Playing time
Living and dying by the 3 point line, I can live with. Not playing defense, but exploding on offense is bearable. Going winless in the pac-10? I'll survive...
But there's one thing that especially seems to bother me with Ernie Kent and that's his evaluation of talent and deciding who should see the court.
I don't think he's ever playing the right guys. And when he does play the right guys, he brings them out at the wrong time! It's frustrating to watch and it's increasingly got worse over time. I've never ever ever got why Ray Schafer rarely saw the court. Kent would say he just doesn't fit our system or he just isn't ready. But then all I hear about him is how great he plays in practice. I don't know about you guys, but I think he could have been a pretty damn good center for us.
Ray is just one of the examples of potential talent getting hindered by Ernie.
Then there's times where he doesn't know when to sit a player (See: TaJuan Porter).
And this year, it seems like he's playing the wrong guys all the time. Longmire should be getting more shots. Dunigan and Crittle can be dominant inside if they played more and got the ball more (Dunigan fouls out a lot, so I blame coaching for that). Wiley NEEDs to see the court more. Where is Teondre Williams and Matt Humphrey? If we are 6-13, why the hell aren't they playing more? There's not point to this season anymore, might as well let the future take over.
And it feels like a player or 2 is transferring every year because of Ernie... hmmm...
My 2 cents. What do you guys think?

Re: Playing time
Good observations TK. One thing that drives me crazy: the constant substitutions. A player will be on a roll, but Kent will take him out. A player will commit one foul or one turnorver and Kent seems to panic and take him out. No wonder there is never consistency with Kent's teams. They can never get into a rhythm because Kent goes crazy with his moves. Also, Dunigan hasn't been in foul trouble the last few games yet he only plays like 20 minutes? That's unacceptable. Porter and Brown often look bad out there yet there are no minutes for Odia or Voogd who is now gone?

Exactly! And every time he makes a change it seems like a momentum killer.duckgrad99 wrote:Good observations TK. One thing that drives me crazy: the constant substitutions. Re: Playing time
TK1, you summed up my exact feelings.
I can handle going winless & struggling with all the freshmen. It's the incompetency at coaching that makes it all so frustrating. There's times where you'd think EK was a rookie coach that had no idea what he was doing. The substitution patterns have been a problem for years and certain guys that seem to have a ton of potential never get a chance. I don't know why that is but I have heard from people who are close to the team that Ernie kinda has "his guys" & if you aren't one of 'em, have fun riding the bench. I don't know if that's true but it definitely doesn't seem unrealistic. Especially when there was guys like Schafer, who as a frosh would come in & pull off some insane moves, but never was consistently used.
Until we get a CONSISTENT COACH, we will never have COSISTENT SUCCESS. It will always be a big run every 4-5 years & Kent will continue to get extensions because of it. If we go 0-18, the AD needs to seriously consider finding a new coach.

Why do people keep saying a big run every 4 or 5 years and thats all he's done?...Will someone please show me some evidence of that?

Just use google. Look at the last decade. It's not hard to figure out where that comes frompudgejeff wrote:Why do people keep saying a big run every 4 or 5 years and thats all he's done?...Will someone please show me some evidence of that?

I think it should be the other way around. Provide us with some evidence that shows that isn't the trend under Erniepudgejeff wrote:Why do people keep saying a big run every 4 or 5 years and thats all he's done?...Will someone please show me some evidence of that?

Um I already have multiple times in previous threads...When I make statements I back them up with facts...I love that when I call you out on your unfounded statements all you guys can say is you show me...I didn't make the statement...I asked you for the proof to back up your statement...Maybe your not getting it cause it's not there.

Jeff, the proof is right there. FOr example, look at his first 4 and last 4 years at Oregon.

Re: Playing time
I have always been an Ernie Kent supporter as I think we dont have the right to complain about lack of talent because we are just like FB where we have no history and the basketball team also doesn't get the same support from the athletic department until literally today when they started building the new arena.
That said, I am starting to sway over to being 50/50 on wanting Kent gone.
This season is lost, we all know that, and so does Kent. Yet he continues to play strange rotations and tries to play guys that can get the win when right now wins dont matter all that much.
I think Dunigan and Crittle both came in way over hyped and people were thinking they'd come right in and be bruisers for us. I also think Kent wasn't ready to have an offense with these types of players playing for him. A team needs time to adjust to new players and so does a coaching staff.
With the season having no point outside of seeing our youth play major minutes we need to see Crittle/Dunnigan both get around 20 minutes a game while Wiley needs to see more than 15 minutes.
Crittle and Wiley have really improved over the course of the season. I was talking with a buddy today on how ya we aren't winning games but in my eyes I can see us getting better.
Kent's playing time given out confuses me and that'd be my biggiest complaint right now.

Re: Playing time
You can see some of the freshmen getting better while others have hit that wall that usually occurs about midway through a season. The guys definitely on the rise are Wiley and Crittle. Wiley has started showing his shooting touch. Crittle is starting to come on down low with rebounds. His defense is still suspect but that will come with time. I think the guys that have hit the wall are Dunigan and Sims. Dunigan is pretty much the same as the first half of the season. It seems like he tries to force things down low and gets a little lazy on the defensive end. Sims can't seem to find his shooting touch and has been trying to force passes where they shouldn't be going. That's very typical of freshmen PG since they have to learn that they can't get away with the same passes they did in HS. The two freshmen that haven't gotten on track all season are Williams and Humphrey. Williams has been injured for good parts of the season but has shown that he has great athleticism when he is in. Humphrey hasn't shown any of his shooting touch that he was supposed to have and makes a lot of bad passes. It's too bad that we couldn't have redshirted Williams or Humphrey because they seem like the type of players that could have used an extra year to prepare before seeing game time.

Re: Playing time
I'm not gonna say I want Kent gone...But Saturday really frustrated me...At the start of the second half TP had an assist a 3 and a runner all in the first 2 minutes of it and then EK pulls him for no reason whatsover...He then procedes to leave him on the bench for the next 6 min of which were unable to score through out it and we went from down 2 to down 18...I mean maybe he wasn't worried about the win and was trying to see if the other kids could over come it without TP...But it really did frustrate me...But as MOPS said you can see this team getting better...You can see that Wiley's getting better and he's getting minutes because of it...Dunnigan's learning to stay out of foul trouble...TP's is finally getting comfortable in his role and is playing much much better...They all seemed to be settling in...And you have to remember that's an Arizona team that's been playing great lately...I think we beat OS and at least one of the bay area schools when they come here and i say one of the Washington schools up there.

Hmm I wonder if Kent read my post. He let Wiley free Saturday and look what he did?
