A little off topic, but I've long thought that for recruits visiting for the first time, you should have them fly into PDX and drive down if they're from cities elsewhere (LA, Bay area, etc.). I've flown into Eugene twice or so, but flying in, you see how surrounded by fields it is and it feels like you're getting dropped off in the absolute middle of nowhere. Flying into Portland and driving, you get a sense that you're not far from it all. I'm pretty sure I read at one point that Notre Dame flies recruits to chicago and drives out for similar reasons.

Kids are so in their own world anyway today, focused on their laptop/IPad while listening to tunes. I’m a window guy, but can’t tell you amount of kids I see on planes today that are disinterested about what goes on outside the aircraft. The 2hr drive seems like it would be more of an issue, regardless of what you see out of the window.

I'd be curious to know everyone's PDX-Eugene speed records. I was riding in a car once and we probably made the drive in an hour and 15 minutes.

Regarding the actual topic, I can't hate on added connections! Though I wish this would have happened long ago when I lived in CA. Driving 10 hours from Sonora or nine hours from Merced was not fun. Although I still probably would have preferred driving all the way to fighting Bay Area traffic.

I believe my record is around 1 hour and 20 minutes. I was coming home late at night from a Blazers game and was basically on cruise control the entire way back at between 65-75 MPH. Probably also the best gas mileage I ever had in my car as I got around 35-38 MPG on that tank of gas.

Let's not discuss my record. Suffice to say it was well in excess of 75 mph... My Dad was in a hurry to get home from a Winterhawks game (Hockey) at the old Portland Coliseum.

I definitely wasn't driving that night!

We made a trip to Klamath Falls (only hit the high spots on the road) in a Citation, after work one night. 158 miles one way

I knew we were pushing the envelope when we arrived in under an hour and 45 minutes.

I had been pacing myself by following a group of long haul truckers, and had no idea we were travelling at that speed. I found out when I took the car to have the speedometer checked that the factory installed gear on it was 12 mph slow at 60 mph.

I once drove from Merced, CA to Ashland in 4 hours and 45 minutes... it was the night before a Duck game maybe in 2005, and I was staying with my sister and then leaving for Eugene early the next morning. I was probably averaging 90 mph, but in CA that's like driving 75 in Oregon.

Let's not discuss my record. Suffice to say it was well in excess of 75 mph... My Dad was in a hurry to get home from a Winterhawks game (Hockey) at the old Portland Coliseum.

I definitely wasn't driving that night!

In 1972 I left Portland in my 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440 with after market intake with two big hollies on it and made it to Eugene in just over an hour and 5 minutes (I slowed down in Coburg). Yes I know how fast I would have to average to make it 110 miles in 60 minutes. Wasn't even pushing that big beauty. This was at 3 in the morning and didn't see a single police officer. Try that now-a-days and you've lost your license and spend some time in jail. Different times back then... wouldn't think about doing that now or for the last 40 years for that matter

My '69 el Camino SS could have done that.

For that matter, the 1970 Judge my brother in law drove, or my little bro's Skylark GS. Those were different times, eh!
