What they choose to do with the opportunity for a free education is on them. Many college students go into life altering debt to get the education the athletes get for free. If anything, the universities should be putting an emphasis on this and encouraging them to finish out their education.
Why on earth would you think there should be a cap? Unless we are talking about billions of dollars what does them making more hurt anything? I don’t understand thought processes like this at all.
It's OK my guy, calm down and take a deep breath. I didn't really finish that thought before, so I'll clarify. Freshmen should have a cap when first coming in; in fact, freshmen shouldn't be allowed to sign NIL deals at all. Kind of a "prove it" type thing. That said, I'm speaking as a fan, I don't blame these kids one bit for taking a deal if it's offered to them. Also, I don't understand the thought process of saying these kids aren't getting anything out of it, but the universities are profiting off them. Like I said before, they are getting something. A free education that puts most students into years and years of debt. If they choose not to take advantage of a free education then that's on them. Giving them an offer in the millions when they haven't even graduated high school is absurd. Not only is it absurd, but it now opens the door for bidding wars on these kids.
Again, why should there be a cap? If somehwere/someone is willing to pay them then they have "proved it". I agree wholeheartedly that people are extremely ignorant when they the kids aren't getting anything out of it, and also that it's absurd universites/boosters would be willing to pay this for the players.
If there is no cap, then which school would care striking out on an $8mln hs recruit? If the school has multi billionaire boosters or if sports were included in endowment missions, they could strike out on as many multi-million dollar hs recruits as they wanted and still keep lining them up.
Its not really "absurd" for a multi-billionaire booster, who is a passionate college football fan, to dropped 8mln on an unproven HS recruit. It'd be like a normal person making a couple hundred dollar purchase, with a creative accounting team to reduce that amount even further.

Why are there individuals that are so adamant that these kids shouldn't get paid when people want to pay them for their NIL?

I see a repeat of what happens with the NFL only worse. Kids with less wisdom and more money are going to end up at the bad end of the stick. Too much money too soon ends up Killing, damaging, and putting people in prison. Just look at the results in the pro leagues even with the controls the teams try and build in. Do the kids deserve the money, probably, without controls will it end up damaging a lot of them? Highly likely.

This is highly presumptuous and doesn't really address the issue in a tangible way.

Using an example that exists is not presumptive. The amounts of 0's may be different but all you have to do is read the sports page or the obits to see what happens. This is the equivalent of handing a high-powered racing car to someone who just got their permit. Money is dangerous and having more of it than your peers and those around you opens the dangerous box. I don't want to keep the students poor and at the mercy of the schools but neither do I want them hurt, in jail, or dead because they don't understand the dangers of what they were handed. If pro athletes are not enough look at what happens to most lotto winners and how often they end up broke, hurt, or have others plotting to get their money.
