Recruiting concerns/expectations
Totally open recruiting thread here to pose any question or concern you have for the team moving forward. Last week is officially the kick off and moving forward we should start hearing a lot more about kids narrowing down schools a bit, planning some visits, and camps are getting in full swing.
For the ducks, myself, I like how the Ducks have positioned themselves with many elite players, using our limited class size to capture interest. I believe that we will be getting several solid recruits this year, but obviously we will just have fewer recruits as a whole. I'm a little concerned about QB, it's not a very deep class of QB's this year, and beyond Bolden I don't like where we are at for some of the others. Long ways to go here, just can't handle another Tajh Boyd heartbreak here. Also wishing that Lowe and Clay two early "Duck locks if offered" would pull the trigger and go "green". I respect making a well thought decision, just some duck homerism wishing they were locked up. Lastly, my top two wish list guys are Isaac Dixon and Owa. Hope we pursue them and Owa gives us the distance advantage for once, and I like Dixon, I think he will make a helluva rover and will cripple people back there.
Thoughts?

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
I hope we can lock up a couple more players sooner than later. I think it would help with recruiting momentum.
I'm not too concerned right now with the QB class this year. However, if we don't get one this year, next year we would have to get a couple or we could be in some trouble.

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
I think we defnitely need to get a good qb this class. I am skeptical of Bolden though as has a lot of really good teams after him and as we have seen in past that with distance equals sorry ducks. The reason want one this year is so can get in the system and when Darron Thomas graduates we have one thats been in system for a year and we are just reloading instead of having somebody new. I like being in contention for the top 3 players on rivals and hope we can get one of them. All three would be great. Other than qb I guess my next area of concern would be at cornerback. If we lose that kid that has problems with the law in Fresno we will be really thin there. As far as Oqa goes I would love to have him. I think he will go to a bigger school though from early conversations it seems that is where he is wanting to go. He didnt seem to be blown away at the spring game. Think probably USC but that is just my guess.

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
When I look at the '10 class I think of keeping the talent close to home home. Tell me a year when Oregon has had three high major prospects where anyone of them could go about anywhere outside of SC? That is saying something. Owa, White, and Keanon Lowe all will be special players in time and we already have Curtis White committed. White has told me he is trying to recruit Lowe and Owa to Oregon and it sounds like Owa for one is coming around to Oregon. Lowe has stated he wants to play close to home.
After locking up the state's big 3, I'd like to see us shore up the DL by getting a guy like Uko or Hemuli. Either one is going to be a good player and could help right away. It'd be nice to get both but I don't think that will happen. Getting improved depth at OL is also crucial. We are going to need to find a center or a guy who can play center if needed. We are one more good group of OL away from being set for about 5 years.
I think the Quarterback spot is a tough situation. It is going to be really hard to land that 5* or high 4* QB due to the fact he will have to sit for a very long time. So the its most likely we will take a guy who has the tools to be great, just needs time to hone his game. Or, do you wait a year to sign a truly top flight QB the following year and risk the fact that we get burned on having a large break?
Right now Running Back is key. We need a big back in the worst way. Scat backs are easy to find or develop and we will have no problem in that area. Our spread is at it's best when we have a big guy who strikes fear into the defense because of how big he is and how hard he falls to the ground. Personally I think we don't know who the big back is that we get yet. There are still lots of guys out there and I think we take someone who isn't a "Big Name".
I'd also like to see us land a top notch DB. If that is CB or S I don't care, although if I had to pick I'd want a bigger Safety much like Anthony Leon's boy type. 6'2ish and 210 or so in the backfield where he can lay the wood. Our defense seems to have a nastyness and swagger to it when we have a head-hunter in the backfield.

With everything this program has had going for it in the past, there is no reason that Oregon shouldn't be able to get a top qb every season.

1. I want the State of Oregon "Big 3": White, Owa, and Lowe
2. I want Clay and 1 large back.
3. I want a true dual-threat QB in this class to develop.

Also, my expectations are high for this next recruiting class. Oregon had a great season last year with a top 10 finish. Since we didn't really see the results of that with this last recruiting class, this is the year where we need to get a lot of the players we want.

I agree, except that I think it is very important for us to have a great season this year as well. If we can put up 10 or more wins this year. I think we will have an exceptional recruiting class..Then the avalanche of dominance will began for the mighty ducks!!duckgrad99 wrote:Also, my expectations are high for this next recruiting class. Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
I must say I get disappointed about losing out on a recruit "we think" we are getting like most fans but it happens every year and part of the process so I don't let it get to me.
As far a s recruiting goes, I'd like a numbers of spots addressed: QB, OL, RB, DT, S and CB. Priorities being RB,OL, DL, and S. I sounds like RB and S will addressed quite well but DL will be the difficult spot this year. Tt just seems the there are very few DT available this year but its early so I will hold out hope...

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
Switch one and two for me. If we don't get some legit DT help, we're going to be in big big trouble next year and especially in the years after. I think we need another RB but could survive without one. I also really want a QB that can come in and get acclimated so he can push DT after Masoli leaves. We also need to pick up a few quality d-backs, a good WR or two, and some depth for the o-line.karlhungis wrote:My wish list in order is:

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
I think as fans we might be getting our expectations raised just a little too high by the low number of schollies available, and the idea that this will lead to all highly rated players. While it is true that we have gradually gotten a better caliber recruit through increased exposure and a more national presence, we still do not have the pull of a USC, Florida, Ohio State or even Alabama.
Don't get me wrong, I am not someone who thinks we should not go after highly rated national recruits- we should. I just expect the closing ratio to be pretty low, even in years that we do not have a lot of openings.
I just don't think we should be too surprised when the normal number of 2 and 3 stars guys are part of this class.

We also already have Grant from this class @ RB, and I like what Alston, LMJ, and Barner can do. Obviously we are missing that big bruiser type RB, but who says Chris Harper won't end up being that guy? DT is by far our biggest weakness, and adding someone who could contribute immediately is key.

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
DT is definitely an area of concern, I imagine we band aid that wound with a couple JUCO DT's over the next couple years, while also taking some prep DT's as well. I really hope this year is that year that we all have been expecting with the big time recruits, Clay could be that big time RB we always are in for, Bolden the QB, winning those two plus the 3 in state recruits could be a nice group, plus all those diamond in the rough players we are so good at finding.

Re: Recruiting concerns/expectations
Here is just a curious question when it comes to our recruiting for next year. If we o not land Owa is there a good DE out there we can get. It seems in some aspects Oregon is putting all their eggs in that basket per se and big drop off between Owa and the rest. Why not start pursuing some of the other big recruits for DE. I do not know who they are but seems to me would go after some of them as kin of a back up plan.
