I believe that abortion should be a choice that's available but it's also, in most cases, an elective procedure that a person should have to pay for themselves with their own money or through a private insurance policy. Making elective pregnancies off-limits for payment by any government source would take away the main source of debate over the issue as well.
People should really have to think about the consequences of having unprotected sex and not rely on the government to correct it. You got yourself into the situation, you should have to deal with it yourself since it's a personal, not governmental, matter.
The rhetoric being fed to people is that Planned Parenthood uses Federal funds to pay for abortions and that is absolutely 110% NOT TRUE. I agree that the individual/individuals (yes, men should be held accountable for the pregnancy too) need to find the funds on their own & not have the government pay for it.
I would like to see birth control free for anybody who wants it. Assuming people are going to be abstinent is naive at best, especially teens. Why not educate them that abstinence is best but give them the tools to prevention? Just my opinion of course, but I'll never understand why people keep burying their heads in the sand. Face it head on!
So I have to pay for other people having sex? Abstinence is seriously not that hard. It's called self-control. I've practiced it to this day and I'm 22. I've also been with my girlfriend for 10 months. If both parties are serious on abstinence, it's very doable. Unfortunately, our world is so sexually immoral and have spurned God and His moral laws. If no one had sex outside of marriage, the world would be perfect sexually! Little to no diseases, no hurt or heartbreak. Beyond ideal. But you are right mfr, that's probably not going to happen. But I still don't see why we shouldn't aim for perfection. And if parents and schools strongly taught abstinence as the first choice, you'd see pregnancies drop tremendously.
And again, I'm not paying for anyone to have sex. If they want to have sex, they need to pay for their actions and buy their own birth control pills. If you can't afford it, then don't do it. Lol really not that hard.
Should we then teach how to do drugs and cope with it? This world is all about tolerance and supporting it, instead of nipping the problem in the bud.
Even if you don't agree with abstinence, I don't see how you think my tax dollars should be going to a 16 year old high school drop outs who work at taco bell and has no responsibilities. I've worked my butt off my whole life, putting siding on houses for two years, studying 5 years at college, paying off debts, yet I should be paying for someone who is lazy and adds nothing to this world? Ridiculous.
My 2 cents.
I never said you would pay for it or the government for that matter. It's a dream of mine to have it free or at least very close to free. There was a day, not long ago, that my insurance company would cover Viagra but not birth control and bc was not cheap. It would be nice to have the pharmaceutical companies take less profit off of birth control for the social good (like with polio, flu vaccines, etc.). Like I said, just on my wish list.
Lazy? Adds nothing to this world? Who says birth control is only used by 16 year olds that work at Taco Bell? Interesting choice of words when describing someone that could use assistance. Be careful because someday you may need some help & will thank your lucky stars that program is there for you. There are many people that work their butts off & still need some help, especially with health insurance.
I'd say they add to the world & should not be considered gum on your shoe because they do.
It would be wonderful if abstinence was practiced first, but many married people might actually want to have a relationship with their spouse and ultimately have children down the road, so birth control is their best option and if it was reasonably priced, it may not be the typical choice of either paying for gas or birth control. That is a real life reality of the average American.
The way you are talking about birth control out, you are making it out to be that I'm the gum on the government's shoe. And yes, someone who smokes pot all day, sleeps around with multiple people, has no drive for school or college adds nothing to society. Because you are basically I should be bailing out those who do wrong and make bad decisions despite having every opportunity as me to have a real job and do something with their lives.
And have you gone to high school these days? Generalizing those who would use birth control to the uneducated 16 year old is seriously not too far off. And you said you'd like to see birth control to be free for everyone. Guess what, that implies people like me paying for it. So try to sugar coat around it, but nothing is free. Anytime someone says it is free. It means that people like me now have to pay for debts and for other people's mistakes.
Mfr, I honestly don't see how you could justify giving out birth control freely. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I frankly couldn't disagree more. Polio, flu vaccines, etc., those are all health issues outside of our control. Having sex is not inevitable, we have a choice. Again, I say, instead of addressing the real problem, we are trying suppress the outcomes from the problem.
Everything should be donation-based and private. If people want to donate to planned-parenthood and give birth control to everyone, go ahead!! That's perfectly fine. I'd rather give my money to people starving in different countries or being murdered for their religious beliefs. I want to support those who truly have NO choice or opportunity in life, not to those who have all the opportunities in the world. I shouldn't be forced to give my money to support abortions, condoms, birth control, etc.
And actually, mfr, if I ever made the wrong decision to have sex and have a baby, no, I wouldn't use any government help. I'd have the child, stick with that woman, and raise the baby. Even if I make a wrong choice, I still have the decency to make things right. Regardless of my financial stance. People have overcome much worse in life, I'm pretty sure I could work my butt off even with a minimum wage job and still make things work.
My American generation is so spoiled, lazy, and immoral. You probably don't see it as well, because you don't go to high school and college in these times. Instead of rewarding the lazy and immoral, why not reward the hard workers and those who persevere?
They already tried this back with the Pilgrims, socialism. Everyone gets equal distribution of food. At first, everyone worked hard and everything was going well. But some people started getting lazy, yet at the end of the day they got the same as everyone else. After a few months, half of the people decided to stop working entirely, because work or not, they'd receive the same food income. Uhoh, but what happens when people stop working? Less food gets produced, people starve, and to put it simply, people died and this failed miserably. Instead of giving people birth control to people, how about helping them find jobs to pay for their own.

I would gladly give a few tax dollars to help a kid or two find a job to make some money.
