Well, I found out in this thread that guys I have been trading posts with for almost 20 years have moved out of state, and others are having kids. This is an Oregon site and we are talking about Oregon, so yeah, I think it's a good thread.

I agree this was/is a great post! I learned a lot about other members here, not only their political views but some history about them, age group, family, location and how they got there. But most importantly I saw a very delicate thread develop and grow in a very civil manner. So many groups and some threads here have instantly brought mocking and insults by others. I think it is a rare quality this group of Duck fans have, something to be proud of in these days. GO DUCKS!

I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying re: the crucifixion, that just wasn’t the point I was making. My point is simply that outward, culturally approved moral behavior isn’t necessarily an indicator of genuine Christlikeness. No one was more dedicated to God’s law than the Pharisees yet they not only missed God when he was standing right in front of them, but helped engineer his execution. What I see in the right-leaning evangelicals I know is a fixation on moral behavior, which causes their withdrawal, but neglects the gentle, lowly, self-giving, love of neighbor at the heart of Christ’s teachings and life.

His Kingdom didn’t come from this world but it is undoubtedly for this world—demonstrated both by His incarnation as well as His sending of us into it. And in the “already/not yet” state of the kingdom, we are absolutely strangers/aliens/exiles in Babylon until He comes and finally restores all things. Either way, we can support our perspectives via proof-text all day long but NT Wright or Mackie can explain the theology far better than I ever will in this format. To me, the overall biblical narrative is pretty clear.

As far as anecdotes go, I can provide a handful of examples of every outcome. I personally know home schoolers who are now addicts, public schoolers who are thriving, and vice versa for both. I’m not convinced that withdrawal leads to better outcomes. Longitudinal studies (Christian Smith NSYR, Bengtson LSOG) found that neither public nor private/homeschool shows a uniform effect after you account for warm, practiced faith in the home and church formation.

That’s really cool you knew Mackie. Thanks for sharing that.
The Pharisees of the Gospels where not righteous and they were not dedicated to God's law, only keeping the appearance of it in order to preserve their positions in leadership among the Jews. Yeshua said of them that they 'were of their father, the Devil'. The right-leaning evangelicals I know are builders of families, of churches and schools, supporters of missions, and probably the chief crowdfunders of the original Bible Project among numerous other projects designed to reach the lost. They are, after all, Evangelicals. It's in the name. The comparison to Pharisees is actually pretty outrageous, a quite literal exercise in demonization. I saw similar rhetoric coming from the school Tim and I attended just before it was shuttered last year. It was a going concern for over 80 years, built by stodgy old conservatives, providing formal Bible training to generations of students, and then it literally went woke and went broke. I don't see any virtue in tearing down the brethren in this fashion, only destruction of the backbone of the church.

It's funny, my background is in a doctrinal viewpoint that has often been accused of throwing out the Old Testament. It feels like now we are seeing a new movement that throws out the Epistles. Moral behavior is a rather common topic in Paul's letters, many of which seemed to be written to combat either immorality or bad doctrine creeping into the Church. It's fine to say that a focus purely on morality without humility or loving one's neighbor falls into the 'sounding gong' category, Paul said as much himself. What seems not fine to me is throwing the brethren under the bus in order to appear more acceptable to the world, a world that John says is passing away.

Anyway, in terms of the topic, I don't have an issue with people moving if they feel like the influences around them are more than their spirit can take. It's the reason DeAnthony Thomas came to Oregon from L.A. and now that Oregon is becoming more like L.A. I am not surprised to see people leaving. If someone feels called to stay and develop a 'kingdom outpost', that's great. We haven't left yet, although I don't live in Portland. If an angel comes and pushes me out the door like Lot, I will go, but I still like the area and a lot of the things Pez likes, minus the political tilt.
I’m not calling evangelicals Pharisees, nor claiming the Pharisees were truly righteous. I completely agree that they appeared righteous—zealous for Torah—and Geez’ warning stands for every movement: the drift toward boundary-keeping over justice, mercy, and faithfulness misses the mark.

As I said previously, I’m speaking about a pattern I’ve seen among people I personally know who are withdrawing, not condemning evangelicals as a whole. They tend to be focused on outward, performative “righteousness” yet largely absent of love and concern for their neighbor.

I’m simply advocating a presence-with-discernment posture—Christlike love in public—rather than reactionary retreat. Living the way Geez lived—amongst the most needy, not withdrawing from them (which many evangelicals do incredibly well!)

On outcomes for kids, the strongest predictors are a warm, practiced faith in the home and a deep connection to an intergenerational church. Schooling/geography show mixed effects once those are in place. I think we want the same end, we’re just looking at it from slightly different perspectives. And to be honest, it sounds like your circle/community is a lot healthier & Christlike than mine was (I’ve since found a new church community).

That's awesome and I'd encourage it. But two issues:

1- This is the wrong category, and members have been chastised and their posts deleted for doing the same thing.
2- The double-standard that I've tried to highlight is alarming. Members have had political, religious, and other posts deleted for being "inappropriate," and this thread has made it beyond clear that the standard is simply "no politics unless they're the politics I like." The admins have failed miserably in creating a forum where differing views are given equal merit.

Indeed. None of this has to do with Duck football. It belongs elsewhere if anywhere. I agree that posters have been civil, but religion and politics on a supposed football thread are bs. Please put this thread elsewhere and let us get back to talking football.

I mentioned the nearly 20 years I have been posting here or the earlier iteration of this site. In all of that time, there have always been discussions about various topics including politics and religion. Some get moved to other forums and that's fine if it makes people feel better. I've always thought it was funny that people advocate for deletion of posts because their post got deleted before. You didn't like it then, but now it's important to you that it happens to others. Shutting down discussion is rarely a good idea, particularly if that discussion is civil and not interrupting an existing conversation. People need to grow up and click on another thread.

Yeah I don't like shutting down discussions (And StevensTechU accusations of me deleting posts is false, unless it is spambots), but if we are going to discuss doctrine/theology, which I love, let's keep it in the other boards.

Never called you out by name. Posters don't get a receipt saying "This admin deleted your post," just get the wonderful experience of finding that someone went CCP on a post they didn't like. So not a shot at anyone directly, unless they've earned it.

“no politics unless they're the politics I like."

Amazing what a little power does to one’s convictions (looking at you, mods). Where’d that “Free LmJ” thread end up? Be decent and put this where it belongs.

Also, it wouldn’t take an act of God, as someone claimed, to give the country folk some say in Salem again; it would take republicans joining in the efforts to pass federal legislation to ban gerrymandering and/or the Supreme Court to not play possum (Rucho v Common Cause, 2019).

This country would be so much better off (and far less tribal/polarized) if we put redistricting in the hands of analytics & AI and placed term limits on SCOTUS appointments.

I don't understand the criticisms of having bias of one thread over another....? Everyone has the ability to comment on any thread, whether you disagree with the sentiments in the opening post or not....which is exactly what happened in this thread.

Post-deleting is not good, but I've had posts removed before so this idea that one side is favored over another is silly.

The only thing that I have to say about this thread, is that's I'm a happy Atheist.
