Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
I don't think Ernie is fired, even if he goes 0-fer in conference. I have never been on either Ernie bandwagon, the love him or the leave him, but when looking at the whole of his coaching career here, he has been extremely successful, by any honest evaluation.
2 seasons ago the Ducks were 29-8, winning 29 games for just the third time in school history and advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight for the second time this decade.
Oregon is one of only 15 schools nationally to advance to two NCAA Regional Finals this decade (Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, UCLA). That's pretty good company.
Ducks won the Pacific-10 Conference Tournament twice under Kent, and Oregon is the only school in the league to have won that event twice since it was reinstated in 2002.
Kent is now the all-time winningest coach in Pac-10 tournament play, posting a 76.9 winning percentage (10-3), ahead of Arizona’s Lute Olson at 72.7 percent (16-6).
Kent has produced three NBA first round draft choices and four All-Americans.
He is the only man to have led Oregon to four NCAA tournament appearances in school history.
I think he is likely here through the end of his contract, and I feel that he has probably earned it.

A few things:
1. I don't think that a 3 game pac-10 tournament is a good indicator of a good/bad coach. I prefer to look at the regular season.
2. Any coach could have produced the NBA players that Oregon produced. The elite 8's shouldn't have been a surprise with the players we had.
3. Oregon has a losing record in conference play under Kent.
4. A few good seasons doesn't mean that it's ok to "tank" in the other seasons. It's unacceptable to be 0-11 in conference regardless of youth or talent.

Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
NO WAY WHEN WE GO 0-FER HE KEEPS HIS JOB! It's that simple, the blame has to fall somewhere and the coach takes the fall. As he should. Is our team really young? YES. Who's fault is that? Who recruits every year?
I just watched the second game this year. I watched the Alabama game game in the Hawaii tourney and against Arizona on Saturday.
They are not improving, Dunnigan can't stay on the court, he's lazy and gets cheap fouls. WE commit WAY to many turnovers, stupid ones like the pass in the backcourt thrown out of bounds by Sim with two duck players standing right by it.
It's embarassing to watch, and to know that we are winless in Pac10 play and it's February.
If I am dumping truckloads of money into a new arena, this is not what I expect to happen.
Thanks for all that you've done Ernie, you've enjoyed great success, it's time to part ways. IMO.

You said it well. Kent has done a good job. But its time for a change.jhopduck wrote:NO WAY WHEN WE GO 0-FER HE KEEPS HIS JOB! It's that simple, the blame has to fall somewhere and the coach takes the fall. As he should. Is our team really young? YES. Who's fault is that? Who recruits every year?

Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
Judging by all the articles I have been reading in the registerguard, Daily Emerald, Oregonian, etc, Kent is the greatest coach and could do no wrong at Oregon. Everyday I read something new on this, basically telling the fans that we should be patient and that this is just one down year. Kent gets more love from the local sportswriters than Belloti, it's really pathetic.

Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
I know Basketball is not football, but if the football team went 0-12 we would want change there. So why not fire kent if the team goes 0-18? I have been a fan of kent for a very long time, but when the way the team looks now, he needs to go!! We had a tough non-conferece schedule and have played N.C. and other top 10 teams better then we have played vs the pac-10, why is that? The team looks like they have gotten worse through the season and that cant happen!!!
But if we go 1-17, no way they fire kent.....but they should

Seems like the team has given up and EK has a mind set of we cant win and wont win. This is why the line up is so erratic looking to blame youth. He needs to look in the mirror and blame himself there are plenty of teams out there with freshmen running the show and doing it well. Another thing is that EK always has to have a whipping post last your it was Brown and this year its Porter to try to prove a point or make an example of just because he feels its necessary. He needs a For sale sign in his lawn ASAP

No, I don't think he will get fired. I think he should get fired though.
I don't think it is fair to call EK a great recruiter either. Yes, he can land some top recruits but "great recruiters" still land the guys that they need. A great recruiter wouldn't end up in the situation we are in this year. There is no excuse to force yourself into this situation.

Honestly, what has he done so great in recruiting in the last 4-5 years?karlhungis wrote:No, I don't think he will get fired. I think he should get fired though.

We only have 1 4 star on our team right now (using scout). The rest are 2s and 3s. And for next years incoming class, we have two 3 stars coming in.
Where's the great recruiting? The beavers are getting better players than us now..

I agree. Other than Dunigan, Kent hasn't gotten any great recruits since the 2004 season. What he has done is get recruits here from across the country, but that hasn't worked out as well as we all wanted it to. Also, if you look at Brooks, Jackson, Ridnour and Jones, they were all from the west coast. We should be able to get some top players from California, and we aren't doing that.

Unless some miracle happens, Kent is going to be back next season. Just read the recent Q & A with Kilkenny. Must be nice to be winless in the pac-10 and not have to worry about your job.

Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
Yeah...none of those teams went 0-18 in conference either. You do realize that with the loss to Washington that this is the worst basketball team since 1956, right?pudgejeff wrote:Right we should go back to the 2* and 3* star recruits that we're supposedly coached up so well and never went to NCAA tournaments and never were even in the conversation for pac-10 titles...good call that'll fill the arena...Gotta love the logic...well I mean lack there of
Even those teams with DIV II quality players managed not to lose 13 conference games in a row. That is quite an accomplisment. You almost have to try to do that with the players we have.
Not really worried about it. Based on what I read in the QA with PK today, EK is toast. The fact that he waivered that much in the middle of the season is telling. PK knows that Oregon MUST be competitive next season and probably make the tourney to sell out that arena the following season. The economy is bad, and this is simple economics for a good business man.

Re: Will Kent be fired after this season?
I feel like Kent will get "one more shot" next year to prove himself, much like Bev Smith did this year. And if we get Jamil Wilson, I would think it would be an almost guarantee that this happens. I really hope I'm wrong. I think we need to part ways with Kent, not to mention the other coaches. Which brings up some more thoughts. How much of an impact do assistant coaches have in basketball? Is it even in the realm of the impact assistants have in football?

Well we surpassed the 0-1 win mark in the pac-10 with a whopping 2 wins.
