He definitely won the title & went to the Elite 8 with someone else's players. And after that, he never got back to the previously high level. He really hasn't had that much more success than Kent. Obviously more tourney appearances & wins but that comes with being at Kentucky compared to Oregon. Ultimately though, he has 2 Elite 8's just like Kent.

swagnatic101 makes some good points & I'm not so sure I'm as high on Smith as I was. I still think it would be an upgrade from Kent but I think we can do better.

You post the above and then make that comment??? 10 Straight years in the big dance and a National Championship???

Do you really like EK that much?
Did you read my whole post?

Ultimately you are measured by your tourney success. Like I said, after the first two years & with his own players, he never went farther than Kent in the tourney. Obviously, like I said again, he had muore tourny appearnces & wins but that comes with being at Kentucky. If Kent was getting that kind of support & had "Kentucky" next to his name he could get into a kids living room & get much, much better talent. Just like Tubby did.

My point was, Tubby with is own players has reached 2 Elite 8's......just like Kent.

How many 2 win seasons has Tubby had, with his own players?

Obviously Tubby is a much better coach & I would take him over Kent any day & every day. Go back & read my other posts in this thread, all I was trying to say is Tubby isn't the best guy out there. We can get a better guy with better years ahead of him. That was my only point.

What's the point of a new coach if all the key players leave too? Do you guys really think EK deserves to be fired after the team he had this year, I mean he has taken Oregon to two elite 8's recently. This team could be special with Dunigan, Humphrey, Crittle and Wilson in 2-3 years and it seems like there is no patience now where there should be. Oregon is not a top 3 program in the Pac 10 as far as I am concerned, UCLA, Arizona, Washington are. I don't understand why after 1 bad year now he deserves to get fired, which will cause at least Jamil Wilson to go somewhere else.

Because it's not just 1 bad year. The team has had several seasons where they have underachieved under Kent.

If some players leave (or don't come) so be it. You can't be afraid to move on because of the possible fallout. In the end, there is actually no way to know who may bolt. Have we considered that some players may quietly welcome the change?

No one or two players make the program or are more important than it. I'm willing to let a couple unproven players leave if it keeps his program from falling deeper into mediocrety & brings in a coach who will revitalize it & take it new heights.

I don't know how Washington got included in that group, but let's not give them more credit than they deserve. Keep in mind, they failed to make the NCAA tournament two years in a row just prior to this year. Similar to the situation at Oregon, many Washington fans wanted Romar to be replaced since they felt his teams the past couple of years greatly underachieved. Romar returns this season, wins Pac-10 coach of the year and suddenly people on message boards and radio talk shows think he is a great coach again. It is funny how these coaches alternate between dumb and smart seemingly overnight according to the "experts" watching from the stands and from their living rooms. :)

This isn't an identical situation, but I would say that we lost some football recruits because of the coaching changes. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I'm happy to have Kelly as the head coach. I'm sure we won't miss a beat in recruiting, especially if the football team has a good season. I'm hoping that the same would happen with a new basketball coach.

duckgrad99 wrote:Few may very well be a lateral move, and I'm certainly no expert as to who would be a good hire and who wouldn't if Kent wasn't brought back. Also, even though I'm one of the "fire Kent people", I certainly understand those that want to keep him. At the same time, I think expectations need to be raised, especially with the new arena on the way. Kent was already on the hot seat a few years ago, and I don't think going 18-14 and then 8-23 or whatever it was is good enough, especially with all of the talent we have had. Personally, I would rather go to the tourny every year then go 1 out of every 4 or 5 years going to the elite 8. I just want the basketball program held to the same standards as the football program. If the football team went 6-6 and then 2-10, changes would be guaranteed. I don't think people would be happy with a BCS game one season and then no bowl game for the next 3 seasons. To me, a sign of a good coach is consistency. So while Kent has definitely gotten Oregon basketball going, I think there is a lot of room for improvement. While I don't know who the next coach should be, I want someone that doesn't make excuses, makes adjustments, can teach defense and can be on the same page with his players and get them to play hard for 40 minutes.

^5, +1 and Nominated! Oops, wrong board. You hit one out of the park with this post. Totally agree.

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread just kinda jumped into the middle of it. Anyway you slice it, Tubby is waaaaay better than EK.

I've seen and played for H.S. coaches who were better at X's & O's than ol Ern. He simply couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Great recruiter and a great Duck, but sometimes rather than putting lipstick on a pig, one might opt for finding a gal who didn't need lipstick to begin with.

My older brother is much better at coaching bigs, and making in-game adjustments than EK (He has coached HS, assisted at a small college, and was an HC at the semi-pro level), but I wouldn't want him for the Oregon coach HC... I think the Ducks can do much better.
