Fall back options
It is nice that the last few years the Ducks have been in it until close to the end with some highly rated recruits but are the coaches putting too much time and effort into the top talent without any emphasis on a fall back option? I think this year will be the same as the last couple where the Ducks whiff on most if not all of the top guys left on the board. Is it possible that the coaches get into a position of not having depth at a certain position a few years down the road and put the team in a bad situation? I am not sure of the talent and depth at all of the positions but I know of course the D-line is a concern. So I am wondering if it would be a better idea to "settle" if you will on a high 3* talent then to not get anyone at all on the D-line. It is important of course if the Ducks want to make it to the next level to land some of the top talent so giving up is out of the question but if it is getting close to the end and things are still in question wouldn't it be nice to have someone to fall back on. This is not meant to be taken as a "sky is falling" thread, because I think we have done well with recruiting this year as well as last year, my concern is having enough depth in certain areas.

I'm still impressed with the possibility of the first ever class without anyone lower than a 3 star (per rivals).

Dude are you serious? Can you give one good reason why we are going to miss on most if not all the guys left? Do you have any reason to support that? Yeah you're right, lets just give up on the guys that are heavy Duck leans (Dargan, Lache, Werner) & lets just completely forget all the guys we are in the final two for (Owa, Heimili, Huff, Lowe, King).gofightingducks wrote:It is nice that the last few years the Ducks have been in it until close to the end with some highly rated recruits but are the coaches putting too much time and effort into the top talent without any emphasis on a fall back option? Good Lord some of you people really need to stay away from recruiting until LOI day.

Personally, I don't think we should settle. If you can, go for the gold. I'm sure Chip has many things in mind in case things don't go well. I don't know, but I also bet that Chip puts the amount of effort needed into everyone he wants. I guess my point is if you have a good shot with a 3*, why spend as much time as you would absolutely need with a 5*?
In guy terms, you can take a 6 to Red Robin, but you have to take a 10 to Portland City Grill. I would also put it in girl terms, but not quite sure how to...

Re: Fall back options
I dont think we settle either. I know we have had a lot of disappointments with the top talent but we still have to go after them in hopes one day we will start landing them. I think getting a good DC would help us but beyond that we have to go after the top talent hard. I also think that Chip Kelly goes after guys on a backup plan. I trust our coaches when it comes to that. History does tell us we will miss on a lot of the guys on the board.. but wow would it be cool if this is the year we land most of them. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Is it Feb 3rd yet?

This made me think of something...GoDucksIn09 wrote: Is it Feb 3rd yet?
Might be wishful thinking, BUT, if Lache does indeed announce that he's a duck on the 27th, the Ducks will have one week - 7 days, to drum up the excitement of getting a top kid nationally and try to parlay that into an extra commit or 2 on the 3rd.
Even better would be if Jefferson, Werner, or any of our many other guys would also commit before the 3rd as well...
In my opinion, we get a few of these guys already. If we can build up some excitement and hype going INTO the 3rd, who knows, something little like that could be enough to tip the scales on a guy like Owa, Heimuli, etc.
Under the right circumstances, we could be in great shape! That all starts w/ Lache on Wednesday though -- keep your fingers crossed its gonna be a long week and a half!...

Wasn't Lache supposed to be a package deal with Travon Reed at one point? I wonder if there is still any chance of that?glazeduck wrote:This made me think of something...GoDucksIn09 wrote: Is it Feb 3rd yet?

Re: Fall back options
You obviously didn't read the whole thing, I said giving up is out of the question, as in it is stupid to give up on the top talent because there is a chance we get them. Like I said my concern is if in fact we do miss out on them do the coaches have a back up plan in order to prevent running into a problem of not having depth at certain positions. I would hate for the coaches to put all of their effort into a handful of players when the odds are stacked against the Ducks without thinking of the possibility of missing out them and getting into a bad situation when they could have maybe landed a slightly less talented player. Read the whole thing before you fly off the handle. Again this is not a sky is falling or the coaches should stop recruiting top talent thread. Some people on this board are so sensitive.dthomas=ddixon wrote:Dude are you serious? Can you give one good reason why we are going to miss on most if not all the guys left? From everything that's been reported lately... This was at one point talked about, but never any sort of official, done deal type thing. Apparently it is was over-reported and in reality it was, at best, a possibility...karlhungis wrote:Wasn't Lache supposed to be a package deal with Travon Reed at one point? To my knowledge he's solid on Auburn and Lache isn't even paying attention to Auburn, so it appears any possibilities of the two being attached at the hip are probably dead...
