Indiana's coordinators at 36 and 40, and were first time play callers under Cignetti, albeit for a season or two at JMU prior to Indiana. Football has evolved, and that has shown in the NFL and college football. I don't want to go hire old veteran coaches. Look at the NFL coaches that are in the playoffs. I believe the oldest HC in the NFC is 46 this year. The Ducks have improved every year, and made it further in the playoffs than last year. The last 3 years they have only lost to title game participants. There's really just no reason to overreact to a couple of games that snowballed out of control against 2 teams that were the best teams in the NCAA on those given years. Lanning will learn from it and continue to improve.
I am open to someone other than Mehringer, but I also have no idea how he'll do at OC. I'm going to trust Lanning, who has made great hires to this point to make the right decision. I'm also not going to judge him on his brief tenure as the play caller for a Rutgers team devoid of talent 10 years ago, when he was 29 and the youngest play caller in the Power 5. It's been 10 years. He may have learned a thing or two over that time.

First time play caller? He called plays while being OC on a horrific Rutgers team.

That said, muzzling Dante all game, rather than letting him sling it before it was 3rd and forever…. That was unforgivable. They were protecting him like overbearing parents.
Down 30 and more concerned about his level of zen than scoring points.

Muzzling Dante.....the first play of the game he had a #11 wide open for a TD and elected to throw a pick 6.
I figured first few throws would be scripted and first throw was also prescribed to Benson on the outside. Maybe I’m wrong.

I’m also concerned about Mehringer being out OC. Not much experience and every time I hear him talk, I’m unimpressed.
But obviously if he becomes our Oc, Dan sees enough in him to trust him to lead our offense. Dan will outside hire if he felt otherwise.

I'm also concerned about how good he'll be at developing QBs. Dilly and Stein were very good at that. I wonder if Lanning might bring in a QB coach?

If this turns out to be Stein 2.0 then I'm calling it the Meh offense.

I wondered this as well. I did a little digging and Mehringer was a QB in college and has coached the position at a couple stops.
I still like the idea of an OC and then a dedicated QB coach though. Perfect world we get a QB whisperer who helps Dante really take the next step.

Just for reference, the players are very excited about Mehringer.

I’m not one to rely on player excitement for the right hire…..we’ve seen plenty of times where the coach the players wanted turned out to be a bad hire. This should be a Lanning decision, not a players’ decision. Not saying the players are having any say in it but judging by what the players want isn’t always the best indicator if it’s a quality hire or not.

Don't blame Dante. Benson ran a terrible route. Just a big old lazy curve out. DB had inside leverage and had seen that play many times on video and was already coming forward. Not even a fake by Benson to freeze the DB for a millisecond. That 6 was on Benson. Re-watch that play and tell me I'm wrong.

I blame Stein cuz I also believe we were being wayyy too cautious not to make a mistake, Which I understand, but at the same time you gotta take some risks and shots to beat a team like Indiana.

Read the post again. I said they are excited about the promotion of Mehringer.
I didn't say they pushed for him or recommended him.

Welp, just gonna hope we see an improved offense, if our offense doesn’t improve next season then I’ll be very disappointed and it’ll feel like a real wasted opportunity.
