This could suck...

Post by woundedknees »

Sounds as if Ashaolu is declaring for the draft (Sans Agent)... If undrafted, he could still play somewhere, but what are the odds of that?

http://www.northpolehoops.com/Giant_Lea ... eclare_NBA

"Ashaolu’s choice to declare was seen as a shocker. Many thought he would return again for another season at Louisiana Tech and increase his draft stock for next year. With that being said Ashaolu’s numbers speak for themselves. He averaged 14.2 points, and 9.4 rebounds per game. He was a double-double monster. His 6-7 height complimented with above average athleticism has helped him become an excellent rebounder which is what NBA teams could be looking for later on in the draft."

like i said in another thread, he isn't really very good. he got the ball every possession and his stats are still just average besides rebounding numbers.

Even tho I'm sure he would have helped. But only for 1 year. I'd rather see
Altman bring in talent that's gonna be here longer. There was also nothing to
suggest he was coming here for sure. So this doesn't bother me at all.

I would have liked to see him come here since this team needed any size it could get. I do believe that Altman will get the post situation righted in a couple years, even if it's going to be tough watching Oregon get manhandled down low until that happens.

That seems like an oddly strong opinion. He's shot around 70% from inside the arc all three years, including an absurd 77% as sophomore. Catron, by comparison, shot 59% this year. I don't know. He's a double double machine; even is he did get fed the ball on a majority of possessions, you can't say that he doesn't convert. You could argue he's a Zach Randolph -- when the ball goes in, it doesn't come back out -- but saying he's not very good seems to contradict his numbers.

You can't build programs off of 1yr rentals... would rather see those minutes go to Kuemper (assuming he doesn't redshirt).

maybe i am bias to the times i've watched him play utah state. here are the stats from those games.

1. 9 pts, 5 fouls, 6 reounds 4/7 shooting
2. 9 pts, 7 rebounds, 2/12 shooting (and a 72-30 loss on senior night)
3. 11 pts, 4 rebounds, 4/11 shooting
4. 6 pts, 4 rebounds, 2/4 shooting
5. 8 pts, 6 rebounds, 4/4 shooting
6. 12 pts, 6 rebounds, 6/12 shooting

he had 15 games his soph year where he scored 9 pts or less
8 games jr yr where he scored 9 pts or less (and they went to him every possession this last season)

Agreed, maybe for the first year, just so we have enough bodies. But now that DA has his first class in the bag, no more one and done's please.

While I agree with the premise of not building a program on one-and-dones, I don't necessarily think it would be a bad thing in this situation, with this particular player. He could help at a position we need help at. I would think he would be infinitely more capable of producing quicker than, say, Austin Kuemper. If he can help win games and push Oregon towards another 20 win season, I think that would be worth more than getting a guy like Kuemper some minutes so he can contribute in 2013.

Especially if those 20 wins could somehow be achieved before the PAC-12 Tournament...

And it's not like he would be taking a spot from next year's class. He'd just be filling an open spot left by Teondre that would have come open anyways after next season.

Really!?

We had to buy 5 home games against shitty teams to get those "20 wins"

That's really more important than developing players... so that we can hopefully have a more competitive team in the future?

I think we've talked about this before. Altman can walk into any recruit's house he wants and say "We were the consensus last place team going into last season, and we won over 20 games. Come be a part of this." The CBI run was an excellent foundation to build upon.

Yes, getting this kid and helping us win games right now is more important than throwing a kid like Kuemper to the wolves right away, in hopes that he's ready to contribute in a few years. Kuemper is not ready to be an impact player right now. Ergo, getting this kid would be a slam-dunk.

You develop as a player in ways other than game minutes, too, y'know. There is NOTHING to suggest Kuemper's growth would be stunted if this kid came to play for us for a year. NOTHING.

And I never said anything about going on another CBI run, so I don't know what you mean by "that's more important than developing talent" line.

Altman has better things to sell kids on than a mediocre record with a CBI victory.

I think most people thought the same about Singler.... I think that turned out nicely for him

Ya, I'm sure playing limited minutes and sitting out of games helps

 There's nothing to suggest that it wont either

I understand the logic of taking a 1 and done player if it get's you into the tournament...... but I think it's safe to say that's not going to happen with this kid and our team.

But I'd see no real harm in taking a player who'd be filling a scholarship of player who only had a year left anyways. If anything, learning from an experienced post player could help Keumper and temporarily provide depth at a position of need.
