from Banning, Ca... Ducks interested? I came across this kid while researching Peniel Jean, the Palm Beach, Fla. DB who is looking for interest from the Ducks.

"Smith has since been rated the number three (Class of 2010) cornerback prospect in the nation by the ULT 100 behind Peniel Jean of Palm Beach Florida and Khiry McQuay of Hillsborough Florida."
In a press release from the Elite 100 staff Smith is described as "One of the most explosive football players around, makes great plays all over the field".

Here's video of Smith returning a punt, plus an end-zone INT.

Looking at this basketball video, he's got good hops, too!

Plus, he can dunk... Not bad for a 5'11 kid.

From an Oct. 20, 2008 article by Scout, written by Brandon Huffman:
"Banning (Calif.) athlete Derron Smith is one of the more versatile prospects in the class of 2010 from the Golden State.
Smith has rushed for 562 yards on 65 carries and scored four touchdowns and thrown six touchdowns on 42-of-81 passing for 796 yards.
Defensively, he has 42 tackles and a pick and is averaging almost 34 yards a punt (return)."

Thanks Wounded. You are a real treasure around here and I'd like to tell you that I appreciate all the information that you are able to find for us.
Derron Smith sounds promising. The fact that he's on the West Coast should really help our chances if indeed the Duck coaches are interested. Who knows though, I've always wondered what goes through some of the recruits heads who don't even give Oregon a look. Not saying that this will turnout this way, but hearing all these 2010 recruits just harkens back to past years. It's always fun to speculate on players in the "Next" class. Like last year I'm sure some of us did with players like Terdema Ussery, Travis Brown, Corey Adams, Devon Kennard, Emory Blake, etc. - who were players we'd heard had interest in Oregon, or were players who as fans we had really wanted. Then as the season comes rolling around and the recruiting information gradually starts to pick up, we later find out that either the coaches aren't interested in the recruits or that the recruits aren't interested in Oregon for whatever reason. This sounds like one of those cases and all we can do is wait and see what we have in store for us. I guess that's what makes recruiting so fun to follow.
I've never heard of the ULT 100 before, but if it's anything legit it sounds like Derron Smith will be a very highly rated recruit next year. Oregon sounds like they have an early interest. Let's hope it ends up being mutual on both sides as the season progresses and that Smith's star keeps on rising. He was defensive MVP of that camp so that has to say something.

Re: Derron Smith, 2010 DB/QB
Wounded, this kid's accomplishments were well covered in the regional news papers. Banning is "way out" in the desert but they seem to have very good teams from time to time. If he has a serious interest in Oregon I'll attend one of his games next year and report.
USC may be ovestocked but I would be very surprised if UCLA doesn't make a run for him. Also he is a desert guy so ASU and UA might seem like home. The 10 freeway east is a straight shot to ASU, I would guess 4 - 4.5 hours and west to UCLA, about 2 hours. The family and friends pressures might keep him near by.
