Catching Up

Post by Penky26 »

Really just focused on the team and the season and held off on following recruiting news but can someone give me a short summary of how we are doing and how this class looks like it will finish up, Top 15? Top 20? not so good? Thanks

If all of our 'silents' actually committed instead of going elsewhere, we would have the best recruiting class in the nation

same story, different year

(In actuality though, the class is shaping up to be pretty good...definitely top 20. Likely commits from a handful of high star players (at least at this moment...Dior Mathis, Gabe King, erik dargan). Hope for commits from a bunch of other talented guys: Lache seastrunk, ricky heimuli, bjorn werner, marcus lattimore, christian thomas, Owa O#@#@#@#

No hope for a big DT so far)

I would call Heimuli and Werner big DT's. If we land both those guys our DT position will be in great shape.

I'd be happy with Heimuli, Werner, Seastrunk and Mathis, those are my favorites right now.

True...my bad

Heimuli is probably going on a mission though, so Werner is the one who will help in the immediate term

I would say at this point it is not looking near as good as we would have hoped before the season started. If we get the big names on our board to actually pull the trigger then it will greatly improve. The loss of Easily as well Grant only shows that the big recruits still are going elsewhere. Yes this class has the potential with what is left to be a top 20. I had hopes though would be a top 10. Those have died though. Easily is just the latest in a long line of recruits that talked out of both sides of his mouth saying one thing.. only to do something different. Obviously as much as he liked Oregon it was only mere words because if would have truly liked Oregon as much as he said he did he would not be calling Florida. I am wondering this weekend who will say one thing.. but ultimately go somewhere else.

Let's not be too negative now. If we lose King, Mathis and Dargan, then I'll start getting down on our chances.

Losing a stud DT to his favorite program going up, who also happened to win 2 of the last 3 NCs isn't so bad. Grant was tough, but also understandable. TCU has been very good the past 2 years, has less competition at RB and is way close to home with a very good friend of his committing as well.

Keep in mind that Seastrunk, Owa, Werner, Heimuli, Lattimore are mid-to-long shots. They are some of the best players in the nation, so we got a lot of competition.

Of the remaining guys, here's my up-to-the-minute take on where I think they'll end up:

1. King: I like our chances best for him
2. Werner: very little out there but what I hear it sounds very good
3. Dargan: have to survive his trip to Ucla on the 15th which won't be easy, but having a teammate already on our roster and what his coach says, might be too tuff for Ricky to overcome
4. Mathis: not as bullish on him. Won't shock at all if he opts to stay in-state.
5. Thomas: I think we get him if there's room and his academics are in order. USC has 2 stud TEs already committed. Miami may be stiffest competition.
6. Heimuli: We have as good a shot as anyone, problem is we're battling a lot of big time schools for his sig.
7. Jefferson: we lead now, but I think we lose him to Bruins. He's buddies with Bruin Randall Carroll and he is a Socal kid.
8. Owa: like our chances better than some do, but still tuff to get him
9. Lattimore: not good news that his family isn't visiting, but good news that he didn't cancel altogther. Going to be tough to get him and doubt we will
10.. Seastrunk: he's got USC written all over him.
11. Hemschoot: hard to say if there will be room.

So here's my overly optimistic final list from among those 11:
King, Dargan, Mathis, Werner, Owa, Jefferson, Thomas, Hemschoot

Here's my realistic list: King, Dargan, Werner, Thomas, 2-3 sleepers

i hate to be debbie downer again but i have no idea why peeps think we get either of the 2 rb's. oh sure they "like" us but i've never thought they'd come here. parents not coming with lattimore doesn't change my mind. parents not coming on trips is overrated imo. never felt it for owa but who knows. not a clue on werner nor the heimulu. no on jefferson but who knows. do we really need more db's in this class? i guess so cause the coaches say so. no clue on thomas or hermschoot. dargan? meh. who knows. lol king yes.

I won't be very upset if we don't land Lattimore or Seastrunk. We have 2 VERY good RB's RIGHT NOW that will be with us for the next year or 2....hopefuly 3, and Dontae Williams comming in.

I'm more concerned with the DT posisition. Heimuli will more than likely go on his mission..so he won't be a "right now" impact for any team.

I'm wondering if the coaches will possibly look at Remington or Clanton to fill the DT void?
What about Hamani Stevens....is he back this year or next year? I know that they tried him out on the D line in the spring of 2008.....?????

The thing about the DT position is that people (myself included) have forgotten Andrew Iupati since he redshirted this past year. Many players have said to watch out for him since he started tearing it up on the scout team after recovering from nagging injuries that slowed his development.

Don't forget Denton Tuiasosopo, a 6'1" 305 lb transfer from Sacramento State who will switch to DT after sitting out this year. The D line may be a pleasant surprise next year

I think it will too. With all our younger (and older) guys having been with Coach Azz for the better part of a year now, I think we see marked improvement in our D-Line.

I believe Iupati's brother was an all american guard for the Idaho Vandels this year and was a mauler inside, 6-6 330lbs. Pretty sure he's a first or second round draft pick so hopefully if correct andrew could have a lot of upside.

If Andrews brother is Mike Iupati, move him to the OLine, have you seen what he does on the line? I really hope Seattle tags him with pick 14, the guy can play either guard spot and because he's such a run mauler, you could put him at RT even (with a rh qb).

huh? you are aware that just because one brother is good at one thing, it doesn't mean the other brother would be just as good? please tell me you realize that. purty please?
