In one of the cases in particular he supposedly was "Advising" one of his HS sr. clients and he knew that the kid was not a solid D-1 recruit, so he lied and said that his client had an offer from Miami, which was false, because he thought that if other schools saw that Miami had offered him that maybe some other D-1 schools would take a second or even possibly a first look at his client. Now it is a pretty crafty and honorable thing to want your client to get in to a big name school, but what's not honorable is lying and bending the rules to accomadate your client.
Do you have any links about this?

If true, and honestly, I think it's a pretty big if unless Butler flat out admitted it, I really don't see it as that big of a deal. Yeah, it's not good to lie. But, there are degrees of lies. This is the equivalent of lying on a resume for a job. Something that, according to studies, a massive amount of people do. Not what I feel is justification to trash a persons entire character over. You probably have a friend or relative that once lied on a resume. Doesn't mean they are deserving of the types of comments being thrown Butlers way.

Besides, I don't even buy that as being the reason. People left and right are calling Butler every name in the book. You're the first person I've seen who has referenced anything about previously lying about who gave offers. Sounds more like an excuse in a witch trial to me.

Butler did not admit that. It was in the same NY times article making it sound like they dug it up in investigating the story.

One of the other stories I was reading, or maybe the same NY times one had a pretty funny quote I thought. Either a Scout or Rivals head guy was quoted as saying he thought it wasn't right that Butler was charging for info on a recruit. How's that for a pot calling the kettle black?

An article that put Butler in a better light said he was charging $10 a month for this site for a long time as one of the few sources of income from working with these kids. It wasn't like he just started this when BB didn't commit at or right before signing day, which would really look bad, and I think was the impression most people got.

A final note: I don't get the impression Butler does all this just for charity. Not many people would. So at some point he has to do some things to build his "business", i.e. charge for site and recruit info. It's like when the oxygen mask drops in an airplane. You put yours on first, then anyone else you can help. If you don't, you may not be able to help anyone. Same thing in business. If you can't afford to run your business, you will have no business.

I think you hit the nail on the head. People have a natural reaction to the idea of other people making money off of their interest in something. It's especially clear when the interest comes first and then a charge is instituted after.

But, rivals and scout have been doing it for years for millions of dollars. They can spin it however they want as a service to the recruits. But, you don't see older professionals sitting by while a third party makes millions off of their talent. The fact is, these kids simply don't have the ability to represent themselves due to their age and dependency on parents. It goes all the way up to the colleges. They sell it as a service to offer these kids an education. The education is good, yes. But, the colleges are making hundreds of millions off of the athletic talent of these students. By far dwarfing the cost of the education they are getting.

Anyway, I digress. Sorry. Brown and Butler are ok by me (as far as I can tell by the info available). :)

I think we should feel proud of our recruiting class of 2009 and consider Bryce gone. gone. gone. Do we really want Butler around to influence our other players? I don't think so.

Do you really believe that Butler would be around "influencing players" if Brown went to Oregon?

Dude, are you serious? I'm sure coaches will let Butler hang out in the locker room & at team meetings, probably bring him on as an Assistant Coach.....NOT. This college football, mentors don't follow the kids to the schools they choose. Never happened before, not gonna happen now.
