Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
Thanks for the comments on the highlights guys. He looked pretty good on film, and moved decently for a guy his size.

Guess that means the Green de-commit rumors are likely proving true.

The way this lines up, it certainly looks as though Green got moved to make room for Herbert.Duck24 wrote:Guess that means the Green de-commit rumors are likely proving true.

I kid
On a serious note, here's his career stats (5 games):
2015 - Compl. Percentage - 66.1% / TD's 14 - INT 2 / Passing yards 1,212 - Games played 4
2014 - Compl. Percentage - 72 % / TDs 5 - INT 0 / Passing yards 298 - Games played 1 and a quarter?(I think he got injured at the beginning of his 2nd start)
Any non-believers out there? Do you think anyone on the staff is upset over losing Seth Green:) I believe that he might be the single best "get" in this recruiting class.

Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
Well, I don't really have a comment on his ability, since I've never seen him play in person. It's normal for people not to get too excited when a 2 star with no other serious offers commits. Obviously they (coaches) like what they see. It's also apparent that the Green rumors of him being told he can play TE or look elsewhere are true. Crazy! Talk about stock dropping. He'll probably end up back in Minnesota and they will brag they flipped a Duck commit.srsmiley007 wrote:You better not jinx it:)StevensTechU wrote:Not a Chris Harper/Damion Hobbs/Ty Griffin/Daryle Hawkins (as a QB) fan?dthomas=ddixon wrote:Like others have touched on, it feels like the first QB we've gotten in awhile that is actually a great passer and not simply an athletic talent that we hope to develop. Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
Herbert did get an offer from Nevada yesterday but I can certainly see how it looks bad he had no other Power Conference scholarship offer. The problem with assessing Herbert's recruitment in comparison to other top QBs is he never got a chance to play his JR year, which is when many QBs start getting looked at by colleges. His injury made him fall off the radar for many colleges and is only now being rediscovered. Many coaches and trainers in the state think he would easily be in double digit FBS offers had he played all of last season and led Sheldon deep into the playoffs.

Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
i don't have any knowledge on assessing QBs like you do. But i will say i was not expecting to be so impressed with his tape. He was accurate ripping the ball and with the touch passes, from so many different throwing positions.srsmiley007 wrote:I reviewed the film and don't agree at all. These are inertia movements and with the exception of having 2 or 3 defenders dropped on him doesn't throw off his back foot. I'm not sure if you've coached or played before but your assessment isn't accurate.lukeyrid13 wrote:He looks pretty raw just like terry wilson. Yes, he does a great job of scrambling and.extending plays but his feet are always moving; in a negative way. He rarely sets and plants and is often dancing in the pocket and throws off his back foot. He has really good touch but having pocket presence and zip is what.sets you apart in college.
He has potential certainly but I would be surprised if he saw the field in the next few years. His size and skill set could pay dividends down the road though.
They don't have a single read offense so inertia movements assist with mobility and designed to keep the body aligned with the routes as he groes through progressions. When he has single read throws (not many per the film) he doesn't have happy feet. Don't confuse happy feet with inertia movements. With exception to the route tree, their passing offense is similiar to ours and he sets before he throws every time. For a kid to be at 65% completions with an Oline that is sieve is impressive. He has a cannon arm that is extremely accurate. He makes throws to the appropriate shoulder which is very unique for this level of football. Watch the film again, it's extremely impressive. His skill is beyond Terry Wilson's and the types of throws he makes (under duress), reads and pocket awareness is unique. Watch how many routes are predetermined and how many are 3 or 4 in progression. Once your done with that, go to Terry Wilsons film. Huge difference. This is another diamond in the rough (like MM). This is the first QB I've seen in their recruiting since MM that I've liked. TJ has a decent deep ball but long delivery. He didn't appear to have accuracy I'm seeing from this kid though. It's impressive. Almost all of the throws he makes can only be caught by his receiver.
FYI - There's a reason we dumped Green in favor of this unranked kid. The points shared above are the reason. Had he played more than 3-4 games last year before getting injured he would've already been in the fold. At an Oregon HS, without camp exposure, he isn't going to get more than 2-3 stars. He was completely off the radar screen of all the serious players. This kid is a winner, a top pitcher for the state champion Irish, he bypassed camp exposure to support his team in their pursuit of a championship. He plays Basketball as well and won the state championship as a sophomore (missed last season due to football injury). This kid has a winning mindset and appears to be great at almost any sport. This is what you need. This is what we need.

RG's Steve Mims Friday night tweet: @SteveMims_RG: Justin Herbert's 1st quarter: 3 TD passes, 1 TD run, 3-4 on PATs, 52-yard punt. 27-0 Irish over South.
Can he punt for us tomorrow?

QB's committed since Mariota.dthomas=ddixon wrote:Love this pickup. I also love that he's a Eugene kid.

I don't disagree that we've missed on some guys, but I would I disagree on your reasoning. Also, there have been a ridiculous amount of high end QB's that we recruited and didn't get who are now starting or have started at other schools. I would say those misses are the ones that have caused us the most issue.
Now on Herbert, I'm impressed. He has a big arm, you can see it in the ease of the throwing motion. He also has big hands, a big plus! The way he runs reminds me of Cardale Jones, but maybe with a little more top end speed.

Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
This is a BIG "wait and see" recruit. The kid has skills, is a winner and the fact that he's local makes him popular with most fans. My biggest question is about the strength of competition he's faced. Oregon high schools aren't loaded with talent like many recruits from Texas, California, Florida, etc. Football isn't the biggest focus of kids lives like it is in many areas of the south. Also, the population base isn't as big as many other areas with bigger leagues.
I recall an excellent Sheldon team playing a top Washington team (Skyline) a few years back and losing 21-0. The vaunted Irish offense was completely shut down.
I'm not trying to be negative about the kid. I'd like to see him do well, too. I just look at the facts. Seth Green is a good example. The kid did really well at QB in Minnesota, but has really struggled in Texas.
My take is "we'll see".

Justin Herbert COMMITS!
That's true SuperDuck, but this kid has tangibles that fit. If the 95 mph fastball claim is true, he has a serious arm. He has size and as decent speed. Those are known and gives him a huge leg up on at the D-1 level over a what one might expect from a typical Oregon HS QB that plays and wins with heart and craftiness. It looks like this kid might have both heart and measurables. I read where he's won pretty big in several sports and gave up camp invites to do so. If the kid punts, kicks, plays bball and baseball decently, he has coordination too.SuperDuck wrote:This is a BIG "wait and see" recruit. I realize it's never a sure bet and we should temper excitement because moving from average competition in HS to big-time D1 is a huge jump and so many can't make the leap, but this kid seems to really line up well for success.. He even runs a read option at his HS - bonus.

Re: Justin Herbert COMMITS!
Totally agree, I like the look of the kid but you have to take his on-field success with a grain of salt because Oregon high school football is generally so weak. Like people were getting excited about how well he was beating South Eugene, but South Eugene football is BAD. I've got a good feeling about Herbert, I really do, but I'm not banking on him being our next big thing until I see evidence that his success isn't just a product of lackluster competition.SuperDuck wrote:This is a BIG "wait and see" recruit. In fairness, there is no sure thing. In life or football. But of all the options, recruits, etc. this is by far the best qb I've seen them recruit(at this stage). This isn't the typical Sheldon team with a dominant line and elite receivers. I live in SEC country and see a fair amount of hs football. I can't remember the last time I've seen on film or in person a QB throw 40 yard strikes in heavy traffic falling backward with 2 kids draped on him. Look at the film this year of other QB's or even Terry Wilson. They make good throws, there fast, but check out progressions and throws under duress. TW makes good throws but notice how none of them are in heavy traffic or with bodies draped on him. Then watch JH.
We are 3-2 and need to have some hope about the future of duck football. This recruit is the first in some time that a.) confirms Frost and MH are able to maintain the torch and b.) give me confidence that our offense can reach similar heights in the near future. I wasn't completely sold on Travis or any of our other QBs/recruits but this shows some promise.
