Recruiting assessment of Altman
It's still very early, but how do you guys feel so far with the way Altman's recruited with such a limited amount of available prospects?
Jon Loyd was an exceptional pick up this late in the game. I really think he was one of the top 10 players left on the board. There's certainly no room to blame Altman for missing out on the Terrence's because he was hired far too late to be able to convince either of them to pick the Ducks. Nared adds depth, but not really an excitable pick up. He did miss out on Polee, who would have been a fantastic pick up. The rest of the names we are going after Munford, Cain, Moreland, Helsip, and a couple small others aren't IMO players who will ever do much at the UO.
So outside of Loyd, I doubt we get any player that'll have a big impact on this team. Naturally, this class won't be so hot because of the limitations. But is that really the case? Or is this a class that will become the norm for Oregon? Should we expect more average (or below average) recruiting classes like this in the future for Altman? (ie, is he going to have 5/4star classes that Kent would occaisonally have?)
That's my opinion, what's yours?

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
Like you said, it's way too early. We'll be able to evaluate his recruiting ability based on the next class he brings in. Loyd was definitely a solid pickup. Losing out on Polee to St. Johns was kind of embarrassing. Nared is ok, but probably nothing special. Kyle Cain would probably be an excellent pickup, seeing that the other programs that are recruiting him are very solid. The rest of the bunch doesn't excite me - I would rather preserve those scholarships for next year's class.

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
I didn't really expect any recruits in this class, so 2 is certainly better than nothing. I think that expecting to get top recruits this late(especially since Altman hasn't been here long) was unrealistic. I think winning solves all problems. If Altman's teams improve over the next few years, I don't see why we couldn't get some top recruits. Basically, I think we need to give Altman time and see what happens. I will say this though: the recruiting philosophy does need to be different than Creighton. A bunch of guys recruited to play at Creighton wouldn't be good enough to play at Oregon.

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
For coming in so late, then I say he's done fine so far. The players he's gotten this year are not the big-name recruits we wanted but they are probably good fits for Altman's system. As for his recruiting philosophy, I think it will change since he knew of the limitations that Creighton had. He knew most top-level recruits wouldn't go to Creighton since it's a small school in a mid-major conference. He recruited players that he knew he had a good chance at landing. Look at Loyd. Altman recruited him at Creighton and even though Loyd liked Altman, he wanted to play in a larger conference. As soon as Altman goes to Oregon, Loyd is very receptive. With Oregon's resources and the fact it plays in a major conference, Altman should be able to attract better talent as long as he wins.duckgrad99 wrote:I didn't really expect any recruits in this class, so 2 is certainly better than nothing. True, of all the prospects left on our board, Cain actually sounds like a solid player, afterall he is visiting Illinois right now. I just hope Altman has stronger classes in the future, I suppose only time will tell!uostudent wrote:Like you said, it's way too early. Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
I won't make any kind of judgment on his recruiting till he has a few good seasons. He's taking over a program that hasn't seen any success for awhile. Oregon isn't a big player on the recruiting scene right now. I expect him to pull in some underrated guys who end up being a lot better than their rating (Loyd for example), at least initially. Until we put together a few good season & tourney appearences, expecting anything more is unfair to Altman. Should he do better than he did at Creighton, obviously, but its not like he has players banging down his door now that hes at Oregon.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if he has success getting some bigger names starting next year. He seems like the kind of guy who can get recruits to come here even without a ton of success, a guy that players want to play for no matter the recent success, or lack there of, of the program.

Altman had one week before the first day for recruits to sign.
This class doesn't show his ability to recruit or lack there of at all. Way too small of a sample size.
Lets wait till the 2011 kids can start signing before we start talking if he can or cannot recruit.

Way too early to even think about this discussion.

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
If you read my first post, you'd know that I ultimately agree with the fact that this isn't enough to assess Altman's recruiting skills. I was just merely pointing out that I HOPE this isn't a sign of things to come. Nothing wrong with speculation.Lord_Vader wrote:How can you actually feel that way.UOducksTK1 wrote:True, of all the prospects left on our board, Cain actually sounds like a solid player, afterall he is visiting Illinois right now. I think 2011 & 2012 will show us the telling truth about Altman and his recruiting abilities.UOducksTK1 wrote:It's still very early, but how do you guys feel so far with the way Altman's recruited with such a limited amount of available prospects?

As far as this year, Loyd was the best PG available and a great get for Altman. Nared on the other hand..... seems odd to offer the guy, unless he knows someone will be transferring away....?

Nared can play inside or out, and has a reputation as a 3 point shooter. IMO, a guy that big who can consistently shoot the three ball could be a big bonus.

I would agree with you if he was coming in as a freshman........ and had a chance to develop.woundedknees wrote:Nared can play inside or out, and has a reputation as a 3 point shooter. IMO, a guy that big who can consistently shoot the three ball could be a big bonus.
If his rivals profile is correct? then I find it odd that an east coast JC kid doesn't have any other offers.

Can't say I'm excited about bringing in a JC who doesn't really look that promising, but I won't judge anything until we see how his teams play. That's when we find out how successful a recruiting season was.

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
How many minutes has Nared played for the ducks? none...
how many minutes has Boyd played for the ducks? none...
how many minutes on the sidelines during a game has Altman
coached for the ducks? none. but yet we can assume that
these kids can or cant play. that the coach can or cant recruit.
The true measure of Altman's recruiting wont come until the team
is made up of all of his recruits. I'm sure he knows he's stepped up
to a better conference where the expectations are higher. the need
to recruit better players then he had at Creighton. He has only been
here a short time. And to actually get players to visit this late in the
recruiting process is amazing.
But until he proves he cant coach or recruit lets give him a chance.
look what he has to work with? the team isnt without talent. it's just
not deep with talent. I'm sure the pressure to win and win pretty soon
will be on him. The university has set the bar high. they want the basketball team to be just like the football team. With that comes that
pressure. I'm sure he will work as hard as he can and give his all to
get the talent in here. Lets give him that chance.......Go Ducks!!!!

Re: Recruiting assessment of Altman
He has already brought one high profile local talent to the school in his first month. I'm not worried, I think we will get pretty much all of the top local talent. Would EK have gotten half of them? Who knows? But I can say I'm comfortable with the decision we made, and I think he will do a GREAT job.
