Ryan Katz and Yom Kippur

In this time of Jewish (and Christian, as it so happens) holidays, I was reading online about how improved the Beaver starting QB might be, and got to thinking: Since his last name is quite Jewish, is he at all observant? Obviously not on Shabbats during football season! But what of the "highest" day of all on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, which this year falls on a Saturday, October 8, when the Beavers are scheduled to host Arizona? Would he attempt to do at least "something" for the day . . . actually "fast" and still play?? . . .

I'm not assuming he's observant and I suspect it won't be an issue at all, but when I saw that YK falls on Saturday this year, I couldn't help but wonder a bit . . .

I texted my friend who plays for the Beavers and knows Katz well. I asked him if he is Jewish and if so if he is observant. He said he doesn't think he is.

It seems that a lot of younger Jewish people aren't as observant as the older ones, not to say that all are like that. I had some friends who were Jewish at Oregon and they said that Jews become more observant as they get older, especially once they start families of their own.

Good point... seems to be the case with a lot of young people and their spiritual beliefs...

This is not entirely true. I have been really good friends with OSU DT Kevin Frahm since 8th grade and he is Jewish despite going to Central Catholic with me. He is probably one of the most observant Jews I have ever seen to the point where Yom Kippur fell on a Friday our junior or senior year when we played Reynolds or Gresham or something like that and he had to get special permission from his Rabbi before he would even consider participating in the game. He even missed practice for like 2 or 3 days that week when he thought it wasn't going to happen and it tore him up inside all week since the man just lives and breathes football.
