For any coach we hired, I would hope they would keep Payne on for his recruiting ties.

Id rather go after Gillespie. He certainly has baggage but he is a heck of a recruiter and as long as his alcohol rehab worked I think he could be a good coach at Oregon. He is a workaholic and could be a good fit.

Thats his records over his last 6 years coaching at Utep, Texas A&M and Kentucky.

He is 50 years old so he probably has 10-15 years left in coaching

This is kind of scairy and im sure would get alot of trolls ripping on us for the hire but if he has cleaned himself up the guy can coach.

On August 27, 2009, Gillispie was arrested at 2:45 AM in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky for driving under the influence.[34] A passenger in the 2009 Mercedes Benz C300, Charles O'Connor, was arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication.[35]

According to the police report, an officer saw the vehicle swerving and stopped the driver. The officers who were at the scene smelled a strong odor of alcohol, with Gillispie's eyes being red and glassy, with his speech slurred. When asked about his proof of insurance, Gillispie stated that it was in a golf bag in his trunk. He then refused a blood test and a breathalyzer on the scene and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Franklin County jail.[34][35]

Gillispie pleaded not guilty.[35] A judge had scheduled a trial for February 10, 2010 in the case.[36] However, on November 2, 2009, Gillispie changed his plea to guilty under a plea agreement.[37] He was fined $1,028 and must complete an alcohol and drug education course before his Kentucky driver's license can be renewed.[37] He has had two prior DUI arrests, the first in 1999 when he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and improper use of a lane in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving. He was arrested again in 2003 in his first year at the University of Texas at El Paso on suspicion of drunken driving, although it was later dismissed based on a lack of evidence.[35]

In September 2009, it was reported that Gillispie has entered an alcohol rehabilitation program and has checked himself in to the John Lucas After Care Program in Houston.[38][39]

I'm surprised he hasn't been talked about more but I think that it has to do with his past personal problems and not his coaching abilities. If he has his problems fixed and under control, then he would be an excellent hire. I have a feeling though that Kilkenny isn't even going to consider him. Right now, Kilkenny would be smart to consider any one at this point.

IMO with all the recent problems on campus with the football players, I think that we need to bring in a coach that is clean, at least cleaner than that and that should not be so hard. One DUI is a major offense, but THREE? I don't care how good of a coach you are, you have to set a good example to your players through your actions off the court, too. After reading the above, would I want my son to play under him? NO WAY! :o

Gillespie has 1 DUII conviction... Another was dropped for lack of evidence, while charges on the third were reduced to non-DUII...

I guess I may have a different take on this.

If BG has completed both those programs successfully, and made actually the changes in his personal life some are reporting, he may well be an excellent addition to this program.

Think about it... A guy who has been to the top, fallen hard, and made a legitimate turn-around, could be an excellent mentor for the young men who are struggling to make the right decisions for their futures.

This school has been big on second chances.

I'd be fine with Dunlap, Johnson, or Gillespie. I could care less about the big name, I just want someone who's smart and I feel like should be trusted with our program. Those three guys are the ones I'm most confident about.

Of those 3, Gillespie is the most proven quantity as a college basketball coach... He has done it at BCS programs, and done it (The coaching end, anyway.) well.

Dunlap would probably be my second choice, with Avery 3rd.

It would be interesting to see what Dunlap can do at the helm (Especially without Ernie in his back pocket)... It seems like I read that the players were getting along with him pretty well, earlier in the season.

Not sure that he even has a choice, I believe he was the only assistant under contract for next year.

yea he has choice, he can leave if another school like kentucky wants him. and it's been said that they want him (wanted him last year too). so him deciding to stay is big for us.

What about Payne as the next HC? We all know he can recruit, maybe he can coach as well or is he even interested in being a HC. I find it interesting that he hasn't been mentioned before, unless I have missed something and he doesn't want to be a HC. He can recruit, the players love him and he has been loyal.

buckmarkduck wrote:On his twitter today, Canzano said that UO is considering Avery Johnson. Hmm whats with the love for ex-NBA coaches? He may do good, but generally NBA coaches don't succeed at the NCAA level. That's why I would rather us get an excellent college assistant rather than a re-tread NBA coach.

I think you have that backwards. Generally college coaches don't succeed at the NBA level. NBA coaches who have gone to college have largely been phenomenal.

I like Avery Johnson, and I think it would be a great hire. That said, I'm surprised most of the people here like it. A lot of folks here spoke out against PJ because of his age, assuming he'd retire in 5-6 years. IMO, Avery Johnson would be a spectacular hire for a couple seasons, before he jumps back to the NBA, which he no doubt would.

No he's only gone if we don't give him the job. He's waiting on us to get an HC.

To make the best comparison I can think of, this would be like hiring Scott Frost to succeed Chip Kelly. Could we do it? Well, sure. Would we? Not in a million years.
