DING! DING! DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!

Why is it so hard for people to realize that the level of education at Cal is far superior the one you get at UO? We can't compete with Cal and Stanford if academics are important to a recruit.

the sad thing is that academics don't matter in the real world, unless you go to an Ivy League school or Stanford.
Its all about who you know.

Actually above all else it's Cal's d-line coach that is the biggest draw for Gabe. I've talked to Gabe about it and he said that that coach is a really cool guy and he's really developed a bond with him.

Not saying academics play no factor for him, but the biggest pro for Cal is the coach.

You are correct sir, generally speaking. If his future major involves something that Cal is noted for, I'm all for his choice. However, I have to say that 99.99999999% of football recruits struggle when they get to any college. Cal, Oregon, Boise State - any college degree has value. Just because Cal is thought of as a better "school" than most others in the Pac 10 does not mean that the recruit is going to get a better job (non football) after graduation. In fact, If I was a recruit, I would be looking for an easier degree. A degree is a degree to most people.

Also, all this talk about Cal being a better school is very misleading. I went to Oregon to get a music education degree. Cal and Stanford have horrible music departments. ASU has the best music school in the Pac 10, and they are generally considered one of the weaker academic institutions overall. I think it is safe to say that not 1 recruit in this nation is smart enough to go to any school, no matter how "weak", and not learn a hell of a lot.

I think a lot of mommas need to realize that their little angel is not going to benefit greatly by picking one school over another for general education.

Maybe for some majors it makes a difference, but in the business world..its all about #1) who you know and #2) experience..where you went to school is an afterthought.

The guy is right.... you don't go to Harvard because their Econ 101 course is so much better than Oregon's, you go there to make connections. Unless you have a degree from an Ivy league or Stanford, companies want to see experience and what intangibles you bring to the table.

I stand by my original comment, it is an ignorant statement. Further, telling me that he is right because "you go there to make connections" is presumptuous and just as ignorant as what he said.

echo 1..Where are you getting your information. We are considered a " Premier" university.

There are just 64 colleges and universities in the American Association of Universities. 32 are public. UO is a FOUNDING member. The other west coast schools are Cal, UW, Stanford and usc. In the east our colleagues are Yale, Harvard, Penn and in the midwest Michigan and tOSU.

These are just a few of UO brags about our schools and departments that come to mind without any research:

UO School of Education #1 Public Institution and #3 all universities + #1 in special ed
UO School of Architecture # 1 for Sustainable Design and 7 all universities
Warsaw Sports Marketing School #1 and the first.

What are the UC and Cal State doing...shrinking and reducing departments and classes. What is UO doing...growing to 24,000 and building new academic living centers ( 2,500 beds ), opening an athletic academic learning center, planning for a $100M+ school of architecture and allied arts building. In the last year UO open a new School of Education Building and Music Building. his year we will open the new Alumni Center. All of these will enhance our already strong academics.

While Cal is struggling with no plan for the current financial problems in Cali, UO has proposed a new paradigm for financing and you will learn more about that plan this year.

Don't apologies. We are among the finest universities in the world!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Berkeley
The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked UC Berkeley 3rd internationally, while Newsweek and Webometrics placed Berkeley 5th in the World. Washington Monthly ranked Berkeley 1st in its 2009 National University College rankings. According to the National Research Council, 35 of 36 of the university's graduate programs rank in the top 10 in their respective fields, earning Berkeley the NRC's top score in academic reputation. In the US News and World Report graduate school survey, Berkeley is the only university to achieve top 5 rankings in all of the Ph.D. disciplines covered.

Great arguments and some very interesting data. Really sports marketing should be huge for football players.

Just hope you didn't graduate from the Journalism school  ;)

Yes, but the perspective to most people is that Berkley is one of the top schools on the west even though Oregon is pretty close academically.
