Doesn't change the fact that he's 6-1 and marginally athletic for Pac 10 standards.
distantobserver wrote:In the video of the Oregon-Washington Prep All-Star Challenge it was pretty clearly that Kingma has an incredibly quick shot, whether or not he will be able to contribute as more than a role player remains to be seen (but role players get scholarships as well).
We have plenty of role players........ what we need is bigs & SF's
distantobserver wrote:Going even further, Rivals currently has him ranked as the 125th best recruit in the class. Granted, the accuracy of recruiting sites is up for debate and his ranking is subject to change, but they saw something in him at some point.
And ESPN ranks 50 other small guards ahead of him?
distantobserver wrote:Also, Barron is a PG and figures to contribute at that position.
He's a combo guard. He didn't start playing PG until his junior year and he plays more like a scoring guard.

It may be a dick move, but I think Altman should pull Sim's scholarship. On the court, Sim has definitely not performed. He'll be a senior next season and he's an instate kid, so his tuition won't be very much. Sim would also have the option of transferring to a D2 school, where he would get more playing time and wouldn't have to sit out a year. I realize that this is an unlikely scenario, but this not at all uncommon, especially in college basketball. Ben Howland has done this with multiple players at UCLA.
I still don't understand why he signed Brett Kingma..... To me..... he looks pretty similar to Sim. Both are undersized 2 guards who will struggle to defend and create their own shot in the Pac 10.
I don't see why we pull Sim's scholarship, it would be easier to have a player (however good he is) familiar with Dana Altman's system than to break in a freshman.

This team needs shooters, bad. Kingma is a great shooter. I fail to see the issue?

I realize we are getting some better recruits?? But their are still differences between signing a player like Kingma and Daniels. I just hope they brought him to the new arena first. I still see him picking Kansas.

Kingma is pure shooter, something this team needs desperately. I'd take Kingma over most the players on our team right now. Really only Jacob and Catron are the two guys who I feel are kind of above everyone else. Armstead was there last year, but he's not playing good this season.

Altman's system needs a deep threat. Just about about every good team has that guy who's only job is to kill teams with the 3 ball. I don't get why you wouldn't want that. Obviously we could use some skilled 6'8 guys too, so could everyone. You take what you can get.

Marginally better!? Try WAAY better.

Every good team has specialists. Remember when we lost to Florida in the Elite Elight in '07? Do you remember who did the most damage and led FLA in scoring? No, it wasn't NBA-bound Al Horford, Corey Brewer, Joakim Noah, or Taurean Green. It was little 6'1 shooting guard Lee Humphrey, who butchered us from outside when we tried to cheat off him and double one of Florida's better-known stars. Lee knocked down 7 treys that game.
James Davis was a staple on our first Elite Eight team, and Tajuan Porter was starter on the second. Do you want 13 Kingma's on your team? No. Do you want one or two? Absolutely. Both Davis and Porter were 4th or 5th options that could reliably knock down a 3 when everything else broke down. Lee was crucial in getting Florida past us and into the Final Four, and ultimately winning their second championship.

It was only when Porter became the #1 or 2 option that the team started to go downhill. He wasn't as effective once he had to create his own shot. Kingma is definitely in the role of a James Davis or Tajuan Porter.

Has Dana Altman not changed everyone's thoughts on the BBall team already? If we are starting to run an actual defense with the limited amount of players that we have, why would anybody thing that the players we've gotten won't work out? Please, tell me why Kingma is already set for EPIC FAIL status in Eugene because I don't see it? He's certainly may not be the 2nd coming of Luke Ridnour, but this is finally a team that plays, ahem, team basketball.

With what he has to work with now, his team looks good, but I'm really looking forward to the time when Altman has enough guys to fill out a roster with legitimate D1 players.

The epic fail would be a team full of guards and no inside presence. You can have only so many undersized players....

Well tell me what Centers and Power Forwards we could have gotten then?
Right now this team pretty much has nothing. You have to start somewhere and that usually begins with who you can get to come here. EK's teams may have had big bodies like Mitch Platt, Adam Zahn etc, but he couldn't do anything with them. So far, we've seen DA take what few players we have and turn everyones perceptions around. I just think it is borderline moronic to be ripping on a guy like Kingma when realistic alternatives just weren't there. Its the same thing to me with Garrett Sim. IF there were better players that wanted to be at Oregon, they'd be here.

Who on our team requires a double team?
1. Teams are collapsing on Catron all the time when he gets the ball in the paint. We're getting quite a few wide open looks this year, but only EJ and Teondre have been able to consistently hit the deep shot. It'd be GREAT to have a pure shooter back there. Altman's entire system is based on getting the basketball into the heart of the defense and forcing defenses to react, which also presents us with open shots. Was this a serious question?
2. Kingma is not on the team this year, thus asking who requires a double team this year has no relevancy. If Altman continues to bring in guys like Jabari Brown, we'll have a couple guys who opposing teams are going to want to pay extra attention to, making a specialist like Kingma invaluable.
