new thread, but Kingston Lopa is also entering the portal and leaving the team immediately.

That’s odd about Lopa, seemed like he had plenty of snaps yesterday, maybe this explains the lack of effort from some of the reserves last night.

Or this is the result of the lack of effort

Did Laulea even play last night? When Johnson got hurt, it seemed like Ify had to stay in and play with the backups.

This seems unprecedented for Lopa and Laulea. Agents/talking heads telling them to bail out during a championship run? Lanning telling them mid-run they aren’t going to be in the mix? Players upset they didn’t get enough run during a blowout? Other teams coming at them during this run with financial incentives? Would really love to know what goes through these guys heads during a playoff push. Are these kids just so soft? What makes a player leave a team with possibly only a week or two remaining in the season? Lame Kiffin be damned. College sports is the Wild West today, and I am not liking it.

Curious if guys sitting 3-4 on the depth chart of other natty contending teams have also entered the transfer portal these past few weeks?

Makes sense, we are stacked at corner.

Laulea is really good, though. He's not as strong as some other guys, but there isn't a corner on the roster with better ball skills. I wish we got to see more reps (which, I'm sure, is why he's transferring) but if you asked would I rather have Theron or Laulea, I'd have a hard time picking.

I wish the staff was a little easier to understand regarding their choices around playing the 'best guy' versus playing the guy with more eligibility who will make more mistakes. It feels like a little bit of a hodgepodge. The example here is that Theron might have a slight edge to Laulea but exhausts his eligibility this year, and Na'eem Offord is worse than both of them but has time to improve. Both saw more snaps when all were healthy.

I don't know remotely close to what you know about ball, but I think it's as simple as the best people play, especially with a playoff/title run on the line. If that wasn't always the case then that could create tension on the roster as more-deserving players are benched. Seems like what we saw with Brock Thomas this year, too... lots of folks assumed Novastad would be the backup because of his assumed talent/resume, but Thomas proved it in practice and got the minutes. That just seems to be the simplest way to win while keeping the most guys happy -- be the best or get some rest.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

Nature of the beast, not enough snaps to play all your talent. Offord is definitely the most raw. It makes more sense why he wasn't getting more time throughout the year.

It's not that straightforward, though. In my example, if that was the case them Offord wouldn't be getting snaps over Laulea.
