Polee commits to SJU?

For an LA kid, Queens, especially the area of St Johns, would probably not be too bad... For a kid from a place such as Eugene, it would be brutal, at least for a while.

His offensive game is probably very limited. If you noticed, all his 30+ highlights were dunks. There were maybe a couple jump shots, but Polee is an athletic freak. Sucks to see him go to SJU, but he wasn't a NEED. John Loyd IMO was more of a need for this upcoming season. Now we just need to add a big body to this team for depth and that's a good start.

Totally. It would have been really sweet to add him to the team but it's not a big loss. What you have to remember is we already have a solid starting cast. We just need some depth so those guys don't have to play 40 minutes a night. Add some quality depth & another shooter or two & this team is looking pretty good.

Yeah for this class, worry about depth. The future classes will be key for Altman though.

As for Queens. St. John's is located within the Jamaica Estates which is a very nice, quiet, and safe area of Queens. The Subway is blocks away from the campus. You can catch the public bus right outside of campus or St. John's runs a free shuttle service to the subway station to all students. To get to MSG in Manhattan its about a 20 min subway ride. Citifield is about 15 min away. I'm not sure you can call any area of NYC boring especially coming from Oregon haha.

Actually I'm from Los Angeles. I spent four years in Eugene and then returned to LA after I graduated. For college, I would much rather go to school in Eugene. I got into a few schools in "cities" (UW-Seattle, Depaul) but wanted to go to school in a college town.

And as for Queens, it is a boring suburb. There is nothing going on around the school. Yes, it is a safe area, but it's kind of like where UCSD is located (though UCSD is in a much more upscale area). La Jolla is a nice, safe suburb, but there is absolutely nothing for college kids to do. For entertainment purposes, they have to go to downtown SD to the gaslamp district (or the "gaslamp quarter" as natives refer to it).

Anyways, best of luck with Polee. He's a good kid and an elite athlete.

To the person who asked why he is a 3 star- right now he's raw, but based on his potential, he should be a 4 star recruit. He has underrated midrange game and has amazing potential as a defender. He needs to improve his ball handling and his outside shot. The good news for SJU's is that he'll most likely stay 4 years to develop his game. I don't know much about SJU's depth but I imagine that he would come off the bench this year and start as a sophomore.

With Polee gone, Oregon can only get size with Nared, but even he's not much of a post player. It seems like the only people available are PGs or shortish SGs with no range.

I don't mean to be too harsh. You might have a great blog. But I saw one post with a bunch of writing errors and then another post with wrong info. You could see where I became a little skeptical, right?

I'm not sure of what writing errors you speak of and the info wasn't wrong just a little early. Dunlap was all set to come to St. John's then a bunch of things happened but yea he's going to be an assistant for the Red Storm.

Saying someone got a 400 in their SATs isn't meaning to be harsh? haha. really? It's whatever but I'm still calling you out for being a little over the top. Anyways everyone is reporting Polee to St. John's now...I set the world on fire with this.

Dunlap was never a done deal, and while he's very likely gonna end up coaching for you guys, that was far from a sure thing when you posted that. It's not even 100% now. It was a legitimate thing to point out.

And the SAT thing was a joke. Don't be so sensitive When I see an internet blog with poor writing reporting something, it is a red flag that the person isn't a credible source. Obviously you are. It was worth mentioning.

Congrats on Polee and Dunlap. You're getting a great coach with integrity in Dunlap btw.

LoL at calling Queens a boring suburb. It's New York *&^%ing City. There is plenty around the campus including this little place called Manhattan. Also the campus is located right on the main street in Jamaica with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. Jamaica Ave, Bell Blvd, and Queens Blvd are all right by the school. Astoria is very close by in addition to Flushing. I just don't see where you are coming from with this nonsense.

I've never been to Oregon so I can't comment on how Eugene is but I'm not trying to compare St. John's to Oregon is any way.

I admitted fault with the Dunlap posting. I was fed some bad info from a very reliable person, it happens. All I can do is say I was wrong which I have.

My sister went to NYU, which is actually in Manhattan. Manhattan is pretty awesome as there's tons of stuff going on relatively close to campus. Queens is roughly ~15 miles from Manhattan. I wouldn't really call it that close (i.e. can take a taxi there at a reasonable rate). Queens is not known for its bustling nightlife. I have been to Queens but not to the SJ campus. The area is fine, I'm just saying it's not the most desirable place for a college student. Much like comparing USC to UCLA. There is tons of stuff going on in Westwood (UCLA), while USC is in a more run down, though improving, part of Los Angeles. Obviously Queens is much safer than South Central (the area around USC), but neither area really caters to college students, nor is known for having great nightlife.

Anyways, best of luck with Polee and Lavin. My mom went to UCLA and I've met Lavin on multiple locations in LA (grew up a UCLA fan) and even in Eugene while he worked some games as a broadcaster. He's a great guy, but I question his ability to take a program to a championship level. He had virtually unlimited resources and unbelievable prestige at UCLA and consistently failed to meet expectations. I realize that his record looks impressive, but every year UCLA has tons of kids in the area practically begging for a scholarship. UCLA on the West Coast is on the same level as UNC back East. Historically, UCLA is the greatest basketball program of all time. Once Jim Harrick's recruits graduated, Lavin struggled (by UCLA standards) and failed to make it past the sweet 16. Check out what Ben Howland has done in UCLA by comparison to see what a good coach can do at an elite program.

I would expect St. Johns to make the tournament under Lavin, but don't expect him to have the same success that he had at UCLA. I feel like St. Johns fans may have unrealistic expectations about their program, which is why I think that Lavin may have been better off taking the NC State job when he was offered it back in 2006.

If SJ fans have realistic expectations of Lavin, then you'll love him. He is a great salesman, interacts well with boosters, and is a fantastic recruiter. Bringing in Dunlap should help Lavin from an x's and o's standpoint (as this tends to be his biggest weakness).

Well, the perception is that Dunlap is a good x's and o's coach. Why else would Oregon have brought him in to assist Ernie (who in many respects is very similar to Lavin)? Some people around the program believe that while Dunlap may have helped in practice, his contributions were largely ignored when it came to game time. For anyone who watched last year's team, that appears to be an accurate assessment.

I only read it once, but I saw a run-on sentence, some missed commas, stuff like that. It wasn't terrible, and obviously the SAT thing was a joke. It wasn't like it was written by someone who was obviously an idiot. But it wouldn't have appeared on a major site like SI or ESPN without some changes. (By the way, I just looked at it and either it was edited or I originally thought I saw something that wasn't there. If the latter is the case, my bad.)

This little spat has gone on more than it needed to. Look, I only mentioned those things because they were reason for some skepticism about a website (not a blog) that I'd never heard of. You were right. Good luck and congrats.
