Thoughts On 2009 and 2010 Classes

While it seems like we might be missing out on a few guys we wanted (Phillip, Johnson, Jefferson, McNeal) and waiting if we can land others (Brown, Boyd, Hall, Wheaton, Gaines, Burell, Harris, and others) I decided to shed some light on some things.

I still belive the Ducks will sign a top 25 class THIS YEAR. There are lots of players still on the board and we always finish strong every single year. I think this year we will see some surprise commits that we either thought we had no shot at getting or guys we didn't even know we were recruiting.

I am not too sure however we will be overbooking for this class. That doesnt mean some guys won't grayshirt.

As for the 2010 class. I am hearing the most positive news I have ever heard this early in the game about Oregon on kids from all over the nation. Stuff like, "How could you not be interested in Oregon with what they have done" to "Oregon is one of the favorite schools for what they did last year and this year".

We already have 2 top 250 rivals players in the 2010 class in Curtis White and Ethan Grant. All signs are pointing to the fact that we will land a few other top guys like this before the season even starts.

Recently found out that there is Maxpreps Junior All American that has stated Oregon and OSU lead as they are close to home and both schools are top notch. Found out a kid from FL who hits like a truck loves Oregon so much he is trying every way possible to get in touch with Kelly.

Things might look bleek star wise but trust the coaches and understand that we are program in middle ground of being a solid team to one that is a national player. Recruits are taking notice of all this early pre-season hype. Last year and thsi year's success wont be really noticable in a large way until 2010 and even more so in 2011 when Oregon comes off 4 out of 5 great seasons that had wins of 10, 9, 10, and maybe 10+.

CK is out on the road right now using his privelege as an assistant coach to make countless in home visits to our advantage. I think he is only home on the weekend to greet the incoming visitors.
but like Mops says, hang on, as AJ on Rivals and Marty on Scout are constantly updating their "CK tracker(s)" and he is all over the US meeting guys we have never heard of/mentioned. Of course paying attention to the high profiles we have a good shot at. Boyd today, Hall at the end of the week, I think he's visiting Gaines tomorrow or something. Remember:

Thanks, Mops. I think it would be foolhardy to give up on this class now. Still, for a program that aspires to be a perennial top 10 one, saying, "I still beli[e]ve the Ducks will sign a top 25 class" is not, of itself, particularly inspiring to me.

What type of classes do you expect each year? We will never be able to compete for top 10 classes year in, year out, no matter what, geography & in-state talent dictate that. If we continue to put together top 20 classes like the last two years, and have a top 25-ish class be considered a down year, then we are in great shape. The 07-08-09 classes are setting us up for a run for the next 4-5 years that could be something special with CK's offense running at full steam now.

nice post mops, like i said on other post, If we miss out on Boyd, Brown and others. This will create opportunity for 2010 like Grant, other HB who is interesting in Ducks could come to Oregon since Blount and crenshaw will be gone.

Right now, we aren't a perennial top ten team. Not even close. We've finished top ten just two or three times in this decade. That is far from perennial. A top 25 class gives the coaches enough talent to do something great.

Our class may currently be short on superstars but if you think about it, our current roster is made up of mostly 3-star guys and I think we're doing just fine. Don't forget Unger and Chung were both 2-stars and they turned out to be two of the best players ever to play for the Ducks. It's not over yet, either. Guys like Boyd, Brown, Hall, Gaines, and Harris are still out there. If we land one of them, it suddenly becomes a very good year. If we land two, it becomes a great year....

...not to mention we are getting off to a great start in 2010. The uncertainty of the transition may have hurt us a bit this year. Just think about it, the two places that we are having trouble getting players, DL and WR, have unfilled coaching positions.

I think Chip Kelly is one of the hottest names in coaching, nationally, right now. It seems he can get into any living room he wants. The 2010 class will reflect that.
