Maryland Hires Mark Turgeon...

Post by woundedknees »

Dang, that was quick... Oregon wasn't his dream school?

Turgeon was offered the job on Monday and accepted it that night.

"It was a very tough decision," Turgeon said. "Probably my best team coming back. So hard to say goodbye to players.

"But Maryland was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Tremendous area with so many good players and terrific support."

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson tried to lure big names Jamie Dixon of Pitt, Jay Wright of Villanova and Sean Miller of Arizona to College Park in the wake of Gary Williams' retirement. He also, according to sources, reached out to Brad Stevens (Butler) and Mike Brey (Notre Dame).

It's not like Maryland is a bad school so not really surprising he'd listen to them instead of Oregon. Oregon hasn't had anywhere near the success Maryland has had.

Maryland is a much better basketball school.

Turgeon was my top choice for the UO job last offseason. He's an excellent coach and a pretty good recruiter. From what I've heard, Turgeon really enjoyed his time in Eugene but felt slighted because the AD completely passed over him in favor of Ernie Kent, even though Jerry Green urged them to take a chance on Turgeon.

I'm sure that some Maryland fans are upset that they didn't get Sean Miller, but Turgeon is a very good hire. He's also a pretty young guy (46).
“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

Not surprised that Turgeon would be more interested in Maryland, they have won a National Championship in recent memory. He should be a very good hire..

Plus, they're in an excellent recruiting area and play in one of the best basketball conferences.

Yeah, that would be a pretty sweet draw as well. Virginia/Maryland usually have good prospects. Though I get annoyed when people use this as an excuse, the fact that Maryland is a basketball school helps as well.

Wish I had a list of all the coaches who turned us down and all their excuses. There are a million
reasons why one school is a better job than the other.

It'd be pretty interesting to see that, but I bet a lot of them would say the high roster turnover, they're in a good situation already, or have a contract extension.
