Perspective on the JC recruiting "problems"?
It is completely possible that the number of JC guys that don't make it to Oregon COULD possibly be an issue of compliance with NCAA standards on graduation etc...Am I totally off base here?
I would totally give up potential JC guys that screw up our scholarship limit in the future even if they were 5 star guys...
just a thought

I think think giving up on JC players completely is a little drastic and will never happen, but I do think the staff and the admissions guys need to work together better to find what guys are going to be able to get in from the JC ranks. I also think a lot of this JC admission stuff has to do with internet classes that dont transfer over, Im not 100% on that, but I believe thats the case.

Arguably are 2 most important players this year were Masoli and Blount and you want to give those type of guys up?

I'm not saying give up on all JC guys...but if the administration (or coaches) thinks there will be a scholarship problem in the future because of admission of certain guys then yes, give those recruits up....

I would like to know why all of the sudden we seem to have much higher standards for our JC transfers than the rest of the country. We shouldn't lose out on a JC guy only to see him commit to another D1 team and certainly not to another team in our own conference.

What does it gain the Pac-10 (or Oregon) to say that we have tougher standards 1 year ahead of the other schools?
Posing my question another way: Are a couple of really good recruits with sketchy transcripts or study habits worth 8 (Wash State penalty this year) scholarships?

I don't think we'll have this problem next year since the HS class is so loaded next year. Plus, we probably won't need to find stop-gap players in the JC ranks since Oregon has covered their bases in key positions in the last couple of classes.

Re: Perspective on the JC recruiting "problems"?
Face it... Getting the jump on the rest of the NCAA cost the U of O at least 3-5 potentially great athletes... On something that will have been addressed properly by next season's recruits simply because they would have had ample time to get the correct classes without going on-line. It was a stupid move by the Dept. of Higher Education.
LeGarrette Blount is a prime example of the kind of athlete who wants to take advantage of the education side of being a college athlete. Not the greatest student, but he is making due diligence to make the opportunity pay off... At Oregon.
Several other young men will never get that opportunity, and Duck fans will never get to see if those same young men had the intestinal fortitude to prove they were deserving of that opportunity.
Thanks for the forward thinking!

We also most likely won't go the JC route next year since we'll have limited scholarships available next yeargreenyellow wrote:I don't think we'll have this problem next year since the HS class is so loaded next year. Re: Perspective on the JC recruiting "problems"?
It happens every single year so get use to it. This is definitely not something unique to this year, it's just the coaches are trying to catch it sooner so they can feel the spot with a player who will qualify. I've been following recruiting for the last 10 years I've gotten to the point that I'm happy when we only lose 1-2 kids as non-qual. Go back through our last 5 classes and you can see all the players that don't make it in.

Re: Perspective on the JC recruiting "problems"?
I do not post on every link that is covered here but I felt would on this one. I agree with chapelhill on this. I am not at all advocating abandoning ship on the JC transfers per se.. but I would hope that maybe in future if we going to heavily pursue a JC person we check with admissions and make sure guy will qualify.. if it looks iffy or 50/50 then we should spend the time and effort going after a high school person. We lost a lot of JC talent this year. I agree if they have the grades they deserve a shot. Masoli.. Blount... and several others have worked out for the ducks. If anything this year serves as a reminder to the coaches we need to make a more of an effort making sure they will pass admissions before going after them and I expect the coaches will do just that in the future.

The point I was making is that it appears a couple guys who failed to qualify due to the adjusted stadnadrs, would have before the "adjustment".

Re: Perspective on the JC recruiting "problems"?
I hear Masoli's name bandied about in a lot of these JUCO threads.buckmarkduck wrote:Arguably are 2 most important players this year were Masoli and Blount and you want to give those type of guys up?
Masoli was a full qualifier out of HS. He could have come and enrolled at UO any time he (and the coaches) wanted. "Traditional" JUCO guys have to get an acceptable AA degree to transfer to Oregon because they don't have the GPA, SAT, ACT, etc. scores to be admitted out of HS.
Just trying to correct what seems to be a common misconception regarding Masoli. He's a guy that waited until his soph year to come to Oregon. Not a JC guy. At least not in the traditional sense.
