Not the best day for our run "defense". They are getting tore up the entire game. However this is a crazy early start so that matters.
They showed signs of this being a problem in the Oklahoma State game. Our linebackers are not good and defensive line outside of Washington is solid but not good enough to make up for it. I'm starting to get a little worried a school like Penn State is just gonna take their 4-5 yards a play and kill us slowly. We benefited some from some bad passes by NU, but they also had some plays that they'd never be able to replicate, plus I just expect growing pains with a young unit.
We'll see how it goes. We should totally shut down OSU's run game because they have the worst offensive line in program history, but if they gash us then it might be time to panic.

Moga has already been in!
Moga was in but not for much time at all.
If you're gonna take the foot off the gas, which we probably should stop doing, I think it sends the wrong message, and your intention is to get your backups meaningful game time to prep them for the future then having him in for more than the short amount of time he was in is needed.

Has anything been confirmed at all about the absence of Novosad? Going on two weeks now. I hope he is ok. Wondering if it is a longer term injury. In that case, maybe you don’t want Moga to play too many downs, as he would be QB2. With the game in hand, go deep into the bench.

How do you feel about Mixon? Seemed like he played well.
But it’s clear Jackson’s mind isn’t in it. There were a couple plays where it legit looked like he wasn’t paying attention.

I was at the game so it was honestly more difficult to identify individual players than it is on TV with a bird's eye view, but what is really obvious is that he's very strong in pass defense. In the first two games, he was better than Jackson in rush defense but still left a good bit to be desired, so I'll have to see if I can stream it on the flight home to see if this was the same, better, or worse.

Novosad was there in full pads and with his helmet on. Can’t imagine that would be the case if it was a long term injury. My guess is he could play in a pinch, but they’d rather let him get to 100% if they can. So, he’d be available if Moore got hurt in a close game, but didn’t want to risk using him in garbage time.
The speakers were horrid, giant loudspeakers were the only appreciable crowd noise, the actual student’s section was small and quiet. The speakers on the main board were blaring right over Lannings head and had the balance set poorly (major league peaking sound level).

This exactly. Any Stanford-esque offense is gonna give this team problems.

Forgot you went! how was the whole experience? (Sorry if you posted about it earlier in this thread, playing catchup from a busy weekend)
As you have noticed, I lean more on the lurker side. I didn't post about it earlier, you didn't miss anything (I could be mean and gaslight but I'll be good).
Evanston is a nice suburb. Summary of what I will say this about the gameday experience, I thought New Mexico (where I went to professional school) was sleepy on gameday, this put that to shame. We got a tiny amount of f tier trash talk and the best they had was "Moore is garbage and overrated, oh but you guys are cool". We were on the north side. They have two large errector-set style grandstands on each side to supplement the tiny main stands. I walked to the stadium with a 10+yr 50 yard line season ticket holder. His main comment is last year people were complaining that the speakers were not able to be heard, clearly they fixed one issue by causing another. The balance was horrid. Everytime the sound levels were increased and it even threatened high pitched tone the speakers peaked. The get pumped speakers were so much louder than any crowd noise. Oregon fans were at least 50% of the visitors. If you note Lannings comments on the pumped in noise that is why. The speakers I'm talking about were right overtop of him.

Not to piss all over the doom and gloom party that seems to appear here every time we don’t shutout a team and hold them under 150 yards of offense, but consider this:
NU had something like 180 yards on our starting D and they didn’t score. All of their scoring came against 3rd string and walk-ons.
As Crepea noted, Oregon had success stopping the run against 12 and 22 personnel.
When it came down to it, 4th and 1, and NU had to put hat on hat and everyone on the planet knew they were gonna run, they went nowhere.
I get that there are many things to improve on. They will “Go to the doctor” at practice and the coaches will keep working to correct it.
Other teams have scholarship D1 athletes, somewhat competent coaches and are going to give us their best shot. To freak out because we were up 34-0 in a stale “BYOJ” environment and a 9am first road game is a wee bit of a stretch there Superchiefs.;
It’s okay to want continuous improvement and it absolutely should be expected. But college football and these kid’s lives don’t exist in a vacuum and I think sometimes we forget to appreciate some of the things our roster and coaching staff does well.

It's true they didn't score until garbage time, but their running game was moving the ball just as good as our running game in the first three quarters. Oregon's run game had 3.9 ypg outside of Hill's HR run. Not the prettiest!
I also fear Oregon may struggle a couple times on the road like this. Allowing strong lines/running games to outwork our front 7, and for our run game to struggle to find it's way against stout defenses. It's early, but this game is 33% of the data we have so far, which is data that holds probably more weight than the other 66% against beta teams at home.
I'm not necessarily advocating for pff stats, but it is concerning when all five of your starting linemen have a run block grade under 60 against Northwestern, except Pregnon at 66.4.

I don't think a single person is "freaking out", I don't get that sense at all. But I do think most of us analyze the game thinking, "Can this team win the national championship" or "Beat Ohio State when it counts", so when a less than average team lines up and punches them in the face for 60 minutes and we don't see that we are able to stop them (gaining yards) it's concerning.
Yep, it was 34-0 when Lanning took his foot off the gas, (maybe he shouldn't have), but I do believe when you watch the game, a lot of us think to ourselves, "Penn State offense line is gonna eat".
