Yeah the response to that is 'Nike'. In other words, we've always had NIL from the outsiders perspective (at least within the last 30ish years).pezsez1 wrote: Thu Dec 05, 2024 12:30 pm I always point out that Oregon literally played for two national titles during the decade before NIL was a thing. And while we didn't have this amazing of recruiting classes we were pretty consistently in the top 10-15 range for a bit -- and part of that was with Chip who hated recruiting and was notoriously stingy with offers.
NIL is certainly a factor and even an advantage for us, but it isn't why we're winning and recruiting well. That stuff isn't new to us. It was here before and it will be here going forward. This is the result of an operation that's in synch from top to bottom with the right people in the right places. It's also a shining example of why I wish Jody would sell the Blazers already.

Seems apt for this conversation.
Also, it seems pretty clear that all those years of USC and husky fans claiming Oregon was paying recruits was pretty inaccurate when, now that you can pay players, our recruiting has gone to new heights. I guess it's the Vladimir Putin thing - every accusation is an admission.

I remember one of my buddies, who went to USC during the Pete Carroll era and live around the apartments where many of the USC football players lived, said he'd see all their football players driving around in new escalades.StevensTechU wrote: Thu Dec 05, 2024 1:06 pmSeems apt for this conversation.

^^ Someone did a slideshow of Alabama players and their cars about 5-7 years ago and it was absolutely ridiculous. Meanwhile at Oregon, you had Jeremiah Masoli trying to steal laptops and Cliff Harris robbing weed dealers. John Bacon was the only football player I knew with a nice ride, and that's because his parents were loaded.

I remember Cam Colvin driving around a pretty nice car (believe it was a Mercedes or BMW) as well. Always heard a bunch of rumors how he had it.StevensTechU wrote: Thu Dec 05, 2024 9:40 pm ^^ Someone did a slideshow of Alabama players and their cars about 5-7 years ago and it was absolutely ridiculous. The Mercedes CLK 420! I remember a few people thinking it was my car because of how I often I drove it, lol.greenyellow wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 3:02 amI remember Cam Colvin driving around a pretty nice car (believe it was a Mercedes or BMW) as well. He actually got investigated twice by the NCAA: once for that car and another time because he was recruited to USC during La Affair De Reggie Bush! He and other family were left with a bit of insurance money after his parents died.
It was not an uncommon thing for players to go take out student loans to buy cars, clothes among other things though at that time and I'm sure some still do.
