If we can't get a guy like Dixon or Tubby I would much us go after a mid major coach like the guy from N Illinois or New mexico than bring in a guy like PJ who may not be here for that long. I want a coach that will be here for a long time & take this program to the next level, not just be a temporary fix. I bet PJ would have a lot of success here but for how long? What do we do when he wants to retire in 10-15 years? I would be happy with the hire but I just don't think its what we need.

Wright? Not sure where that came from, anyway Tony Barbee is someone mops and I have talked about who could be a good fit here. He's only 38 years old, he's African-american, his last name is awful, but he's done a really good job with UTEP in just a short amount of time:

2006–2007 UTEP 14–17 6–10 10th
2007–2008 UTEP 19–14 8–8 6th CBI First Round
2008–2009 UTEP 20–12 10–6 4th CBI
2009-2010 UTEP 24-5 15-1

Yeah if we can't get a winning coach from a bigger school I'd want to get a guy like Barbee. Young, up & coming guy.

One thing to consider is what the cost of these coaches would be. The athletic department and Nike both really want a name to open the new arena, but do you really think they are going to pay a guy more than Chip Kelly? And he only made just under $2M last year. I'm not sure that would be enough to lure a Dixon or a Few.

That's why Carlesimo makes some sense. He's still a name but he would probably take the job for around what Ernie is making now. An up and comer like Turgeron or Randy Bennett (who's team just knocked off the mighty Gonzaga to win the WCC tourney) may be better choices, but they aren't names the average fan would know.

That is what the R-G was talking about in their article today, that they may have to rework Kelly's salary if they pay a new BB coach more than him since his team provides the athletic department most of it's revenue.

I don't even know what to say. Probably the only situation I could imagine that is worse than the one we have now is the one where PJ is the Oregon coach. If he gets hired, I am calling Spreewell to finish the job!

Few
Tubby
Dixon
Turgeon
Alford


I don't think an assistant coach in the NBA or someone that hasn't coached college basketball in awhile or not at all is a good idea.

First of all, I said it makes sense based on name recognition and salary demands, I never said it was the right hire.

Second, if you don't think either can coach a lick, that's fine, but calling either "low class" is ridiculously off base. I can't call a time when either has ever been disrespectful to the fans or media. And if PJ was even remotely racist there is a 0% chance he would be hanging around the NBA for so long. These comments hold absolutely no merit.

I like all of the RG's picks (while acknowledging that some are outside the box) except for Steve Alford. Yes, his New Mexico teams have been very good. New Mexico's "Pit" has long been recognized as one of the most difficult places to play in the country. But the guy was not good at Iowa, threw a bunch of hissy fits, hated being second fiddle to Kirk Ferentz (and I hope nobody disagrees that Chip Kelly will remain the top dog in Oregon's AD...) and was fired for a reason. Just like some coaches are better fits in college as opposed to the NBA, I think Steve Alford is a better fit for the mid-majors of the world, where he can be a big fish in a little pond.

Alford is going to be lower on the list due to his record and past statements/actions. The top four for the job are probably Tubby, Few, Dixon, and Turgeon (in no particular order).

If I were looking to spend in the range of $1 - $1.5million I'd be looking at Brad Stephens.
If I were looking to spend $1.5 - $2.0 million I'd be looking at Kevin Stallings (not sure of his interest in moving).

he's taking the DePaul job, not official yet i don't think, but its happening
