Embree out at Colorado?

According to Bruce Feldman. I know the Buffs looked terrible this year but only two years? It's not like he inherited a good program. Wonder if they will contact Helfrich, former OC at Colorado?

Jon Embree is out at Colorado after two seasons, two sources told CBSSports.com Sunday afternoon. The Buffs went 4-21 in his two seasons at CU. This year Embree's team went 1-11.

Less than 48 hours ago, Embree told reporters that Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn had assured him he will return in 2013. But on Sunday afternoon the coach was informed by the AD of the change.

The 47-year-old former CU tight end had replaced Dan Hawkins who spent five years at Colorado and went 19-39

Feel bad for Embree. He was put in a position where he couldn't succeed.

Agreed. Two years wasn't nearly enough time to bring in freshman players and build a program from the ground up.

It makes me wonder if they may have been contacted by a "name" coach about the position? There are a couple guys I can think of that might just jump on the position.

Jeff Tedford and Rick Nueheisal.

Cal was 1-10 the year Tedford took over and had immediate success under him.

Rick Nueheisal had great success at Colorado before leaving for Washington and would probably jump at the opportunity to coach there again. Also, Rick Nueheisal would have a huge advantage in recruiting, as he not only has California ties from his UCLA tenure, but he'd also have other ties from his days in the Big-12.

Unlike some of the other college towns in the conference, Boulder has a great college sports environment. I haven't been there in years, but I've heard it's similar to Eugene in many ways.

No, Embree didn't get a fair shake, but I think what it comes down to are the big name hires that occurred at Arizona and Washington State. They need to bring someone in that is a great recruiter and motivator and that can re-energize their fan base.

I definitely don't think that Mark Helfrich is that guy. Word has it, they were ready to run him out of town when he left for Oregon.

I think they spoke to Mike Bellotti before they hired Embree, but I don't think Bellotti was very serious about the job. He may want to coach again at some point, but I doubt that he'd want to step into a major rebuilding job.

Also, the money that Colorado was offering before was very low compared to Pac-12 standards. They're going to have to pony up some cash if they want a big name coach. You get what you pay for in this business. If you do somehow get a bargain they don't stick around long without a pay raise. They shouldn't have any problem now that they're getting TV revenue and an equal revenue share from the conference. They weren't getting that in the Big-12.

Tedford, like Bellotti in 2003 and 2004, offense was stale and Pac 10 teams figured it out. Unlike MB, he never changed his ways, while Mike saw a change was needed, and set aside his pride to make that change.

Yes, when Slick Rick left CU, they were sanctioned.

He then took the job at UW.

Maybe Rick could donate a (large-ish) portion of any salary to begin re-paying the CU AD for the Buffalo-Shiite Removal Program that was necessary when he left foe UW?

Agree. No coach deserves to be fired after two years unless they embarrass the program off the field or are responsible for an NCAA investigation.

By all accounts, Embree is a good guy who cared about his players on and off the field. Considering that Colorado has the worst facilities in the conference and has sucked for quite some time, I'd say that he did a decent job in terms of recruiting. The cabinet was completely bare when he took over.

That being said, I wish nothing but the worst for the Colorado football program. Their fans are complete scum. It's a shame that Larry Scott can't return them to the Big 12 (should have taken the Oklahoma schools instead).

Was following the press conference he had with the AD yesterday and from what I gathered, the AD didn't want to fire him and basically ripped the CU athletic department as a whole. Agree that he got a rough deal but they don't have a shot at any legit coach at this point. Why would any coach, even if at a mid-major give up his less paying job to go to a school that just canned a guy after two years? They really cut the future of the program off at the knees with this move. Furthermore, if I'm a recruit, how can I commit to a school/coach with this having just happened. They really screwed the pooch on this one.

Following Sunday's announcement that CU has fired head coach Jon Embree, athletic director Mike Bohn said Monday he had a top target in mind and that man is currently a head coach at another college program. He also said he has not talked to that coach about the CU job.

I bet its Nick Saban

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the Colorado state legislation/constition limits/restricts how much money they can pay the assistants so even if they fork over 2.5/year to the HC, they cannot fork over the $ for the assistants.

Man, I would rather take a flyer on a complete unknown than bring in a recycled coach with baggage like Mangino.

Seriously, not to mention overrated. He had 1 out of 8 seasons with better than .500 record in conference play. Won't last in the Pac-12. He also had only 1 winning season in his first 5 years. Should have given Embree another year or two. Dumb.
