How did they miss out on Ravioli?

Post by dd10snoop28 »

Lanning has had a track record of identifying and bringing in transfers that excelled at Oregon in their short stints here (Nix, Gabriel, Moore).

So the questions is....how did they miss so badly on Dylan Ravioli given that he had more than enough game tape to evaluate his clear short-comings?

Coaching and player development may play a small part of it, but Ravioli is clearly just a bad quarterback in every regard and has no shot at the NFL no matter who his player development coach is.

Nix, Gabriel, and Moore will be in the NFL for a long time.

How did such a significant miss happen, and with more NIL than before too...???

I think one thing the coaches have gone away from is a running QB. Moore is probably more capable than Raiola, but not having a running threat on broken down plays or to keep the RPO alive is often a drive killer.

If Raiola can't run, he's gotta be able to pass better than most. And I have to concur, it's unlikely he can lead an Oregon team to the playoffs. Even with a competent OC.

The bigger question is why is Oregon relying so heavily on transfers instead of developing their own qb

Because Oregon and every other top program is in "win now" mode every season. Look at Miami. I doubt many can name the last homegrown starting QB they've had.

I'm going to push back here just for the sake of argument.

Why don't we just let him be him? What have we got to lose? Construct a game plan that just lets him run around like a madman and throw to whoever is open? In a way, we already saw it at USC.
We have already seen it multiple times in college. When you have the athletic advantage with a strong roster it can work. Hell, it isn't pretty but have we not seen it twice already not that long ago. Not one, but TWO Heismans, and they both did the same thing.
Johnny Manzil and Caleb Williams.
The entire gameplan was to run around like an idiot until someone came open. It only works in college, but it works, and we sure have the roster for it. We have 5*'s backing up 5*'s at reciever/tight end, so just let him be him.

I would sure rather lose with Raiola throwing for 455 yards, 4 touchdowns, 3 interceptions then lose 21-10 because "he wasn't playing within the system".

I got nothing else this year guys, the year is bust anyway, tell him to go out and be Patrick Mahomes then, it can't be worse then it is now. There is nothing left to lose this year.

The problem is he can't run around.

He can, but he will cough up the ball any time he scrambles. That’s a given.

How do you develop QB's when they transfer out due to depth chart?

Million dollar question. Depends on what the school is willing to pay you to sit while you mature/learn, and what your keepers are whispering in your ear what they believe is your worth. Dante is an outlier. I have to believe an incoming player knows their real chances to play coming in. Developing QB’s now seems to be at the behest of lower division, or lower ranked programs, likened to minor leagues. For the upper echelon teams, it’s all about cherry picking from the have not’s.

Low risk, high reward. You pay 6-7 mln/year for a proven, upperclassmen QB, who you don't need to spend years developing and hope he pans out. Its a smart strategy in the current college football environment, given how many 5 star HS qbs don't make an impact on the college level. Sadly, its what the game has become...

The simple but not very satisfying answer just very well may be: it fell in their lap and was easy? Saved a lot of work (evaluating players, bring them in for visits, making offers, waiting on decisions). Maybe mix in a bit of overconfidence or even hubris in their "fix him" abilities?

Don't think it requires much more. All fans (of current top programs) I am sure think their staffs never take the easy route, don't overestimate their talents, and are always knee deep in the grind (this is a staff who apparently didn't even notice their QB taking one stance for run plays and a different one for passing plays).

Yeah, I got the sense that Raiola brought himself in after watching what QBU did for Dante. If memory serves, Lanning was saying he had the job next year only if he won the QB competition. Anyway, we were all pretty high on him after the USC game, so it seems funny to be casting stones at Lanning now.

Raiola isn’t bad measurable talent wise…he’s careless with the ball and makes bad decisions

There’s an “I can fix him” thing that happens with coaches and sometimes they can’t fix him

Moore and Raiola do not handle pressure well. So who does?
