Glad they've got 2 QBs, but not sure either is Oregon caliber. Moga is a great athlete but has a few years of development ahead of him as a passer. MVB will come in better prepared, but I don't know what upside he has. Might be an Anu Solomon at best.

Losing Dante Moore is probably going to suck for a long time. That said, transfer portal at QB helps a lot when taking a kid like Moga who could be an elite college QB in 3-4 years or a total bust who goes and plays G5.

With Justin Williams picking UGA, the Ducks are probably going to go all-in on Platt to finish up the LB class. It'd also be nice to get at least one of the few remaining 5* guys on the board.

Lanning and Cristobal both had one 5 star in their first class, and one 5 star in their second class.

All I’m saying is that so far it seems like Lanning is great at getting 4 stars on board but I believe this is already three high 5 stars this class then would’ve been great lands that for a while seemed like Oregon was going to get then suddenly they went elsewhere. Lanning needs to figure out how to get at least a few of these guys to Oregon.

And yes, I’m aware not all 5 stars pan out like Justin Flowe, BUT, there’s a reason why the teams with the top recruiting classes consistently like Georgia, Bama, and Ohio State, are also competing for national championships. Class is really good, but Lanning needs great to elite classes to get Oregon to compete for the playoffs and high 5 stars like KT are what makes classes great. Lanning still has time so hopefully we get a surprise 5 star or two or he flips Rushing and Williams.

It’s hard to keep track of the different recruiting services, but Lanning has only had 1 full recruiting class and landed multiple 5 stars in Dickey and Matayo. Hard to count the class prior, when he had 0 HC track record and was hired the week of the early signing day, but he still managed to snag Conerly. The class still has a long ways to go. Guys we’ll get bumps, they will still likely land Baker, etc. I don’t think he’s a step down from Mario at all in recruiting. Also, I don’t think Funa and Wright were 5 stars, but maybe some service had them labeled as such.

Recruiting doesn't matter if you can't develop the talent ... and that was Mario's biggest issue at Oregon. I don't care how many 5* kids you get, if you're not able to coach them up to that level, then you're going to struggle.

Look at Utah. They recruit 3-4* kids but they know how to coach them up and they've won back to back conference championships. Programs like USC and Texas, on the other hand, have constantly had great classes over the past 15 years but it's been all hot air, very little substance in the form of New Year's Bowl appearances.

But according to the data, you are not even right on that assumption. And actually I was also wrong in saying they both had two 5 stars in their first two classes... In both of their first 32 months at Oregon, Cristobal landed one 5 star (Kayvon Thibodeaux) and Lanning landed two 5 stars (Jurrion Dickey and Josh Conerly Jr).

Your narrative is based off what you perceive rather than what is actually happening. Could Mario still end up being a better recruiter at Oregon than Lanning? Sure. But as of now, Lanning looks better on paper.

Thanks for the clarification, I thought Matayo was a 4 star and some 5 stars Mario landed were really 4 stars, so I stand corrected.

As I’ve said before I’d much rather have Lanning, I never tried to argue Mario is a better coach, just from my perception it looked like he might be better at landing a few elite recruits but not better at recruiting overall as he was a star chaser which something Lanning does not seem to be.

These misses also hurt more under Lanning because for a while it really seemed like Oregon was going to get them only for them to switch at the last min, mainly Rushing. We’ll see how this class ends up but we definitely could use a few elite players especially on defense.

Gotcha^. And we gotta give Lanning the rest of this year to really start comparing recruiting.

And as others stated above, recruiting in NIL and transfer portal world is a different game. Recruiting classes mean less than they ever have before.
