#1 overall 2026 G/F Tyran Stokes considering Oregon

Post by greenyellow »

In what has been a confusing recruitment, Oregon has somehow made the top 3 for #1 overall 2026 recruit Tyran Stokes, alongside Kentucky and Kansas. Oregon was thought to have been eliminated long ago in what many were thinking was a Kansas/Kentucky battle. Some positives in Oregon's favor are they'd guarantee him the starting PG role and he's good friends with recent portal commit Jasper Johnson.

Is it wrong of me to prefer Mikey Lewis + Colby Garland/Preston Edmead over him?

If we do get Stokes, and we lost a lot of these other guys at the expense of him, I'm not so sure it is worth it. :/

I am not expecting this kid to come to Oregon, but to me it makes sense that good players would look at the opportunity for early minutes at a Big Ten school and jump at it last minute. Seems like we've lost recruits to programs that could guarantee more playing time, so it would be nice to pick up a couple on the other end.

Honestly, I'd take Stokes over that combo any day of the week. While the floor is perhaps lower, the ceiling definitely increases. I think the risk is whether he can truly play PG. I can't imagine Altman would be offering him that if he didn't think he could handle it, but having a guy that's projected to go top 3 in the next NBA draft is not someone I would turn down. The experience of the other guys is nice, but they definitely have a lower ceiling, and hopefully they can sign a serviceable backup PG. I'm not sure that Stokes is necessarily preventing them from getting a combo of those 2 you listed. Feels like they were always destined to only get 1 of the 3. If I have to choose which option would have me most excited going into next year, I'd take number 1 recruit in the nation over a couple of mid major transfers.

That said, going up against 2 blue bloods that are willing to invest in their teams, I fully expect the Ducks to get outbid and people to complain that Altman can't close when ultimately it's just a matter of him not being able to offer as much money to these guys as other programs.

I'd just rather have two guys who combine 35-40ppg on really good shooting numbers. Stokes is such an unknown. And not just in the areas you said, but he's almost for sure going to bring some arrogance / drama with him. He's like Dillon Brooks. But Brooks had to work his way up where this guy is already on top, so IDK. We'll see! Either way I don't think he's coming so we're just debating for hypothetical giggles at this point.

I definitely would have preferred this, as would have Altman since he's been saying they needed to get more experienced. As evidenced by the top teams, those with veteran guards tend to do better than those with FR leading them. Not sure what they'd get out of Stokes but getting 30+ points out of Lewis and Garland/Edmead would have been nice, especially with how their needs at PF and C.

I suppose I just didn't see a scenario where they got 2 of those guys. Like you said, they'll probably end up with none, so probably no need for us to debate it too much. haha.

Sounds like Stokes is likely headed to Kansas. Announcement may come later today.

If Stokes wants to be the guy his best bet is Oregon. Just not sure we have the $$

Not to be that guy, but no duh. We've only landed 1 top 150 transfer portal player. Clearly our money is VERY limited.

It is a bummer, but this is new era of college basketball for the Ducks. I don't think we'll land a top 10 recruit ever again.

Still rather Oregon find a true PG but it sure seems like they're planning on Easter or Jasper Johnson playing there given the limited options for PG transfers.

Some of you have better access to recruiting info. It's been pretty quiet the last several days, but the last names I heard where Divine Ugochukwu from Michigan State and Fred Payne from Boston College. I can't find that they have committed anywhere yet, so maybe they are still on the table. Whether it's one of those guys or someone else, I am pretty confident Coach Dana will add someone. He's done a great job in the portal thus far and now that Stokes is no longer an option, maybe there is some NIL funds freed up? It's a starting gig in the Big Ten and a decent team being assembled now. Someone will come.

Pay sites are crickets right now. Basketball recruiting is hard for them to report because DA and staff keep things close to the chest. It sounds like they both visited, but no commitments yet.

Maybe those guys have been waiting for the Stokes decision and now that Dana is free to offer the starting point guard job again, there will be some movement.
