I know it's exciting, but I would take 100 of those kids that are sitting by the fax machine on letter of intent day desperate to gets theirs sent in first. Those are the kids I want!!! Prima donas can go elsewhere as far as I'm concerned because I love to watch the kids that are all about the team & not themselves.
Bingo! We have a winner!

Sorry, but if you have a whole team of those guys you will be lucky to be 6-6. It sounds nice to say those things, but if you don't have horses, you are done.

So how do you account for our success in the past decade?

I would argue that Oregon and, God help me that I'm saying this, Oregon State develop 3* talent better than anyone in the Pac-10. I get excited to have the kids that are desperate to come to Oregon like Ethan Grant, Curtis White, and Mitchell.

Our success is because we recruited players who had choices, and came to Oregon. The original post implied that we should only take kids that are begging to be Ducks. That is just not realistic. Talented kids have choices (see Dennis Dixon, Jonathon Stewart, Jaison Williams, etc, etc), and have to be sold on the benefits of any program (OK, with the exception of SC). A guy waiting at the fax machine to be first is probably not a premier prospect. Some of those kids will grow into premier players, but the odds are lower than with guys with more choices. I just get tired of the implication that we should not recruit premier talent just because we lose more than we get. Guess what- everybody does (again, see the SC and Florida exceptions).

You can still filter out for attitude, character, etc. Not every premier talent is a head case.

Curtis White is 4/5 star talent who is being pursued by UCLA among others. I promise you the staff is doing everything possible to keep his commitment solid. They will not assume he is waiting by the fax machine to fax his letter. Ethan Grant took his visits and had to be resold on coming to Oregon, which shows me he is at least smart enough to realize he has options. They are good kids who need to look out for their own interests. Fortunately, they feel their interest will be served at Oregon.

I didn't say that the kids don't have talent. I'm talking about the prima donas that think the world evolve around them. If you re-read my original post, I want the kids that are excited to come here not that those kids don't have talent. You assume because a kid is standing by the fax machine that he doesn't have talent. That's not what I meant.

We have many players with lots of talent but what separates them from the prima donas is their attachment to the concept of TEAM. Those are the kids I want and that's the point I was making.

I like the kids that don't waffle at the last minute and drag everything out. I understand their age & those whispering in their ears in order to add excitement, but if I have to choose between 2 kids who are both 4* and one does the national TV look at me thing and the other is standing by the fax machine excited to play at Oregon, guess which one I want?

I also think it's perfect PR for Oregon to get into the national conversation with the prima donas. I know how the game is played and we must be part of that discussion, however, my heart goes with the kids who give 110% even before they step onto the field at Autzen.

Funny argument gang but one could argue that not only do you want/need talent (doesn't necessarily matter the star level 2/3/4/5 stars...to a degree:) ) but its the coaching and talent evaluation is the difference here. OSU among others do an outstanding job with the talent they have and the USCs of the world that are the ones who are actually failing here because they should never lose (based on the talent/star quality)...right? But that not the case it takes coaching, talent evaluation, scheme and heart/desire that's the difference.

BTW aren't we a little off track with this thread? haha

Just as a reminder, Jonathon Stewart picked up a hat on TV. Glad it was ours.

We've had several do that (Cameron Colvin too), but it's those that are playing up the hype that tend to shy me off.
