Local product Justin Herbert, a 6'6, 220 lb quarterback with a reported 95 mph fastball, committed to the Ducks tonight. This is a HUUUUUGE boon to the future of the offense, as he's already an incredibly proficient passer. Sheldon's offense is so similar to the Ducks that you can pretty much expect him to come in ahead of the curve.

Herbert's flying well under the radar. In his junior campaign, he began the year very well (there's a highlight on Hudl of him playing some defense and picking up now the current Syracuse QB), but broke his leg in the 3rd game of the season. He rehabbed, helped pitch Sheldon to a state title in baseball, and has had an exceptional start to his senior year. Check out one of his games from this year against the best team in the state:

I watched all Videos and this guy can play. If he enrolls early he might give TJ and whoever else is competing for the Starting job.

He looks pretty raw just like terry wilson. Yes, he does a great job of scrambling and.extending plays but his feet are always moving; in a negative way. He rarely sets and plants and is often dancing in the pocket and throws off his back foot. He has really good touch but having pocket presence and zip is what.sets you apart in college.

He has potential certainly but I would be surprised if he saw the field in the next few years. His size and skill set could pay dividends down the road though.

I don't have an answer, but logic says there has to be a chance. He told 247sports he's considering foregoing his senior season of baseball to enroll early, so that would certainly dampen that possibility.

Have you read any articles? He is thinking of coming in December to the Ducks. The only thing that would hold him back was his commitment to his baseball teammates. He said his preference is December. He says, his team knows he is committed to football and not baseball.

I reviewed the film and don't agree at all. These are inertia movements and with the exception of having 2 or 3 defenders dropped on him doesn't throw off his back foot. I'm not sure if you've coached or played before but your assessment isn't accurate.

They don't have a single read offense so inertia movements assist with mobility and designed to keep the body aligned with the routes as he groes through progressions. When he has single read throws (not many per the film) he doesn't have happy feet. Don't confuse happy feet with inertia movements. With exception to the route tree, their passing offense is similiar to ours and he sets before he throws every time. For a kid to be at 65% completions with an Oline that is sieve is impressive. He has a cannon arm that is extremely accurate. He makes throws to the appropriate shoulder which is very unique for this level of football. Watch the film again, it's extremely impressive. His skill is beyond Terry Wilson's and the types of throws he makes (under duress), reads and pocket awareness is unique. Watch how many routes are predetermined and how many are 3 or 4 in progression. Once your done with that, go to Terry Wilsons film. Huge difference. This is another diamond in the rough (like MM). This is the first QB I've seen in their recruiting since MM that I've liked. TJ has a decent deep ball but long delivery. He didn't appear to have accuracy I'm seeing from this kid though. It's impressive. Almost all of the throws he makes can only be caught by his receiver.

FYI - There's a reason we dumped Green in favor of this unranked kid. The points shared above are the reason. Had he played more than 3-4 games last year before getting injured he would've already been in the fold. At an Oregon HS, without camp exposure, he isn't going to get more than 2-3 stars. He was completely off the radar screen of all the serious players. This kid is a winner, a top pitcher for the state champion Irish, he bypassed camp exposure to support his team in their pursuit of a championship. He plays Basketball as well and won the state championship as a sophomore (missed last season due to football injury). This kid has a winning mindset and appears to be great at almost any sport. This is what you need. This is what we need.

srsmiley007-- you hit two points that I've thought over and over. First, that he's throwing not just at a body but to the right spot in order to allow the receiver to keep stride and get yards after the catch. It's surprisingly rare among even QBs with national offer lists, as they're want to just rifle the ball at the numbers instead of putting it in the best spot. Second, that he continually puts the ball in places where only the receiver can get it. He's not out there tossing jump balls, he's throwing passes where his receiver gets it or nobody gets it. This isn't the case with Wilson and it reeeaaally wasn't the case with Green. It's a next-level skill set that becomes more and more necessary as the competition increases.

The two things I would add that are super impressive to me are 1) velocity and accuracy when throwing on the move are top-notch, and incredibly necessary in the Oregon offense, and) smart, poised reaction to pressure. As the old Sam Rutigliano quotation goes, quarterbacks are like bags of tea: you don't know what you have until you put it in hot water.

I love this, at first I thought a fallback because of missing out again on the coaches first choices and the struggles of Seth Green but after watching video and reading reviews this seems to be a huge get for the Ducks. It's also cool to get a hometown kid. He has many intangibles that can't always be taught. Might be a battle between him and Jonsen next season since Morgan doesn't seem to be progressing. Always cool to get a kid who is not on everyone's radar who has a ton of upside.

I am very excited about this get and I didn't see "raw" either. His skillset is in great alignment with our scheme.

Love this pickup. Like others have touched on, it feels like the first QB we've gotten in awhile that is actually a great passer and not simply an athletic talent that we hope to develop. So far that hasn't worked out too well and the main reason we are in the QB situation we are at the moment.

I also love that he's a Eugene kid.
