Tubby Smith isn't considered to be a good recruiter. That's what got him pushed out the door at UK. He's a great coach and his teams will always play shut down defense but his shortcoming is recruiting.

He had a good bit of talent with the 'cats but not as much as other coaches (Pitino, Calapari, etc) have been able to pull in.

Is Calapari really a great recruiter or just a great cheater? Everywhere he has been his best player has ended up bringing sanctions to the University.

Honestly, just about any coach out there would be better than what we have seen from Kent lately.

I would actually take one of those assistant coaches from Duke now. Even with no head coaching experience, I bet they could devise a better gameplan and teach the players better fundamentals.

I'm not saying I wouldn't love to see Tubby coaching the Ducks, I'm just pointing out that recruiting isn't his strong suit. One thing is for sure however, and that's that Tubby will get every ounce of ability out of the players on his roster.

Strongly, strongly disagree about Steve Lavin. There's a reason he hasn't left broadcasting since UCLA dumped him. The wheels had completely fallen off the wagon by the end of his tenure, and during his regime, he was the Ernie Kent of the Pac-10: the coach the other 9 schools in the conference never wanted to leave. I don't know if time has merely taken off some of the stank of his UCLA days or what, but he's not even on Oregon's radar. Nor should he be.

And Tim Floyd is absolutely unhirable at this point. Good coach, but dumb decisions have destroyed his college career.

Right now I think we are going to go after someone like Bill Grier at San Diego or a high-level assistant coach from a big-time program, such as Duke. Actually, I would be happy with the women's basketball coach at LCC. He seems like he knows how to win a home game.

Former Blazer, Terry Porter?

Porter coached the Milwaukee Bucks, and left the Suns on Feb. 16, 2009...

Porter only sports a .460 career average, but that is with the NBA, rather than college kids.

If he could do for Duck basketball what Pete Carroll did for USC football, it might be worth a shot.

Porter may enjoy coming back to the Oregon area. He made a serious attempt to purchase the Blazers in '06, when Paul Allen briefly had them on the market.

I would say give him a shot and see how he does in recruiting. He may actually find that he's a better college coach than NBA coach.

Not many exciting names on that list. I'm just not sure that a coach at Whichita State or Northern Iowa will turn around our program.

thats a pretty good list.. watched the northern iowa team play on tv
and they play hard. he's a young guy. ive watched baylor a couple of
times and they are very well coached. he's also a good recruiter.
turgeon is suspect to me. not sure how i feel about him. who ever we
get is going to have get the team to buy into his system. the current team
just wont buy into ernies ever changing style.

I actually think Gregg Marshall could be a nice pick up. He was awesome at Winthrop. But I really hope we can get a bigger name coach, otherwise I just don't see a big improvement to this team.

Here's a name that's been quietly flying under the radar, but is a hot commodity...

Steve Alford at New Mexico. He's 26-3 this season and 12-2 in the Mountain West.

That guy is a student of the Bobby Knight school of basketball and has been on a roll the past couple seasons.

I'd hope that Mike Bellotti has him on his list.

Yeah, he would be interesting. He has a good thing going at New Mexico, but I think that Oregon would be a step up even though the pac-10 is down this season.

Names don't make players better, coaching makes players better.
